Airbrushing Vallejo Varnish tips and or suggestions?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone has any tips or suggestions for airbrushing  Vallejo Matt varnish?

I typically thin my paints for airbrushing with distilled water however I'm a little hesitant to do this with this stuff.   To me it seems like it would most likely cause a horrible frosting effect.

Due to my location don't have access to any kind of liquitex thinning medium but I do have a small pot of GW Lahmain.

I realize this will take some experimenting with but I just wanted to do some research before diving in with some test sprays this weekend.

Thanks!

I thin my Vallojo Varnishes, and all my other airbrush paints, with Vallejos airbrush thinner. Since they adjusted the formula on thier thinner some time ago, I find it to be the superior product out there.

And I zero frosting or other issues when varnishing.

Ok thanks!  I hadn't seen the Airbrush specific thinner before and it looks like it includes a drying retarder.

Next time I order paints I'll have to pick up a bottle.

Do you thin varnish the same as your paints?

Would you say 20% or more?

Thanks again!

I aim for the consistency of skimmed milk.

I thinned some with Tamiya thinners, but it was a while back and I did so over a white base.  Worth checking if you already have the product - but spray a test example first - which I would recommend with any new paint mix to avoid that frosting :)
