Why do you play Sisters?

Lord Lee

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, so I am looking at starting my own Sisters of Battle army and I wanted to see why other players chose to do the same.

Why do you play Sisters?

What's your favorite bit of Sisters fluff?

What makes Sisters a better army then all the rest to you?

And what Order do you play?

Thanks

Lord Lee.

I play Sisters because the cover of Codex: Witchhunters was amazing and because I like fielding an army of multi-ethnic super-fanatical religious warrior women to kick arse in a war-torn far future.

My favourite bit of Sisters background is probably the short story where the canoness is writing with a pen studded with sharp bits so that it hurts and cuts her hand, because the God-Emperor suffers so why shouldn't we?

Hm. I don't know about a better army; I play what I have begun to term the 'Army of the Imperium', so I see Sisters as fitting into that and providing a nice compliment to my Space Marines, Imperial Guard, and Inquisitorial forces. They do close-range shock assault better than the Guard, and have a great place in the Imperium as the fighting arm, not just of the Ecclesiarchy, but of the Ordo Hereticus.

My order is the Order Minoris of the Pure Blood, based in the Paridon Sector in the Eastern Fringe. Red armour, white cloth. "The Blood of Martyrs is the Seed of the Imperium."

I used to play them because they were fun and rare, and the army downright brutal once they got close in. The issue is actually getting close to things that don't want you anywhere near them. My favorite thing about the Sororitas is definitely rarity and the fact that many people see them as playing 40k on hard mode. I got a lot of respect just for playing Sororitas. In my honest opinion, they are not a better army than all the rest, though they do have some perks that would be undoubtedly OP in a more fleshed out codex (looking at you dominions). I did not play an order however, as I just painted them up the way I wanted, then stripped them because the paint job did not do the models justice.

A word of warning though, it is very easy to get tired of playing an army where you have almost no options. You can play the big blob, which is not as good as it used to be. You can play the meched MSU up close range shooter, which is probably the most effective build right now. You can play the not MSU meched up close range shooter, which is fine as well. Or you can play the assualt oriented army, which is IMHO utter trash. I have shelved and contemplated eBaying my Sororitas because the options are just not there. Keep another Army on backup that can give you a break from fielding the same censored.gif over and over again, it will keep you from getting burned out.

I play Sisters mostly because I love their fluff. They appeal to me for being a perfect combination of what is best and worst with the Imperium of Man and with humanity itself. They are not post-human products of super science, they are the pinnacle of pure human will and faith. The brutal, fascist imagery is appealing in the way that stuff is meant to be, but since it's a ridiculous sci-fi game it is "safe" to enjoy.

I have to also admit that they appealed to me also because no one else really seemed to play them. They had a mystique about them, like playing them was special. There definitely is a coolness to having an army many people think of as rare. That appeals to the show-off in me.

They are also fun to play. I play the MSU shooty mech version mostly, but also have assault capability when I want to make that list too. They are different enough from my Chaos Marines to add variety to my experience but similar enough that I don't have to radically change my general strategies.

I don't know that I do have a favorite bit of Sisters fluff. They are all around cool to me, I guess. I like a lot of the artwork, and not just the Battle Sisters but all of the Ecclesiarchal themed stuff.

What makes them best? Clearly they are best because GW got their models right the first time...

I am moving from a DIY ordo minoris to Our Martyred Lady. I like the intense look of the black and red, and since I started my Lamenters project I'm getting my yellow fix there.

I play sisters bc the first 40k model I saw was a Penitent Engine and I knew I needed it in my life.

Fluffwise? I love the one where a group of eldar were confident in their hiding place while an Immolator rolled up slowly. They're all, "the mon-keigh cannot hurt us from here!", then the immolator spits out some flame and roasts them all.

Sisters are super-specialized. They know what they want to do and they have tools to do it. IMO that's better than a codex that lets you do all the things, bc at some point you just lose focus.

