The Cadian 726th

Recommended Posts

So I'm brand new to 40k as of January and I immediately latched onto the Guard. Money and other junk has kept me from being able to properly buy and field an army of my own, so I borrow from friends to get my fix. I've accumulated a few kits now and am taking my PRECIOUS SWEET TIME learning how to paint them all. It doesn't help that I've chosen an overly complicated paint scheme for a bunch of dudes that fall over if you sneeze at them too hard.

So I've already got a good grasp on the homebrew company. A number designation for my daughters birthday, but no nickname yet. I used the Cadian models, but Cadians seem too...competent? Fluff-wise anyways. I work out them in my head as the company everyone dumps their morons/court-marshaled so the rest of the imperial guard can go on being all grimdark. I plan on having a huge swath of troops someday just so I can dump them in front of my opponent and say "Shoot for the high score, there are only so many turns".

Anyways, I'll be filling this out with updates as I paint more and flesh out the regiment's story. Here's a shot of my completed models. Yes I've technically been playing since January, but a couple months I was just watching tutorials in my free time.

Scheme is a very cheery "Shoot Me" Blue and Orange with some gloss varnish for extra visibility. The remainder of the armor is a steel gray. The orange is asymmetrical; being on the left breast plate but not the right. Left shoulder pad will denote squad number and veteran status (numerals for squads, skulls for vets). Right shoulder will denote rank and special rules. The grenade launchers will be lime green, flamers yellow, heavy flamers red, plasma blue (sort of pictured), meltas purple, snipers dark blue, sergeants are bronze, platoon commander is gold, company commander is gold on both shoulders, vox casters are black, medics are white/red, standard bearers and heavy weapon crews will probably get their own color as well.

The only thing I have left for these guys is a more dynamic (and fixed) base. I want to try my hand and doing beach sand and waves. Also if could figure out how to put names on the lip of the base..

I'd like some input from ya'll. Any generic advice for improving my painting would be nice. Suggestions for how to make the sand flock currently on the base more beach-like (any suggestions to make the base more beach-like, really). I also am unsure as to a few of my color choices. The black lasgun casing was a "least worst" situation where every other color I tried was ugly. Black works I guess, but I'm wondering if I maybe missed another color that works with the brass parts and overall color scheme. same goes for the helmets but I'm much more content with that color (mostly just curious if there was a better suggestion). On their backs are the provided grenades (drab green) and pouches (white). While I don't think they look bad, I'm worried it's too many colors on one model.

Official Fluff:

The Cadian 726 is a disposal regiment for the Astra Militarum forces on Cadia. Not will to waste time with court-marshlling and executing the sheer number of troops that do not uphold the Cadian military standard, disposal regiments are filled with soldiers found unfit for duty. Despite being seen as a literal 'dead end' the 726th prides itself on being the outcasts of the Cadian military, and attempt to squeeze what little joy they can out of life before succumbing to enemy or commisarial fire.

Offical Motto: What's the worse that could happen?

Official Officer Motto: Can't kill us all!

Officers are given execution priviledges usually only granted to commisars. Both officers and Commisars are nicknamed 'Sanitors' and tend to also be men that have embarassed themselves or the Cadian military in some way.

House Rules:

These aren't actually rules that I would actually play, but something purely 'fluffy' to represent the Regiment

1. Waste of Resources - The Cadian 726th cannot field vehicles that do not have a transport capacity.

2. Trigger Happy Brass - Commisars only cost 15 pts. Platoon and Company Commanders can use Summary Execution on any friendly unit from codex Astra Militarum within their command range

3. "Clog their gears with your bodies!" at the end of any assault phase where a unit from codex Astra Militarum received or dealt wounds, you may remove 5 models from the affected unit and deal one unsaved wound to the enemy attacker. (not good with the verbage on this).

Future Projects:

Demolition Veterans with a rocket launcher and three grenade launchers. I want to try hazard stripe helmets.

