Magnetizing the new imperial knight kit

Recommended Posts

This might be in the wrong forum but then perhaps a friendly soul can help to move it to where it belongs.

I picked up the new imperial knight today and as the options have increased dramatically with the new kit I was wondering if someone has figured out how to magnetize the kit to get the most options out of it? I'm no master modeller myself so I was hoping someone would have figured out something clever already?

Not sure on the new kit (yet - mine is shipping today), but I've been getting the gun arm on the old one magnetized to not only take both weapons, but also allow for swapping to a different gun mount.

For the old kit, to give you the ability to mount both guns on the same mount, you have to fudge it a bit. This basically means attaching the battle canon ammo feed as usual, and trimming the other side of the mount to take the thermal canon fuel feed. Also, to allow for swapping between weapon mounts, you need to magnetize the whole weapon mount so it can be taken apart - the swivel on the upper arm is too large to fit through the opening on the weapon mount.

Some thing to remember: depending on the size magnet you use on the weapon mount, you may need to make a platform to drill into/rest the magnet on (you can see this in the first pic, where I used some sprue for the magnet to attach to). You can also see where I've added some sprue to the inside of the battle cannon on preparation of magnetizing it.

Yeah, the 'elbow joint' would be much easier than what I'm working on at the 'wrist joint', and as the new Knight bonus sprue appears to have extra 'lower arms' for both ranged and melee weapons would be a good way to go. For that, all you need to do is shave the bottom lip off the shoulder piece so the lower arm can slide freely on and off, add a touch of sprue inside the lower arm to allow a place for a magnet to attach, then drill holes for your magnets (recommend 0.25"/6mm magnets - they're plenty strong for the waist of my first Knight).
