Including Draigo in your list

Draigo is pure fun for me. He has a big upside and a big downside.

He's a massive point cost..... in an army that always struggles to have numbers. But, for me it's his access to AP2 at initiative, and the only storm shield in my army!

What a great tank when I actually get Sanctuary. When I don't... he's a 'good' tank, but not great.

Conversely, what would you trade Draigo in for? Maybe that's the question we should ask.

If I say to you, in my left hand I have Draigo, in my right hand I have "X" at the approximate same points cost, what would it be in that hand? What would you choose over him?

Draigo is the best Land Raider in the game. Treating him as anything else is the oath to disappointment. Letting him be the number one transport in the GK army opens up a level of flexibility that just cannot be matched.

Can you charge from a Draigo?

I actually think he's a better tank. I can replicate the landraider option, but I can't replicate the tanking option.

Let me ask you this- IF you could guarantee Gate on a Libby, would you feel the same way?

I already fish for Gate on my Libby, so it's not like that isn't my goal. With a second Gate, I gate two units instead of one

Not if you Deep Striked that turn, although he is open topped.

No but I can 'Draigo' from a Landraider.... wait, was that your point?

Honestly have no idea what else I would take if not Draigo. Perhaps a third dreadknight? But even that has limitations.

And yes, you can charge from a Draigo. Most people are too afraid to get close to him.

I kinda like the model. I definitely like his rules. I hate that he's Lord of War and I really don't like his 'always stuck in the warp' background.

I'm thinking about converting him to use as a counts-as Supreme Grandmaster from the chapters history. AP2 at initiative is great, a 3++/2++ is great, guaranteed Gate is great.

My lists generally look like an Inquisitor, a Librarian/Grandmaster, 20 Terminators, 2 Dreadknights, and seasoned to taste with Purifers, Interceptors and Stormravens. Taking Draigo probably means I'd drop one of the Terminator squads, which really leaves the list short-bodied.

Why?

In previous editions he was an HQ choice so I could just take Draigo to lead my army. Now that he's a LoW I have to take Draigo and a Librarian. I mean, Librarians are good but that makes for a very top heavy army and I'd much rather have the choice to take Draigo as an HQ choice.

I guess with the current fluff, it actually makes huge sense to have him as a LoW, because how can he play the role of a HQ when he'll randomly pop out of the warp from time to time. Supreme grand master or not, he just wouldn't.

But game play wise it is kinda lame, it essentially makes draigo an extra 100+pts

More expensive.

Allies or more OS units. I play differently than most people I guess. 1850 pure Grey Knights for me is 5x5 Strikes in Rhinos +1x Termies + 1 Libby + 3x Dreadknight.

For me, Draigo is the sole Prot Pally tanking a raid filled with Rets, and all that entails. As such, when (s)he isn't Gating about the battlefield, (s)he's tanking Mythic Blackrock Foundry on Area-52 (and is a Blood Elf, because they are the best)

It's narrative to forge, after all.

Okay, one more time, but this time in English, please?

You don't want that. I understood it, and the act of understanding it is truly horrific, as it requires having raided in WoW.

DK > Pally. :P

Paladin have three 'specs' in WoW, a Healing spec (Holy), a Tanking spec (Proteciton) and a DPS spec (Retribution).

Sometimes (if the class in question has enough self healing) you can clear Raids with all members playing a single class (has to be a hybrid though).  This is usually done with DKs, but Pallies can be just as able.

I thought it was a terrible descion to half put in Warlock Tanks, then decide that was a bad idea. :(

Tanking 'locks would have been awesome.

Doubt someone who hasn't played WoW would know what DPS means too.. just sayin!

I attempted to order Draigo a couple days ago... GW wants 10$ shipping. That's 50% the cost of the model, I was so bummed. So I got the big birthday coming up so hopefully my wife will order me a 10 man PA squad with Draigo to get a good deal! msn-wink.gif

"Whelp Group!?! Whelp Group!?!"

Could we please keep this 40K related?

There are a few ways to get around his tanking methods.... I had it happen in my Tau game, but again, I consider him a tank above a transport option....

Since Gate is so important, and Sanctuary to make the whole thing complete, I've been considering using Draigo with Stern and a Libby for the HQ/LoW of the list. It would be an immensely capable unit, but just so many points I can't convince myself to really try it.

(I found my old Captain Stern model, man he's ugly!)

I've used Stern with Draigo before at 1850, Just for garaunteed Sanctuary, and found that I almost always get Sanctuary on a Liber Libby. So I stopped taking Stern.

