Kydoimos's Imperial Fists - Cataphractii WIP

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

So, here I am, creating a thread in which I'll post my progress on my different painting projects. That's a great step for me : I always found that painting was the less interesting part of the hobby. But still, I can't play an army which is not painted. So...

This thread will also help me to keep motivated for the ETL IV, for which I pledged a Terminator unit of 10 Marines and their Spartan. These guys will be part of my future Imperial Fists pre-Heresy force, a 3,000 points army (the list is here).

I've already started with my Templars : 10 guys ready to march against the enemies of the Imperium. But still on foot, though... Their transport will come soon after the ETL I hope. Anyways, here are the first pictures :

The full squad :

The Champion (with Solarite power gauntlet) :

The nuncio-vox/radio guy :

The Vexilla bearer :

Bases are not completely done. I plan to make something better, but I don't know what or how yet. Something urban to fit with the Legion's fluff but I need to think about it. And I'd like to add some weathering/battle dameges, but since I've never done this, I'll wait a bit more before starting. That's also a new step for me and I don't want to miss it.

Pictures are not excellent (made with my phone) and they "help" to see all the ugly parts of the minis, but that's as close as perfection I can get smile.png

I hope you'll enjoy them. All comments and critics are most welcome of course!

See ya!

Gosh, two comments already ! smile.png Thanks!

@Vel'Cona : thanks! Yellow is a tricky colour indeed, but since I started diluting my paint, I feel that the overall result is much better.

@Olis : don't worry, my will won't fail in front of the enemy, I didn't chose the IF for nothing. And the proof is that I made some progress with my Termies !

I worked a bit on their shield arms this week end I'll post pics soon.

It's funny though, I chose the IF to paint yellow and since I started them, the colour I use more is black huh.png

See you soon for next update!

Some progress was made on the Cataphractii :

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q578/kydoimos2/8_zpsamtehlpr.jpg

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q578/kydoimos2/10_zps9fv1rfme.jpg

The right arm will be finished tomorrow. I had to work a bit on the axes since they were designed for left-handed marines. But they are bearing their shields with it so I had to exchange the hands holding bolters with axes. And I am on schedule : 3 guys this week, 2 for the next then 3 again and the last 2 guys.

There are some details on the shoulders that needs to be corrected, I'll see to that tomorrow.

Comments and critics welcome!

All right, update time ! I finished the three first Terminators early this morning, and here they are :

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q578/kydoimos2/11_zpsnkkdbzyv.jpg

And the whole group :

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q578/kydoimos2/15_zpsow3qeys5.jpg

The base are not done yet, I'll do them after painting all the squad. And I'd like to use battle damage and weathering too. I've never done that before so I'll wait until everything is done. By the way, if you have a good tutorial for these technics, I'm open to any suggestions smile.png

But now, it's your turn to get to work smile.png I have two questions :

- about the yellow : should I add a coat of Casandora Yellow or not ? I think the color is yellow-ish enough, but maybe a yellow wash would be better ?

- about the brown : I just used plain Scorched Brown from the old Citadel paints. But I don't feel quite satisfied, it lacks something. What would you add ?

Next step : the two last guys in order to complete the squad. And this time, I'll paint them yellow like this :

Well, apart from the fact that I'm done with black Imperial Fists you mean ? :)

There are two reasons : first, I didn't want a full yellow squad. Just some models with a different paint scheme give more variety on the board. And secondly, it's also a way to create a bakcground for my minis. Those in black will be Marines that fought in a particular campaign or were rewarded following acts of valour while fighting. I'll have to find a story for each of them, but that's the idea.

All right people, time for an update. The search for a new flat prevented me from painting as much as needed these last few days, but I managed to finish the last two guys nonetheless :

And the whole squad done :

Like I said in my previous post, the black Marines are to be considered as veterans of particular valor, hence the difference in colour. I'll try to write some stories about them but anyone know where I could find an inspiration for IF's marines names, I would be grateful.

Hope you'll enjoy these! The next step is to paint the five last Marines including special weapons bearers.

All right people, time for an update. It's been a while since I've been there but since I'm moving out in a month, a lot had to be prepared. I must confess that I also suffered an episode of complete loss of motivation. My cataphractii were desperatly asking to be painted but I really couldn't get started.

Seeing the 1st of August coming quite fast now, I ordered the Spartan and I could start again! I painted those two guys :

http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q578/kydoimos2/21_zpshjasogbv.jpg

They are still WIP : a lot of small details need to be corrected but the main work is done. The guy with the flamer is magnetized so I could give him the Reaper autocannon or the plasma blaster. The hammer guy will be the squad's sergeant.

I still need to paint three Termies but I'm facing a problem : I want to give them chainfists. But these weapons are left-handed, and I still need to put a shield on those guys on the very same arm. If you have an idea to solve this, I'm willing to hear it :D

I love the way the last 2 turned out. The yellow and dark gold look great together.

Thanks! Sorry for the long delay for my answer, I hope you'll enjoy those too!

looking great! I really like the contrast of the yellow/black, and I agree with others-- the shade of yellow you picked looks really nice. The  cataphractii are off to an excellent start, too. Glad you powered through the lack of motivation time and are back at it-- keep it going, man!

Thanks geektom! And it means a lot that you like the yellow. I struggled a lot at the beginning to find a way to paint it nice and after a bit of despair I must say that I'm quite satisfied with it too :)

Thanks a lot Rhetoricus. I had a look at your Fists and I must say they really look awesome. Are you using an airbrush ? I was wondering because the paint is really clean.

But you said more yellow ? Well, here you go : the Spartan !

Not an easy model to build, but it's so cool on a table. Can't wait to play this beast to be honest! I am planning to do some weathering soon but for now, my priority is to finish my vow for the ETL. Hope you'll like it!

Yeah, weathering will come in due time. However, I've never done this before so I'm a bit reluctant I must say, I'd prefer not to ruin everything. So I'll finish my ETL vow first and then the weathering.

Thanks for the kind words Ky. No I don't use an air brush, I do it all with a brush. Although I think my method is overly convoluted and involves way more work then it needs to. I'm working on reducing the amount of steps and speeding my work up.

The Spartan looks proper badass mate, love it. This force is really coming along nicely. Looking forwards to your next update bud.

Great start! Really looking forward to seeing this progress. It's helping me choose my color scheme for mine. Keep up the fantastic work!

Thank you both.

And glad that my work could help you choose a scheme for your Marines Gearthart. Honestly, your termies are really nice and I must say I love the bases you make. I really need to improve myself on this!

Oh, and an apothecary should pop in soon.
