Who should be the Warlord?

So something I've been mulling over for the last week or so.

I played a game last weekend with a fairly straight forward Grey Knight NSF list; libby, termies, dread knights, purifiers in a raven.

I'd been in two minds about who to make the warlord, and in the end decided with the librarian. Long story cut short, the libby killed himself on a perils, giving away slay the warlord (Doh!).

Up until that point my thinking about who to make the Warlord was about which traits would best benefit him or the army (luck gods allowing).

However, I'm now looking at the Warlord selection with a different criteria; which model is best suited to survive, and hence not give away Slay the Warlord.

How do you approach Warlord selection? What criteria do you use?

There is some truth in making one of your NDKs your Warlord, although I'm generally against it as my NDKs are huge targets that should be shot at, while my Libby is much smaller and attached to a bigger wound pool. That said, I can empathize with the problem. However, I still feel strongly that the Libby gains the most from being Warlord while retaining the highest survivability.

DK's are on paper hilarious Warlords, but as Jeff points out, they're already huge bullet magnets and usually die anyway. Librarians are still a target, but they're easier to hide if you have to, and giving up Slay the Warlord too easily can cost you games.

Personally, I shell out for a Grand Master in larger games. He's not only got the support of a Librarian, he's also a melee monster who shoots quite well with his Relentless psycannon. Pricey (around DK cost depending on upgrades), but if you stick Cuirass on him he's quite difficult to murder (especially if you're pawning S8+ wounds onto his bodyguard using Look Out Sir!).

All good thoughts.

A second HQ is an interesting approach, and I do have a few other HQ models (including a psycannon toting GM).

I agree that price is an issue. I tend to play my GKs at around 1750 points, and tying up a further 200ish points in HQ doesn't sit comfortably with me.

There is nothing wrong with taking 2x Librarians over a single Grand Master. It's more a fluff thing for me, because one of the key aspects of our League campaign is that we have an Avatar (ie a single hero that represents you on the battlefield). In my case, I'm taking Vardan Kai, Grandmaster of the 1st. He's making his debut at Round 3, which is 1500 points. I think below that, Librarians are just more cost-effective for your HQ slot.
