GK allies

Recommended Posts

So, I've decided to use Grey Knights (using my SW as runic guard) as allies for my Imperial Guard. It's one of the few ideas I've been toying with. I play stormtroopers and vets, and they could benefit from a little psyker support, and a bit of melee tankiness.

to that end I was thinking of

a ML3 libby with stormbolter and stave

an 8 man squad of termies, swords and stormbolters, and one psycannon.

this comes to about 450 ish points

I took the nemesis strike force for this to get the rites of teleportation benefit. Potentially I can bring them in first turn stick them right where I want them near an enemy unit I want to tie up, use some psychic power on them, shoot them, and then run closer for a turn 2 assault, after charging the force weapons, and hammerhanding it up.

I was thinking of using them as a shield for my Stormtroopers, taking some of the heat off of them and putting a nasty unit up front.

Does this sound viable?

It does until you find out on turn 1 (if you go first and they arrive) or turn 2 that those terminators are the target for most of the enemies units and you need to make a ton of 5+ invun saves because they are using AP 1 and 2 weapons against you and have no other targets near them.

That sounds almost exactly like his plan for them, so I guess that's good then!

Yeah sounds good Ulrik. However, if you really want to make your opponent brick themselves and ignore your Stormtroopers entirely, take a DK instead (drop the Termies down to 5-man and the Libby down to ML2). It's fast, it has way better firepower and melee threat, and it's a lot tougher.

That does sound good, unfortunately I have neither a dreadknight, or anything resembling a dreadknight, and I don't believe proxying a dreadnought for one really works, they don't even look remotely the same, in armaments or size, though I am using wolf guard terminator models instead of grey knight terminators, because I'm just using the rules for my Runic Guard (My great Company got lost in the warp for a bit, and some got really shaggy and werewolfy, others gained the ability to shoot mind bullets). I suppose an Assault cannon could stand in for the heavy psycannon, and just have the dual powerfist option. Dreadnoughts are fluffy for wolves even if they're not for GK. I guess that'll do until I can actually get the appropriate grey knight models.

That'd make an excellent tank, and it would give me an extra psyker on the board, and it can deep strike. First I think I'll try having two units of 5 termies with psycannons first and see how grey knights work out for me, then I'll see about scaling up.

Any more advice would bee most welcome.

You proposed tactic is actually a pretty good use of your GK, if you deploy them right. I would not use them as a suicide bomb, but as a deployable fire base for stealing a distant objective, an holding it. This creates a problem your opponent must address, which in turn takes pressure off your main force. The issue you need to deal with is how you use that reduced pressure.

If you play passively, you just wasted 450pts. If you push to fill the vacuum left by your opponent taking pressure off your main army, you can break them into smaller, easier to munch parts. So, if you are going to drop the GK behind enemy lines, use them as an anvil to your Guard's hammer. Or use them as a hammer to your Guard's anvil.

If I double up on 5 man termie squads, and libbies, It's 600 points, which is fine, it gives me 4 psykers on the table, and 2 objectives I can take and hold because they're tank like with their saves. While taking all of the fancy toys would be cool, and I might get to that point, at this point I'm just looking to add a little something to my primary force, namely a shield to do melee and soak up all of that nasty fire while my stormtroopers can do work.

I tend to play very aggressively, so putting the termies up front while my Stormtroopers flank unopposed is what I'm looking for.

I have so many other armies that I want to work on, that GK are pretty far down my list. I've got a Ravenwing army I want to build up a bit, I've got an Eldar jetbike army I want to start, I have Tau I want to expand, and I have a Guard Armored Column I want to build, as well as doing some expansion on my Guard as they stand now.

Lots on my plate and no funds.
