TheHaplessHeretic
Hey I'm not a huge fan of the official tech-priest dominus and have been wanting to convert one for a while to fit with my 30k Mechanium AND my 40k Mechanicus. Now the Mechanicum model from forgeworld is on a 40mm base and the new cult-mechanicus model comes with a 50mm base. So will I have to use the 50mm base if I want to use it for both armies or do you think I can get away with using the 40mm base? Thanks :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308060-tech-priest-dominus-help/ Share on other sites
CommodusXIII
It's always best to use the correct base if possible. You might not get much grief during friendly games, but you will probably get some pushback for anything competitive. Bryan Blaire
If you aren't using an official model, you can't use an official base, can you? If someone really wants to be uptight about it, bring or ask them for a set of card stock circles of the appropriate sizes (25 mm, 40 mm, 50 mm, 60 mm, the funny ovals, etc) and play with those to measure. CommodusXIII
Base size is factored into the balancing (stop laughing) of the model. Alter the base size and you alter how that model plays. Counting one model as another is all fine and good, but changing base sizes could be seen as modeling for advantage - something that's not particularly looked upon favorably in the competitive environment. Friendly games are a different matter. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308060-tech-priest-dominus-help/#findComment-4055865 Share on other sites
Bryan Blaire
So will I have to use the 50mm base if I want to use it for both armies or do you think I can get away with using the 40mm base? ToxicVex, there is no hard and fast rule on bases for 40K. There is a single text box about an assumption for bases. As I said: If someone really wants to be uptight about it, bring or ask them for a set of card stock circles of the appropriate sizes (25 mm, 40 mm, 50 mm, 60 mm, the funny ovals, etc) and play with those to measure. If you base your conversion/scratch built model on a smaller base, simply bring a larger card stock cut out in the 50mm size, and if someone gets uptight, place that card piece under your base and have them use that for measuring. And seriously consider abandoning that game or never playing that person again, because chances are they aren't worth it as a gaming bud. Base size is factored into the balancing (stop laughing) of the model. Alter the base size and you alter how that model plays. Counting one model as another is all fine and good, but changing base sizes could be seen as modeling for advantage - something that's not particularly looked upon favorably in the competitive environment. Friendly games are a different matter.Again, if you don't have an official model, you don't have an official base. The rules specifically state nothing in regards to basing, there is a single text box that isn't a rule that states that it is assumed that models are based with the bases they come with. One could consider it modeling for advantage for a LOT of things, including not using official models. If they really want to be uptight about it in a competitive environment, they could always just forfeit a match to you if they don't want to play, especially in a tournament. That's like trying to be uptight about an unofficial "rule" like WYSIWYG, something that isn't in the rules for 7th Edition. Let's face it, base size is no longer a rule in 40K. TheHaplessHeretic
Thanks guys. I think I'm just going to go for the 40mm because I don't plan on playing in tournaments. An if I do I'm sure a 3rd party can provide a plastic or mdf ring to fit around the base, just for the super precious players. Argun
Well... why not model the 40mm base on top of the 50mm one? Make it like the Primarch/Character series that Forgeworld is doing, and use bigger one as a diorama of sorts for the smaller one to socket into? Doghouse
I think you just need to consider how you will be using the model. Is it for friendly or tournament games? I think your opponent would have to be a bit mental to refuse to play you for that in friendly games. I have a similar problem with the new 32mm bases, can't find anything official on what you can use them on as they are available separately. Worst comes to worst and if it proves to be a major problem just stick magnets on the base and the bottom of the miniature.
