Raven's Love

Recommended Posts

Hi brothers... I'm wondering... why Storm Ravens are so hidden this days. Most of the army list includes just Terminators and NDKs, but rarely i see Ravens...

Why not take both?.

I was thinking in an army like this...

NSF

HQ : Librarian lvl3, Liber Dameonica ( I love this relic because of the rerroll on casting powers)

Troop : Terminator Squad, 1 Psycannon, 2 swords, 1 hammer, 1 halberd, justicar with falchions

Elite : Purifier Squad, 2 Incinerators, 2 swords, Justicar with falchions

Fast Attack : 2x Storm Raven, teleport homer,  weapons at your choice. personally like the multimelta and lasscannon to wreck some vehicles.

Heavy Support : 2x NDKs, personal teleporter, H.Psycannon, H. Incinerator

Fortification

Skyshield landing pad, with ready for take off upgrade

Storm Wing Formation

Storm raven with multi melta and assault cannon.

2x Storm Talons with assault cannon

edit : I forgott... this is 1850 pts.

Start the game with one raven on the Skyshield, maybe with a Plasma cannon to do some damage. change configuration to Shielded waiting for the second turn, then fly over and drop the embarked unit on enemy face without scatter.

What do you think about this.....

what weapons do you like for ravens?.

please comment.

Now I'm wondering... what would happen if i start the Stormwing Raven on the Skyshield?... where goes the Talons? what happen with them?.... shall be deployed close too? or just remain on reserve scorting another target?

even... as the talons are not destroyed... this raven have the straffin run special rule, so shooting plasma cannon would be -1 to the scatter distance with rerroll option...

I stopped playing my Stormraven when it stopped surviving arrival pretty much every game. It's such a let down that I never bothered to complete the two GK Stormtalons I had planned for a GK Stromwing.

You mean they mustered enough interceptor shots to kill it in your movement phase?!

It's not exactly hard.

A tau player I know had enough broadsides to take 2 down the same turn, each with 5 guys and a dreadnought...

Admittedly he rolled lucky 6s on both. But if he didn't he would have brought them down to 1 Hull point each. So if he focus fired on 1 raven then he would have had no problems, even withought luck b

Ravens are in a bit of a sticky spot at the moment;

Pros: They're AV12 on all facings, 3HP Flyers with amazing firepower, an Assault Ramp, 12-man capacity, and our only Skyfire platform besides Allies or Fortifications (slow clap for GW narrative). On paper, they look pretty essential. Purifiers love them, as they're everything the doctor ordered for a fragile PA unit that hits like a freight train if delivered correctly.

Cons: They're only AV12 and 3HP. Flyer defenses helps, but I'm seeing more and more AA tech in lists these days, and it's not geared towards 1-2 Flyers, it's geared towards the stupid 3+ Flying thing armies like Nids, IG Air Cav, Necrons, Eldar etc. It's also 200 points, which is a whole Terminator combat squad or DK.

I think they have a place. However, I feel like you need a plan for them. Ie, if you have Purifiers, then the Raven is a solid choice to pair up with them. But empty? I dunno.

In my meta, you eith take 3 or more flyers, or you don't take any. Either way, flyers are easy to ignore if you lack AA, and stupidly easy to kill if you take AA. The only army I've found that requires AA are Knights, and they just got access to pom-pom guns on every chassis. For my GK, I generally just ignore Flyers that can't be grounded, ground those that can, and call it a day.

If I take my Stormraven? That's 200+ points I flush down the toilet, because it's useless in reserve, and either dies the moment it enters play or gets ignored. In the end, I'd rather not waste the points.

3 Broadsides with 6 missiledrones without skyfire manage an average of 0,945 HP on a Raven when jinking. I realize you said he was lucky but even assuming he had like 4 of those units he would need his fair share of lucky dice to kill 2 jinking Ravens and at that point we are talking about nearly 1100 points with just missle pods and interceptor as support system.

Even if he manages to kill one or two Ravens (which you have to expect if he fields 3+ missleside units) there is still the fact that you can drop all you passengers safely due to Skies Of Fury.

The fact that you field two dreadnoughts is another concern if you are going for competitive. Perfectly fine for semi or casual of course.

Yeah I've been burned too by taking single Ravens. It's made me less inclined to field 2, or any at all. But I think they definitely do a lot of things we need, and they're not overpriced or bad by any means. It's a bit like Interceptors, there is nothing wrong with them, in fact they're pretty great. But Marine hate is already an issue for us, and making AP3 relevant against us doesn't help.

I generally see them with Vector Tracker these days. Also, if they're forcing you to Jink, they've already accomplished their goal of shutting down any shooting you planned to do with it. Another thing to consider is markerlights and the Support 'O. I see people either turn on 'Scour' and possibly boost the to-hit roll as well (depends on how many markers hit you), or put the Shas'O with the Broadsides to give them Ignore Cover and Tank Hunters by default. You generally don't see more than 2 Broadside units though. The third Heavy slot is often a Skyray these days, sometimes Longstrike if they wanna be classic.

Somewhat. You still scatter, and you can still Mishap, which is annoying. It's why it's generally preferable to take the locator beacon and not die, so you can land with no scatter.

Yeah it's really sad what happened to Dreads. They really didn't need nerfs, PsyDreads were already becoming a bit pricey and fragile due to 6th edition changes and other armies having their firepower upgraded. Losing psybolts, 'Fortitude' and getting a price increase were the final nails in the coffin. Even for casual games, they're quite lackluster now.
