brandon92
The problem I'm having is that it seems my Mephiston red color is much darker than what I'm seeing in pictures and video tutorials of painting. Much darker, I use black primer and the pictures I have seen also use black primer. The GW painting tutorials paint Mephiston Red straight over Chaos Black spray primer, and the color is a rich bright red. My basecoat currently looks darker than khorne red. I used Imperial Primer does that make a difference? Multiple coats have been applied. I'm just curious to find out if the pictures and videos are maybe over saturated, or i'm missing something in the painting step. Lucio
Mephisto Red is one of the paints I'd describe as low quality in the GW range. It has a tendancy to be quite thick, but also doesn't thin down well either as it tends towards pink. Best advice is to thin it with about 10% Lahmian Medium if you're painting it over the Chaos Black and apply thin layers to build the colour up.Alternatively, base coat with Khorne Red, wash with Carroberg Crimson and then paint on the Mephisto Red. The photo below was painted using this method, over a Chaos Black spray. Razblood
I've had the opposite with Mephiston Red and found it to be easy to thin and give great coverage. Might be you'e had a bad/mislabeled pot maybe? Make sure to shake the paint well first, so it mixes well. thinning with a bit of lahmian medium or water can work well. It is a bit dark, its best done in multiple thin coats to build up a rich color. Its possible the GW video does have a filter over it that messes with the colors/saturation or its just in a very very well lit room. I plan on experimenting more with this color soon, as knowing how to use reds is important with the mechanicus.
