CommodusXIII
I've mentioned this before, but I can't remember where.. I would really love to see a multi-table Apocalypse-style battle. Say, three 8x4 or 8x6 tables with ~5,000 points per table. The table in the middle is the front line - massed infantry, tanks, MCs, etc. The other two tables are the "backfield" tables. Artillery, Titans, etc. You can only deploy on either the middle table or your own backfield table. You can transition between them with Zooming Flyers, Swooping FMCs, Deep Strike, Outgoing Reserves, etc. to move your reserves to the front line or launch strikes against your opponent's backfield. To add to the confusion of war, all three tables can be different opponents with independent games. So you're duking it out on the front lines between huge blobs of soldiers and vehicles, when someone calls out an artillery strike. Stop everything, resolve the scatters and wounds, and go back to it. Or you're on the backfield with a Titan taking shots at an enemy Titan when drop pods start raining down around you. A man can dream, right? Canadian_F_H
I was just reading the old third edition chapter approved book. It takes about a mega battle played out on the floor over an area dozens of feet by dozens of feet... The points were astro nomical... They even had special rules for move 4 times max speed with forced matching and roads for vehicles so long as no enemy models any where within 24 inches of the model anywhere along its path of travel... Can you imagine how happy ig artillery players where actually finding out there where targets out of range of their basilisk's? That's the kind of game you bring titans to! And I would gladly build and bring a 5k point crusade to match along side! CommodusXIII
That's the world I one day want to live in... http://i.imgur.com/T7AUE7al.jpg The left leg has returned safe and sound! I wasted no time in catching up on detailing. I'm finally done riveting... http://i.imgur.com/gPSIdRDl.jpg Purity seals and a Collegia Titanicus devotional placard were taken from Canis Venator. I'm taking no chances on a second structural collapse. Tomorrow is supposed to be a one-day break in a solid week of thunderstorms, and I'm taking advantage of the relatively-good priming weather. Nuclear Fridge
"Colonel, all we can see from down here in the trenches are the legs..." Amazing work you're putting in there. CommodusXIII
Another week has come and gone, and I'm still grinding away at the left leg. Here it is at quitting time last night: http://i.imgur.com/lyZdvQKl.jpg It's getting there, slowly. Hopefully I'll have it finished by the end of next week. Then I'll focus on the side turrets for a little bit, before starting the final major component! Kilofix
The more I work on it, the more I like it as well. :D Something's been nagging on my mind since yesterday evening, and I finally figured out what it is. The pictures of Forge World's model shows two TL lascannon turrets on its back, underneath the shoulder armor: I don't have a good place to put similar turrets on the back of mine - due to the way it's detailed, there isn't an open spot that's mirrored on either side. I do, however, have enough room to place turrets on its side. This would be reminiscent of this classic illustration, which I've already referenced earlier: http://i.imgur.com/2oqz9ZM.jpg I'd really only be using this in Apocalypse or other special games, so I'm not terribly worried about remaining consistent with Forge World's model. I had enough bits laying around from other projects to create a single mock-up, which I blue-tacked to the side of the torso for evaluation: http://i.imgur.com/KIzimB5l.jpg I wasn't sure until I tacked the mock-up to the model, but I actually like this quite a bit. It helps to further break up the slab-sidedness while still remaining true to the Lucius-pattern aesthetic. It's a unique feature of an old piece of artwork that, to the best of my knowledge, as never found expression in a model. And it's somewhat supported by Forge World's model. I also like the general feel, as it gives the Warlord the appearance of being a walking battleship. I can imagine it striding through a vast city, raking enemy positions in the buildings with lasfire as it passes. I also get mental images of the helicarriers from Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Yup, I think I'll do it. :) Just wondering Commodus, are you going to attach two turrets on each side of the Warlord? CommodusXIII
Three turrets, actually - two single lascannon turrets (firing together to count as twin-linked) and a single heavy bolter (counting as a bolt cannon). There's a picture on the previous page of the turret rings mounted to the side. I'm writing from my phone, otherwise I'd link it for you. When finished, it should look very similar to the artwork above. EDIT: Sorry, the picture is on Page 3. http://i.imgur.com/hxRbasol.jpg I was very productive today! The left leg is currently drying after its final ink wash. Tomorrow I'll mate it with the right leg/groin assembly and wrap up any touch-ups that need to be done. CommodusXIII
Ahead of schedule by a week and a half, actually! http://i.imgur.com/FI6j3a1l.jpg The lower half of the Titan is now finished. Originally, the two legs separated from the groin at the hips for transport. I've cemented all three pieces together. The first and only time the model was fully assembled, and right before the left ankle snapped, I could see the hip joint slowly rotate under the weight of the torso. The last thing I need is for the Titan to bend over on the battlefield! Sorry for the cluttered background. The only place I could take pictures in decent lighting was on my gaming table... http://i.imgur.com/tIreKATl.jpg The honor banner, loudspeakers and power cables. http://i.imgur.com/2JII0sLl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/iTCOBNWl.jpg Various angles around the legs. http://i.imgur.com/5k0Y3oKl.jpg Once again, here is Fraterrus Quartus and Gregor Lucan (Hastatus of the yet-to-be-completed Fraterrus Quintus) for scale. This Titan truly is a monster. http://i.imgur.com/nJsJBwDl.jpg I'm pretty sure that Lux Aeterna's toes grant a cover save... Well, now I'm going to take a day or two off before finishing up the side turrets. I'll probably start the torso and head over the July 4th weekend. Stay tuned! Kilofix