And I would say the while my Pallies are tops, my Warriors beat my DKs as tanks this edition. Just say'n.

In case you didn't know: the updated Hector Rex in Siege of Vraks 2nd edition has guaranteed Sanctuary and is overall no too shabby. I will definitely try fielding him.

As a competitive list? That's unusual, but I like it. Now why would you say that using 5 x 5 in Rhino's works, when so many people won't do the same thing with basic marines?

The 5 by 5 might work (I'm guessing) because the 3 Dreadknights are such a massive threat it probably gives the rhino's some good breathing space?

What kind of special weapons are you taking?

Stern and Draigo is a nice combo. The problem I'm having right now is I'm completely addicted to owning the Psychic phase.

I'm finding I'm winning some games (probably most games) by owning the Psychic phase. With wargear + 2 x 3 WL Libbies, this is very plausible even against some of the recent Eldar I've been up against (though I admit I am getting stuff canceled far more often against them).

So I got this Inquisitor lord I'm building from bits right.. and so I orders up 5 GK terminator legs, 5 GK terminator Torsos, 5 GK terminator shoulder pads sets.. but then I realized I had the Shield of Baal starter set sitting there and that it's got 5 BA terminator parts that I'm never going to make into BA terminators..  so I jacked the legs and cape and stuff out of that set.. leaving me with 5 GK terminators sans arms.

That being Said, I'm going to build me up a 5 man squad of Paladins (yawn I know) to escort Draigo around and cost too many points all the while!  But seriously I don't care.  I just play for fun mostly and I'm thinking of a unique paint scheme for them that will make me proud to field them with Draigo.

Since they can be Gated with him, I'm going to magnetize up two for Heavy weapons (if memory serves 2 can take big guns at 5 mens) and do the standard apothecary.  Onward to glory!

Yes, as a competitive list. Interesting question. I don't know if it wouldn't work with basic marines to be honest, it should, I think Rhinos will make a comeback. Some things which might have to do with it:

-Marines have Droppods, making Rhinos less attractive, also because bolters work best at 12" range while stormbolters are fine at 24" range.

-Marines have acces to cheap Bikes with a ton of special rules with White Scars and Khân, Bikes being an excellent platform for Grav weaponry.

I think Rhinos work for different reasons. Mind you, we're speaking Pure Grey Knights here, I'm suggesting it for that only here and now. I think it works because of different reasons:

-There is lots of powerfull shooting going on at the moment, Rhinos work as a Void Shield in a way for your GK's. Rhinos don't care much when they get shot at with D-weapons. You can have 10 Rhinos for the price of 1 Imperial Knight, that alone shows that Rhinos have an extremely good defensive profile for their points.

-Objective Secured. 10-12 objective secured unit in a list is tough to play against when playing with objectives (and every good game has objectives in them). It's hard to kill them all.

-Flexibility! You can reserve some Rhinos/squads and/or leave some Rhinos empty. You can let some GK squads deepstrike still basicly when you think it's a good thing to do.

-Rhinos keep your infantry save often even when destroyed, by hiding GK's behind them (still doable with 32mm bases! msn-wink.gif )

-Good mobility with Rhinos having a potential 18" move and GK's being able to deepstrike.

-Dreadknights are the ultimate support units for lists as such, although Imperial Knights would work fine too. You need fast close combat support for Rhino based lists like such and preferably with shooting as well (so you don't have to assault when it's better to shoot). Dreadknights cannot be ignored, they wíll be killed first or you will simply win the game. This means your Rhinos and Grey Knights will come after, which basicly means they have to table you or you will have some OS left. I've never been tabled at a tournament in my life and don't expect to with a list like this either.

I'm not saying this is thé best thing to do with pure Grey Knights, it's just an idea. Don't take my word for it either, unless you want to. As you might recall I was busy moving. Well I moved (to France) by now and I managed to track down some of the French ETC team. I'm hopefully able to get games in with them soon, in which I'll probably test these kind of Rhino based lists for GK's. Apart from that the tournament scene in France seems... dissapointing, no good overall organization leading to few good singles tournaments. (They have a lot of team tournaments though lol).

Edit: Psycannon for the Grey Knights as special weapon (it makes each unit technicly able to kill anything in the game, which is important in this case)!

Did I just suggest a list with Psycannon wielding Strike Squads in Rhinos?! No Comms Relay?! No NSF?! I must be mad!
