The Fallen are Rising!

Recommended Posts

Back in the dim and distant past I had a WIP thread for my Fallen, but since I last posted in it back in 2010, I figured it'd be easier to start another.

Recently I got back into expanding my Army, and while I don't generally bother with WIP posts, I'm pretty excited by the latest addition, so couldn't wait till I got it painted.

For those who aren't as long in the tooth as me, this is my version of "The Angel of Blades". It's a Fallen dreadnought from an old story called "Unforgiven" by Graham MacNeill. A 4-legged, spikey, bladed, heavy bolter wielding, dreadnought with bladed wings. It was portrayed as being something like this...

(Mods please remove if this in any way violates GWIP or board rules)

I've taken the liberty of changing the Angel's heavy bolter from the fluff for a Lascannon, but otherwise I'm pretty pleased with how it came out.

I also have a Cypher on the go. I love the versions based on Seraphicus, but until I get the where-with-all to pick up a spare model, I'm basing mine on the standard DA tactical squad Member.

As you can see, I used a stamp of the original Cypher chest, but added additional GS work to fix the folds of the robe to fit the new model.

I'm going to hold off putting any paint on the Angel of Blades for a couple of days (well, I'm gonna try to at least - as I say, I'm pretty excited to get him finished) to try to get some feedback. If anyone has any comments or suggestions as to how to improve him - either in general, or specific to the original fluff - I'd appreciate any input available.

Thanks for looking, and as always, comments and criticism are welcome.

Cheers,

Widowmaker

Thanks guys. I appreciate the comments.

Cypher is waiting for a mail order delivery, but I have high hopes.

As for the Angel... so it begins.

Needless to say, I didn't wait long.

Hah! Thanks Heinrich! Think that must mean it's on the right track. In also glad I'm not the only one old enough to remember the Angel of Blades!

So, it's taking a little longer to get finished than I planned, but I have an update...

So personal criticism...

1) He seems a little blue to my eyes - and not just because he's taking so long to finish (sorry, couldn't resist)...

2) I'm not 100% happy with the free hand on the Lascannon arm. The skull is ok, but out of place on the checks, and the half Chaos symbol kind of gets list I think. I'm thinking of scrapping it, but not sure what kind of heraldry to put in its place. Any suggestions?

3) The flesh might be a little dark, but I'm OK with that - gonna pass it off as the dread being very, very old.

As always, comments and criticism are welcome,

Cheers,

i think it is a great start! Don'e be too hard on yourself.

It is hard to make a deep red look "sharp" against a black background, so I think that is what is contributing to you feeling the 1/2 Chaos symbol is getting lost. I think the checks stand out well in spite of it, but the arrows do get lost, I agree.

I would either do all checks, or leave the other half plain black to create more contrast.

If it were me, I would also carefully edge the blue metal with silver, using the littlest paint possible (almost dry-brush level) and the side of the tip on a pointed brush. That will also create contrast, and make the edges look more sharp/defined.

Thanks geektom. Some great comments.

I totally agree with your comment about painting red on black... it can be a real pain. I think though, that the Chaos icon was getting lost more because 1) due to the placement of the skull the top arrow was squashed at the top of the pad and 2) the vertical got lost in the checks. If the checks were (for sake of example) green and yellow, I could have moved the vertical lines right into the side of the check pattern without losing definition. As it is, even with the gap it blends in and gets lost. One of the problems I have is that it's an annoying space to work in - the pads aren't symmetrical vertically or horizontally so my initial idea was hard to fit in.

I also agree that another very fine highlight might make a lot of difference. See below.

I've made some changes to the shoulder. The Chaos arrows are gone, and the are more checks... sort of. I think the new direction is better. Time will tell.

I've also made changes to the blue... I tried to reduce the blue feel of the model, perhaps weirdly, by adding more blue. Old school Shadow Grey to the rescue. Fingers crossed it works.

I'll post more pics when I'm further along.

Hey guys, thanks for the comments.

Yes. They are the legs from the Dunecrawler. It also uses the turret support rings, because without them the helbrute waist is too narrow to fit.

Glad you like it. It's been fun to work on. Hopefully it'll be out of paint and into the Hall of Honour soon.

As always, any comments and criticism are welcome.
