ronin_cse
Hello all, Now that the Ad Mech releases are over and done with I will be able to start on my next project. I have already decided to start a 40k Ultra Marine army and I have always wanted to do a HH army so I figure I may as finally jump into 30k. So I have a couple questions of what I should work on (and I didn't notice a sticky covering this or anything, apologize if there is a thread for this already). Obviously I need to get Tempest at some point (or at least I really really want it) and I need the red Legion book. I am less sure about how to start building tac squads. I have 2 boxes of plastic tac marines from GW waiting to be assembled and I have been eyeing the new HH Ultramarine upgrade kits. It doesn't look like MKVII armor is THAT different from MKIV so I was wondering if I could get away with using the Ultramarine Invictarii and Praetorian kits with what I have, or if I should really get MKIV shoulders and/or legs as well. Obviously I know there aren't any hard rules and of course I can do what I want, but I want to do this right. I eventually want a HH army that I could take to a HH Open without feeling like I cut too many corners or something ;). Thanks! Hyperion
If you want to do it "right" then I would avoid all Mk7 armour. It's certainly a (slightly) cheaper way of building your army, but I suspect that you'll only go back and change them later! We're all a bit obsessional about detail, and those minor differences tend to catch the eye. As you say, you're completely free to do whatever you want - it's YOUR army - but it also sounds like you're just as hobby-OCD as the rest of us! Atia
if you want to do it *right* (and during the HH era), than you should try to avoid mk vii and viii =) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/307907-couple-questions-about-getting-started/#findComment-4051220 Share on other sites
Kol Saresk
Unless you're doing a Siege of Terra army, Sarum-pattern helms or the SoH variant. I think it started with a "g"? Those all use Mk VII Helmets. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/307907-couple-questions-about-getting-started/#findComment-4051230 Share on other sites

ronin_cse
Yeah that is what I figured, oh well. I guess I can just build up my Ultras that I have and use them as stand ins for local games until I replace them with real HH Marines . On that note, are there any GW kits that are fine in 30k? Did the current Rhino pattern exist back then? What about the flyers? Edit: Also do I want to keep all my Tac Squads in the same mark of armor, or is that kind of my choice? Kol Saresk
Rhinos yes. Flyers, not any sold by GW. Mark uniformity, that is up to your personal preference. Like predators, whirlwinds, razorbacks, etc...? I'm assuming Dreadnaughts and Land Raiders existed back then in their current form as well? Dreads and Land Raiders did but only the standard LR I believe, not the variants like the Crusader (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Razorbacks also didn't exist then either. No las predator Only the phobos/godhammer LR, no other variants iirc, besides the achilles and proteus. No storm raven, no storm talon No thunderfire cannon. Box dreads are ok in all variations; though there is no specific entry for Ironclads but, we have contemptors anyways which are infinitely better than Ironclads. No razorbacks. ronin_cse
Excellent! Thanks everyone! I haven't painted most of my vehicles yet since I got side tracked with other things so that actually gives me a decent base to build from, plus a have a vindicator laser destroyer on the way too. Now I just need to get Tempest so I can decide which Ultramarine units really appeal to me. Skalpynock
Indomitus-pattern Terminators (normal 40K ones) are perfectly fine, as long as you remove the Crux Terminator. infyrana
From your tactical box of plastic marines, you could remove the MkIV / V / VI parts from the box sets to create the odd HH marine, or mix those parts in with the HH specific stuff. This includes the studded shoulder pad, MkVI beaky helm, corvus legs and chest, MkV chest, and you could mix in a few of the choice bolters / weapons too. But you'd probably be served well if you removed many of the purity seals and most all of the skulls everywhere and avoid MkVII armour pieces. Reyner
You could use Thunderfire cannons as quad launcher rapiers? Just swap the techmarine for 2 regular marines with pistols.
