New to 30k, Starting Death Guard

Onehip

Recommended Posts

After years of talking myself out of 30k, I finally bit the bullet and ordered the books.

Don't even know if there are people in my area that play.

It is just more for my own personal display and love of the story line.

What would people recommend for a fluff/fun death guard army?

Obviously, lots of tactical, dreads, termies, vindicators...

Anything else?

Hoping to create a 2,000 point list eventually.

Any tips there?

thanks in advance!biggrin.png

deathshroud terminators and their other Legio specific unit(can't remeber it ATM). also Calas Typhon, and the Mortie himself.

on a side note, I would love to see a DG rapid stike assault force.

just imagine, the enemies huddled behind their defences. a fog rolls in. then, bare ceramite armoured ghosts burst from the mist. utterly silent, unstoppable, they smash into the defence line. slaughtering the foe with spectre-like ability. never uttering a word or battle-cry. the assault finished, the enemy spent, they disappear back into the mists. when the mists clears they are nowhere. where they there, or did the enemy kill each other in madness.

nobody is alive to know the truth.

Check out the death guard tactica down in the heresy tactics sub forum. Wolf_pack has an excellent guide and review of the death guard. Also if you aren't afraid to visit 1d4chan they have an excellent review on death guard and midst 30k units. Here's the link. http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Warhammer_40,000/Tactics/Space_Marine_Legion_List_%2830k%29

For death guard I would recommend a reaping force for your army. It seems that kinda playstyle would you suit you.

Also welcome to 30k!

Welcome to the forums, Onehip. To me, short of your ideas already, what says 'brute force and ignorance' more than a superheavy or two? Or perhaps we take a 'scroched earth' route and employ some Destroyers. :)

Flamers... Heavy flamers... Lots of them. I play Death Guard and while I started out doing a Pride of the Legion theme, I've since branched out to starting a Reaping themed force as well. The sheer force of Marines walking up the field, ignoring most terrain, implacably advancing... Really cool. You can also take Heavy Support and Veteran squads as noncompulsory Troops, meaning you'll have extra Heavy and Elite slots to throw out more fun.

Grave Wardens are pretty good in close range, so they require a Transport... which is actually not a problem, seeing as they (along with normal Terminators) can take Spartans as Dedicated Transports, which is also more or less a free Heavy slot as well.

Death Guard can take Rad Grenades on their Independent Characters when using their Rite of War, meaning your dropping any toughness left and right. Coupled with Destroyers, you can reduce normally tough as nails opponents to globs of jelly before assaulting.

Deathshroud are great bodyguard for your HQ. They may only have a 5++, but with 2 wounds they'll tank pretty hard and absorb impacts that would otherwise harm your HQ. They're no slouches in combat either, with Chem Flamers and Manreapers, they're great for cutting down infantry.

Mortarion himself is an absolute beast. Though he doesn't have the all out offense of Angron or Horus, he can take an insane amount of punishment and just keep going. His teleport ability comes in handy when catching the enemy off guard, and with Silence you'll pretty much take down anything in his way barring another Primarch or some IC.

Remember that before Mortarion came, the trademark tactic of the XIV Legion "Dusk Raiders" was rapid, overwhelming assault backed up by heavy firepower. While Mortarion changed the doctrine to something more akin to WWI trench warfare tactics later, you can always still incorporate a formation that remembers its roots.

I would recommend a heavy infantry force (a 20th century analogy would be the SS Panzergrenadiers). That means "true grit" tactical formations (each Legionary being kitted out with bolter, bolt pistol, CCW, and grenades), line-breaker units (Cataphractii Terminators and Contemptor Dreadnoughts), specialist teams (Destroyers and heavy support formations), with little to no vehicles (who needs them when you have things such as the Deredeo Dreadnought to provide heavy firepower?).

Good luck and make your choices wisely - the Death Guard has been graced with some very good-looking kits and upgrade parts.

Thank you everyone! Lots of good feedback.

That's what has drawn me to DG, their style of warfare.

Few more questions:

1.) Do you feel Breacher Siege Squads fit?

2.) Is FW going to make Crysos and/or Durak models?

Can't wait for the books to arrive and start fooling around with a 2k list.

Like I mentioned not so much competitive as fluff and flavor.

Do you feel there will ever be rules/model for Garro?

1) Totally.

2) Probably not. :(

Garro... I'd say it's likely. When though? I have no idea.

From what I've heard, only characters present in the Black Library books are being made into models.

Must've missed the Dynat model then? tongue.png

Surely you mean Alpharius? That guy has been in nearly every Heresy novel going twisty his moustache as those rotten kids ruin his plans.

Ahh yes, good catch. However, I think it has more to do with the fact that there's so few actual named Alpha Legion characters... although it did surprise me that there was no Pech or Ranko.

Yeah that probably is why. But yeah they did have a couple to pick from. Although I guess we only saw them as 'standard' AL guys, there wasn't much they could do rules wise to make them interesting.

Will we ever see a model for Garro? I'd say it's very possible, but much later.

There is an "Agents of the Emperor/Warmaster" category in 30K.

Those could be the Custodian Guard, the Silent Sisterhood, Assassins, or Knight Errants. 30K is already "splintering" - it began as a purely Legion affair, now look what we have.

With Book V covering the Battle of Calth, FW is still well within the first third of the Horus Heresy. The Black Library book series is already well into the middle years of the war. I think as FW gets closer to the climax at Terra, we'll see more and more non-Legion organizations.

Do you guys have any recommendations for HQ choices/builds?

Want to keep them loyalists.

Also, can you use 30k lists agains 40k lists?

Have noticed in the army lists threads people have mentioned things to handle Horde armies and Eldar....

Thought it was completely separate
