Apostle of the 30th Host
I'll apologise now as this is going to be a weird post, but has anyone else noticed that in the new Skitarii plastic kit, all the bionic hands only have 4 fingers (thumb and three fingers)? I just noticed this the other day while doing some fine detail on them and at first thought I had filed one away byistake while cleaning the model up but all of them have it. Not sure if this has come up before so sorry if someone has already mentioned it but I just found it strange - I don't think there is anything in the codex to explain this. Anyway, was just wondering if anyone else thought this was odd or if they know of anything in the background that might explain why. Cheers. Vash
Well I did notice it too. Practically we don't really need five fingers to function properly. So, when creating bionics/cyborg replacement, there is no real reason to add the extra "not so useful finger". Of course there is the issue with "ghost limbs" but I guess the mechanicus will subdue that one way or another. By removing one finger on millions of units, lots can be saved. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/307454-weird-observation-in-the-skitarii-kit/#findComment-4038572 Share on other sites
Mr Bill
I bet they looked too much like power fists when they tried 4 fingers + thumb. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/307454-weird-observation-in-the-skitarii-kit/#findComment-4038574 Share on other sites

Gorthaur
Maybe because it just further highlights the barely human nature of the Skitarii, it makes them more strange and martian/otherwordly than the imperial guard. Or something like that, otherwise its just an odd design choice. CommodusXIII
I did notice, and had the same conclusion as Gorthaur. The difference actually helped a lot during painting - it was easy to tell what should be painted as undersuit, and what should be painted as metal! Timotheus
Unless you need to play a Terran era musical instrument. I fear Skitarii rarely have the leisure to do that. Maybe because it just further highlights the barely human nature of the Skitarii, it makes them more strange and martian/otherwordly than the imperial guard. Or something like that, otherwise its just an odd design choice. That's my guess, too. The new Datasmith only has 3 fingers... MithrilForge
Also if you look the Kastelan robots and the data smith have three digit powerfists (as timotheus also pointed out above) the dragon of mars is actually Homer Simpson !!! Apostle of the 30th Host
Cheers for the replies guys. I, like Vash, had concluded that it was probably just because the extra finger was not necessary but I really like your suggestion there Gorthaur. I actually like that they have been modelled that way, but was very interested to hear other people's takes on it. Scurvydog
Considering they only have 2 toes on their bionic legs, still having 4 fingers could be considered lucky. Considering how their superiors modify themselves, it is safe to say they do not care at all about retaining human aesthetics, only efficiency. About the ghost limbs I think there might be need for some suspension of disbelief, this is fiction after all, but with their minds altered and constantly controlled it is most likely a non issue ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/307454-weird-observation-in-the-skitarii-kit/#findComment-4039033 Share on other sites
abraxus
You're all reading too much into it. Frater Cornelius
You're all reading too much into it. They put three fingers so that you can use those hands as artificial limbs for Tau conversions *ducks and runs* Or have a justification why your humans have four fingers because you used Tau arms. That, or AdMech looked at Tau and have concluded that their good dakka comes from having four fingers. Go figure. CommodusXIII
Or the AdMech realized that a pinky finger doesn't really do a whole lot, so it was scrapped in revision once upon a time. Targetlock
maybe because the total number of fingers and toes adds up to 12, which as said in the codex is a sacred number to the Adeptus Mechanicus. Battybattybats
Phantom appendage issues would be dealt with by using the neural body-memory map circuits for other things. Now that superfluous pinky nerve system likely controls some vital element of the shoulder camera the Magi watch the battle through. The mechanicus never deletes anything... so everything would be reprocessed into something useful, whether re-wiring nerves or turning all those pinky fingers into ration wafers. Wednesday is soylent pinky day... Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/307454-weird-observation-in-the-skitarii-kit/#findComment-4045756 Share on other sites
