Inspiration required!

Evening all,

I've been ridiculously quiet on the 30K front recently, I've been working on some Fantasy stuff and some other projects. I've ended up neglecting 30K and becoming slightly fed up of the lack of any fellow players in my area, I'd rather not play 40K players as my one and only game was pretty much a disaster against a Necron list.

I've always been a traitor apart from a loyal Mechanichum force I had been working on but I'm looking to do one of the loyalist legions. I know for sure it won't be Raven Guard or Salamanders. I'm leaning slightly towards Ultramarines, the upgrade kits are nice and they will no doubt be getting a lot of attention over the next few months! What do you guys think?

Any ideas on helping me rekindle my love for 30K?

Thanks! msn-wink.gif

Stepping away has always helped me, I have been having spurts of motivation through the last couple of months and walking away for a while is the best thing you can do. The other thing that has helped is having gamers that want to be part of the heresy, we conducted a Zone mortalis Campaign starting @ 500pts and over 4 months it expanded to 1000pts we are now in the 3000pt range! I know you don’t want to play against 40k but getting your army out there is a way to advertise the Heresy and entice other players and get more souls aboard the Heresy Train!!!

***EDITED for Engrish

I've pretty much had a break for about 2/3 months now, in terms of 30K. Normally after doing some other types of models, in this case Fantasy, I always go back to my 30K stuff inspired.

I don't like the background or colour schemes of the Raven Guard and Salamanders, just not my cup of tea!

I used to play quite a bit using my 30K army. Always enter a 30K model into all the local stores painting comps but just doesn't seem to take off here.

How good are your modeling skills?

Perhaps a diorama piece will help fuel the fire. The one big thing I've noticed is that there are no aliens in the 30k range. Eldar and Orks were very much present at the time. The Squats haven't been eaten yet and perhaps the Hrud are more present now than in 40k. You have the bugs on Murder from the HH books that have not even been sculpted yet.

I have trouble breaking into 30k mainly due to financial reasons, but I would gladly play a 30k army. My beloved First Legion is still under represented in 30k and that has an impact.

Getting back on topic, when I was trying to promote more LotR game play. I brought out two pre-made small armies for people to try out. I'd say go ahead with the Ultramarines (or the nemesis to your own legion) and build up 500-750 point force. Then you could provide both armies for a 30k game.

Not even the Old Legion history, the Pale Nomads and the Rams of Saturnyne?

The Nomads, and those other Terrans exiled by Corax, are utterly ripe for insane backstories. Savage monsters of grey plate could be just as solid a beginning point, just as XIX Legion Siege Company could. Noblility in exile, still waging war in the old ways; with glittering blade and black marble inlaid mantlets, polished pearl armour dripping with ancient honours of Old Earth, trimmed in bejeweled onyx; his very high born status possibly the reason for his exile, despite his honourable ways.

A XVIII Legion Retribution Warband, the most unstable of Vulkan's sons, utterly convinced their Father is dead, dive behind Horus's lines, conducting a merciless scorched earth campaign against anybody bearing Horus's banner. Matte, carbon-scored warplate, the old symbols and craftwork burned away, leaving behind nightmare daemons with glowing red eyes, armour as charred black and scarred as their bare visages, fire casting from their weapons into crowds of screaming citizens loyal to the Arch-Traitor. No remorse, burn it all. We are retribution, We are the raging fire, we are the dragon of old.

Argh...I absolutely adore this idea. Maybe someday.

I've had the exact same problem you have. Here's what I found for my night lords. Read a good book on them. Grab some cheap models off ebay and paint them In a nice color. Look at some Plogs though you may want to play another legion if you do this ;). Since your thinking about ultramarines, watch gladiator(on netflix, I swear I wanted to play roman themed space marines after that) or another roman themed movie. Or if your into history read about the Romans. Play a 40k video game, dawn of war with mods and some friends is a blast. Or you can be like me and watch the big lebowski and for no reason whatsoever want to play iron warriors. Inspiration is everywhere man. I hope this helps.

Ps: also never ever ever say that you won't do this legion or that one. Trust me look you'll find something in a plog or read something and then your at forgeworld ready to by it. For example when I started I said to myself I would never do iron warriors and hear I am trying to figure out if I should continue my night lords or go with iron warriors.

Well, depending on when you want to set your army in the timeline, they were all loyalists at some point. 30k is freedom. Don't shackle yourself, brother.

Lots of great ideas!

I keep drifting back to the Traitor legions-now looking at Death Guard, Emperor's Children or Word Bearers. I currently have around 4000pts of Iron Warriors so I'm looking for something that will play a bit differently from them, less big guns!

Oh yes this is an idea I may have to pursue... Dang it

Bah quote messed up on phone

there, fixed that for you. these guys dont get enough love. if you want post Istvaan loyalty, Might I direct your attention towards Nathiel Garro.....

or, if you want a Really cool color scheme, Dusk raiders. grey armor, red arm = win

When I took the time to decide which Legion to go for, I read as many plogs in this forum (and in the WIP one too) as I could. Whilst I've gone for the one I figured I would in the end, there are more than a few that sorely tempted me (the authors of those topics are amongst those who have already posted...). If nothing else, they've shown me other aspects of Legions I wouldn't have even considered before.

tl:dr - read a few topics, keep an open mind, and be inspired ^_^

Thanks guys! I think I've pretty much settled on a plan! I'm going to do 2 750pts forces, one Word Bearers and one Ultramarines, and use them to demo some 30K games and hopefully get some interest built up in the local area. What do you think? Should I do similar built forces or mix it up?

Semi-similar, with a few Legion-unique items mixed to create a level of difference. For example, swap out at least one WB Sergeant's PW with a Tainted weapon, just for the fun of it. Or give one 5-man Vet squad Dark Channeling, and sculpt them to reflect this. This will help entice, and allow someone a chance to get a feel for a Legion and it's ways.

Do you have access to a space hulk board? Blood in the Void missions using Zone Mortalis rules is a great way to introduce folks into HH at low points, the close confines making the game fast, easy to comprehend, and fun as hell. The board could be easily make out of cardboard, if need be, and makes bringing terrain with you much easier.

A small 4'x4' shaceship layout, with evil looking red guys, and noble looking blue guys, will draw in even the most jaded gamer with curiosity alone.

I enjoyed reading about the one Hyaenidae played against another board member (forgot their name...sorry sad.png ). Cracking way of playing a game and quite cost effective too happy.png

You got cereal boxes? You got a pen? Scissors?

If so, you got everything you need to make a ugly spaceship layout. Even though I have Space Hulk tiles (all the editions snap together, btw), I'm using plasitcard and cardboard to create fighter bays and a proper bridge to fight for, that can be easily added anywhere. This is cool too, cuz you can go 3-d with the new sections, and make elevated gantries to get some trigger-pullers to rain hell on your opponents.

There are also a crap-ton of Cardstock 28mm terrain companies out there, and even a few that make ship interiors, all for much cheaper than SH's exorbitant price.

There is always a way, brother. The question is, do you have the will and desire?  :)