I play my own Order. :D

I play sisters because of the challenge in wining and the play style. I enjoy the 40k universe its not the good guys win the end:-) its a horrible place where the imperium rules with a iron fist. Sisters will enforce & persecute the laws regardless of the enemy or odds to them no sacrifice is too small for the emperor

Favorite fluff. A Covents over run by nids one of the scenes stealers have ambushed a squad. The superior takes on the broodlord 1 on 1 charges and wounds it!! Even though she knows the outcome & her squad helps out its her sacrifice that inspires

As a sisters player the odds are stacked against you so be warned

There is a steep learning curve early on as they don't play like any other army but its very rewarding

I actually like that, its part of the charm of playing sisters & makes beating "invincible" armies even better

I play order of the bloody rose

I play Sisters because a slew of reasons. While other armies eventually bore me, I know I can always bring out the Sisters to have a good, fun, knock-down drag-out fight that, no matter who I'm facing, will be a close run battle of tactics and luck - as opposed to a rofltstomp or an inevitable demise. I also love the concept of nuns with guns... and flamethrowers.

It's like you take a Space Marine and say "what could make him cooler?"

Instead of adding more super-genetic-psycho-organic modification, you take it all away. You have a regular human left in power armor and all the armies of hell at the gates. And she doesn't even flinch. Pure. Badass.

Favourite fluff... hm, a hard one. I'm gonna have to cheat a bit and say the Second Siege of Terra - not technically Sisters, but rather their predecessor the Brides of the Emperor, held the Ecclesiastical Palace for over a year against the entire Martian tech-guard, the entire Imperial Fists chapter, and three of their Successor Chapters, including the Black Templars. The siege only ended when Alicia Dominca found out that Vandire had betrayed the Emperor's wishes and killed him herself, before inviting the attackers in.

As for why Sisters are the best army... to me, it's the fact that what they do, they're very good at, and when I play them, if I'm in the mood to ram my army down the enemies' throat as far as it will go without worrying about fancy tactics, I can.

I play Order of the Sacred Tome, with some elements of Our Martyred Lady and now a model of the Locked Shield.

Why do you play Sisters?

A wide variety of reasons. Mostly because the army looks better.

What's your favorite bit of Sisters fluff?

The short story Daemonblood, followed closely by the beheading of Goge Vandire

What makes Sisters a better army than all the rest to you?

Perfect WH40K aesthetic miniatures sculpted by the right hand of the Emperor himself, and a delightfully straightforward drive, march, or jet across the table and set fire to the enemy approach to warfare.

And what Order do you play?

Mostly Ebon Chalice. I also have Martyred Lady in their classic black robes, and Valorous Heart.

I play Sisters as the models themselves I thought were top notch when I first saw them with Witchhunters.   I still like them.  Not many of the other 40k armies outside of Slaanesh demons and Emperors children interest me.  They are still my favorite army.

I like the fluff for the 2nd siege of Terra.  Where not technically Sisters of battle yet.  It gives you the purpose of these ladies and I like that.

I have had gripes about the digital codex and the white dwarf.  At the end of the day though.  Its nice not to have a billion choices.  After playing with the digital codex I like it a lot better then the White dwarf one.  I still love when I bring my Sisters out, people go wow what are those.  I do tend to enjoy my games with them.  As who ever I play the game tends to be pretty bloody most of the time and not one sided.

I made my own minor order as a offshoot of the Order Hospitaller.

I play Sisters because of a combination of pretty much all the reasons above, the models, the fluff, the game play (Flamers FTW!), the rarity...

The beheading of Vandire is pretty much the defining moment (litterally!) for me in the fluff.

I would mirror again here, the Army may not be the "best" persay, but I love the direct feel that playing Sisters gives.  They have thier faith and will drive straight into the maw of any enemy without a second thought.  They play that way.  Also, the Armies of the Imperium concept works great in the fluff when playing Sisters as well.

I play the Order of the Valkyrie Ascendant, an Ordo Minoris dedicated to the fallen Saint Roskva formally of the Imperial Army, slain on the planet Nemessos 942.

Why do you play Sisters?