Buying and painting all the unique character from the codex and renaming and refluffing them as new people (honestly, why would Creed be anywhere near these guys)

Creed - Lord Sanitor Grumple Fudd (Purchased)

Kell - Standard Bearer Florence "Barky" McBane

Straken - Jimmy "The Fist" Kryzmnsky (Purchased)

Nork Deddog - Donk Gudbodygard

Pask (sadly no pask with house rules above) - Tank Commander Salvager Bucky "Bang Bang" Juree

Commissar Yarrick - *it's a secret that I think will make you laugh*

Harker - no one uses Harker. Harker is useless. Not even the 726th wants him...Sergeant Blain Rex (IF I can make him look like Jesse Ventura)

Love it. The idea alone is pretty damn fun and would make for an awesome action comedy movie. The colour scheme is refreshing. Orange is seen so damn rarely these days (unless you are hanging over at AdMech like me, looks like quite a few are on the Ryza trip right now :D). You should totally do kill counts as well. Just one dot or stripe for each kill. Would add loads of charactirization.

Anyway, looks like a projects with much potential. Make sure to write some stories about them as well ;)

Welcome Kaiser, senpai has noticed you :P Your scheme is a little complicated yes, but it works well and you've done a good job on them. What more models do you have to paint up? Do you have a particular theme in mind or will you just get the models you like? Looking forward to seeing your progress :)

I just like that you went with double heavy bolters on the chimera. Few go that way (I didn't) but it creates a nice look imo.

The turret weapon is magnetized. I would have put the multilaser on there for the picture but the little plate that the multilaser and flamer share is missing.

I would have gone simpler but I watched a lot of battle reports beforehand and was frustrated that I couldn't tell the standard troopers apart from the non-standard ones. I figured if I ever decided to record my games, viewers would be able to tell what models were special and maybe why.

I still have some figs from a command squad, another box of shock troopers, and a leman russ needing assembly and paint. While I want to collect so I can field well rounded lists, my end goal is to be able to play approximately ALL the troops. I have ideas for an armor-heavy all female regiment, but that will get started a long time from now.

Well done Kaiser, HWSs are a deceptive amount of work for 3 models as you're painting far more than normal for them. The 726 are going to need a lot more troops though ;)

Thank you.

I'm actually really glad I lost the third power supply for the last lascannon. The asymmetry it adds to the squad is nice. Since I have one team running around without power, I decided to go full derp and have the spotter wielding his binoculars backwards.

I know full well how much it's going to take to build this army. I haven't contributed much since I worked on a tank squad for the ETL (my armored force is a completely different homebrew regiment) and I've been helping my wife get into malifaux. ON TOP OF THAT I got the Blood Angels codex. While I primarily plan to field guard, the BA fills in a lot of their weaknesses and their units are worth a lot more. I'll be taking them as allies until I fill out my regiment so I need to also work on my successor chapter.

sometimes we forget that this is all sci-fi and futuristic. We tend to be conservative with our paint schemes, but this, this is great! I wanted to have the courage to do something like this, but I still played it safe. Vivid colours go well with Sci-fi.

Well done!

The good captain beat me to the punch with that post. Be bold be brave, you've pulled it off. Who needs drab or camo, great work.

Fun time

Trooper Ross Lorox is famous amongst the Cadian 726th for coining the phrase (now regimental motto) "What's the worst that could happen?" before discovering the first recorded pit of quicksand on Cadia.

Posthumously court-marshalled for going AWOL.

So attempting to do hazard stripes on a sphere with protrusions like the Cadian helmet is frickin impossible. The demo vets are coming along nicely but the plan is to now do hazard stripes on the left shoulder pad (and thus, all doctrine vets having that shoulder recolored) and the protrusions on the helmet being yellow with the helmet itself being black.

Woo! Demolition Vets

gallery_85478_10883_670102.jpg

That's a big ball of color. As mentioned before ever color has a reason behind it, and doing these vets decided how I'd do the other doctrines. Doctrine vets will be the only units WITHOUT the left orange shoulder pad (in this case, hazard stripes that I wanted so much). The helmets will also be of a different color. The right shoulder pad still follows the normal color scheme. Skulls on the right shoulder pad indicate a Veteran rank.