Hey Commodus, Sorry about the bother, had more questions but your headway is helping me with my build. What did you use to base coat? And what are you using to glue the smaller bits? Thanks! CommodusXIII
Not a bother at all!The first two coats are with Rustoleum dark grey sandable automobile primer. I follow this with two or more coats of Army Painter's Goblin Green spray, which matches Citadel's Warboss Green that I used for my Knights. I use Army Painter's color-matched acrylic paint for touch-ups. I bought directly from Army Painter, but many hobby stores stock them as well. The added bits are fixed with either Gorilla Glue superglue or E6000 adhesive. Superglue is very strong but very brittle, so I only use it on small bits that aren't likely to get snagged (like the rivets). E6000 dries somewhere between superglue and hot glue. It weathers abuse better, but is thick and gooey. I use it on larger bits that can hide the mess. Kilofix
What about the non-armored chassis? Did you just do grey primer then silver? Thanks again! I'm trying to figure out if Army Painter's gun metal primer is any good. CommodusXIII
All of the metal is brush painted with Vallejo's Liquid Metallics line. I primed the chassis with grey and did my best not to overspray with the green. The alcohol-based metallic paint goes on smooth with one coat over grey, but the green overspray took two or three passes to clean up. My Warlord came fully assembled, so I had to paint around the armor. With my Knights (and I imagine your FW Titans) it's easier to simply leave the armor off and spray everything separately. Let me know if you try AP's metallic spray! CommodusXIII
I've finished the first three of six side turrets, so now is a good time to take a short break and give an update! http://i.imgur.com/HlFXiY6l.jpg I was very happy to see that the Lucius pattern is still alive and well in the 40K universe. This artwork was published by Fantasy Flight Games for their new Forbidden Stars board game - though, the game itself features Warlord Titans and not Imperator Titans. The side turrets of the earlier Warlord Titan artwork appear here as well. http://i.imgur.com/P5CrbGPl.jpg The side cannons are relatively finished, pending washing and lens detailing once the accompanying mounts are ready. The lascannons are from the Imperial Baston kit, with the barrels hacked off and repositioned on the backside. This allows for a greater range of vertical rotation. The heavy bolters/bolt cannons have a similar arrangement. The barrels are from the SM Stormtalon kit, the magazines (opposite side) are from the Baal Predator kit and the flexible resin ammo feeds are from Zinge Industries. http://i.imgur.com/obTNMSzl.jpg The side cannons, washed and hung to dry. http://i.imgur.com/zeM2OkKl.jpg Once the wash is dry, I paint the lenses. First is a thick, watered-down coat of Evil Suns Scarlet. Second is a thinner coat of Blood for the Blood God, which I pool around the edge of the lens and then put one drop concentrated in the center. Finally, I'll touch up the frames with Ironbreaker. http://i.imgur.com/hOspz2vl.jpg The first three sets of turret mounts awaiting final clean-up and washing. They're also taken from the Imperial Bastion kit. As they'll be mounted horizontally, I sanded down the original skull decorations and replaced them with Opus Machina from the new Imperial Knight sprue. http://i.imgur.com/UhefaXol.jpg Three turret mounts after washing. The supports haven't been glued to the bases yet. In order to properly wash all of the parts, they have to be treated individually yet in their final alignment. http://i.imgur.com/uZunL7Gl.jpg The first three turrets are assembled. http://i.imgur.com/1erdKwYl.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/GYp8RjDl.jpg This is the first time that I've seen the turrets mounted to the model. It's just about what I imagined! CommodusXIII
With the impending release of FW's Mars-pattern Warlord Titan, I can finally draw some definitive conclusions about scaling. Here's Forge World's size comparison chart for their Titans: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Images/Product/AlternativeFW/large/99560108140_MarsPatternWarlordTitanBody15a.jpg As you can see, the Warhound comes up to its hips and the highest point on the Reaver is about at eye-level on the Warlord. The Mars-pattern stands 22.5 inches overall. Compare this to the EnGen Studios Lucius-pattern Warlord Titan that I'm working on. Here's a picture of the lower body of a similar model with FW's Reaver Titan: http://i.imgur.com/gk4kWFil.jpg The Reaver comes up to about hip-level. The EnGen Studios model stands about 36 inches to the top of the carapace humps. This puts the EnGen much closer to GW's old size comparison chart from Apocalypse: http://i.imgur.com/YLOG6RZ.jpg I'm pretty happy with the scaling of my model compared to the rest of the Titan line-up. Granted, it'll look a bit out of place next to Forge World's model, but the chances of multiple Warlords showing up to a party in my neck of the woods is fairly slim. And if that were to happen, I'd be having far too much fun to notice. Vel'Cona
Honestly, if your Warlord is bigger than theirs, I think this is a situation in which you should take pride, rather than shame.