- Why not?

What's your favorite bit of Sisters fluff?

- The fluffy ruffles around the tops of our socks we wear while not on duty.

What makes Sisters a better army then all the rest to you?

- No tainted Y chromosome in out genes.

And what Order do you play?

- OooML!

I had written most of the following yesterday and lost it all with a misplaced backspace :grrrr:

So I’m just getting around to answering the questions again.

I started playing with CSM long ago.  I liked the models and the opportunities for easy and fun conversions just could not be beat.  I tried to stay away from Sisters of Battle at first because I felt like I was pushed towards them.  Everybody automatically assumes a girl player should have a girl army.  That’s partly why I have never had Eldar too.  Anyway, I did like the look of the models and when I got my first few as a gift, I was hooked. They were the best looking models GW had ever made at the time and they still hold up well for being all metal.  I love the gothic look.  Not goth!  Let’s get that straight.  Gothic.  They have a unique look even among other power armored troops.

Why do I play Adepta Sororitas?  I won’t lie, the rarity of the army is a big plus.  But it’s the martyrdom, too.  It’s that defiant “forget you” of a warrior with no chance of survival but willing to make the enemy pay for every drop of blood the shed.  Also, it may sound silly but I have developed an emotional attachment to the army over the years.  No other army speaks to me like that.

May favorite bit of fluff?  That’s hard to say.  Daemonifuge is probably my favorite but any story with Sisters of Battle as key participants is flawed in some way.  Some worse than others.  So I think my favorite bit of fluff is anything in the sidebars of the Sisters of Battle/Witch Hunter codices pre 5th Ed.  I like the little quotes like “Heretics crave the cleansing fire of absolution. They need not fear, for we shall deliver it to them.”

What makes them better is easy.  Gorgeous models with flame throwers.  It’s all about that femme fatale allure.

And I play The Order of Our Martyred Lady, of course.  I have them painted with black armor with gold trim, black corsets and red robes with cream linings. They all have white hair as is typical of the Order.

I play sisters because I like to play something different from most other people. It gets so boring being Marine player #61 at the LGS. I also like yelling out "The Emperor protects!" before rolling 3 sixes to save a tank or squad. I also really like the trope of kickazz women like a whole army of Sarah Connors so that's cool too.

I have to agree with the second siege of Terra as being an awesome moment for them. I am also partial to the purging of a certain multi coloured space marine chapter you don't see around anymore...msn-wink.gif

Sisters are better then the rest because they are the underdogs. We have cards stacked against us in unit selection and rule updates. Any army that lacks native AA, flyers, LOWs, formations and has only a single troop choice and yet can still be a force to reckon with is awesome. I also find people underestimate them and are unfamiliar with them as an army which can give me the tactical advantage. We make the stuff we have work. However, they have also been cheap in the regards that I don't really change my army over the editions. No codex creep for us means I save money not having to buy new units or finding out that certain units have been nerfed into useless.

I play the actual Daughters of the Emperor circa M36. I'm OG here folks lol.

...Why do you play Sisters?

Like many things in my life, I sort of stumbled into it. Many years ago I saw that 'Dex:Witchunters could, with the right WD articles, serve as a vehicle for fielding an army comprised of all the odd-bit models I'd accumulated over the years. A chance to deploy my Arbites to supervise all my various gang fighters and quasi-civilian figures. I even had a unit of the disabled and orphans to hold my home objective. It was a very flavourfully grim and dark force. Over time I gathered various other options in an effort to make it work better as the opportunities presented themselves. A couple of Missile tanks for AT support, some Seraphim for flanking actions, some arco-flagellants 'cause they're cool and so on. Eventually I'd rounded up enough girls that they could stand on their own.

What's your favorite bit of Sisters fluff?

I think I'll go with "I don't have time to die - I'm too busy!"

What makes Sisters a better army then all the rest to you?

Presently, because the barrier to duplicating it is high and thus it is a visually impressive feat on the field.

And what Order do you play?

Our Lady of Perpetual Ammunition.
