I have an extra Imperial Knight chassis and after watching Mad Max, I though I'd build a Mad Max'esq / Fallout'esq post apocalyptic piloted robot. Something that could have come from an alternate Earth / Terra circa 1980s. Not for table top but just for my own collection.

I'd like ideas on how to build it up.

Some thoughts I have are to build a platform on top of the main carapace that would be some sort of "living area" that the pilot could use when not directly piloting the Knight. Something like an Imperator Titan but much smaller scale. Probably based on the rear platform of the IG Basilisk with some sort of overhead cover and sleeping area.

I'll probably arm the Knight with Stubbers, the AA AC and a Fist as even in a post apocalyptic world, small arms ammo will probably be available and the latter needs no ammo. I'm going to assume the Knight is otherwise nuclear powered. I'll also probably kit bash a slab of metal as a physical shield.

I probably won't have the Battle Cannon as shells for it probably won't be available. I'm undecided about the Thermal Cannon. "Gas" may or may not be scarce. Other thoughts I've been entertaining are some sort of captive bolt Lance.

I'll also kit bash some dozen blades on the Knight's ankles so he can "kick".

What else can I add to it?

Also, if I have barrels and jerry cans for water, where should I mount them?

And, without a proper docking bay, how would I get the pilot back to the carapace hatch from ground level? Rope ladder? Remote control of the Knight's fist?

Am open to any and all ideas - whether weapons, functions, embellishments, survival kit, doodads, etc.

Hope it's ok that I ask this here even though my Knight won't technically be part of the 40K Universe.

Thanks all!

Edit - consolidating ideas from others:

PA system

Small flamethrower

Wire / chains

Small arms access / combat shotgun

Torches

Lookout

Harpoon or Laser?

Supercharger

This is a really cool idea!

Is having a guy on the top platform with the flamethrower guitar thing taking it too far?

Could be the flamer that would have been under the Gatling Cannon if you used that - solid shots seem to be the weapon of choice for that theme.

*Coukd use a classic noise marine for the guy as it kind of looks like the main bad guy from mad max and is the only model that would require almost no converting.

I'd add some barbed wire along its greaves. Nothing says "deterrent" like barbed wire! Also, instead of a cannon for its arm, have you considered just mounting a lance in the barrel? If gas is scarce in the future wasteland (and let's assume it is because duh), you won't be able to shoot a melta at all. Or, and this could be neat, make it into a scrap launcher! It would be a last-ditch weapon but it would be an awesome one!

I'm not all that keen on a living area up top. Personally, it doesn't work in my head. A guy in a Knight would seem to really love it and sleep in it even, his legs poking out from under a propped-open hatch. On how to get down: rope ladder all the way.

If the Knight had a fist, it could easily wield a shield. That seems like a nifty idea, to me. Maybe a buckler strapped to its arm so it could still utilize its fingers. Lots of leather straps, too.

Small flamethrower is an idea.

Probably won't have guitar guy (even though I love Doof Warrior!) as I'm probably going to keep it this particular kit more practical.

But I'll probably have a PA system.

I'm trying to think of what else said pilot would rig up to make it more survivable given scarce post apocalyptic resources.

Very 'Mad' idea. Makes me think of doing a Freeblade Knight with this concept in mind.

I like the living area idea. Maybe not on the very top, but perhaps it can be glimpsed through the back, above the main engine and between the venting pipes. Perhaps screened in by some metal mesh, through some armour damage in the rear upper back.

Other decorations: torches, chained enemies, maybe a young feral kid acting as a lookout (thinking empire-like telescope)

Can't wait to see what you come up with.

I saw this on Ebay, it has been sold now, and I can't find the creator anywhere, but I think the chains look awesome, as well as the slightly stripped down armour

I think, first, you must know what sort of overall theme the model will take. After hearing your ideas Kilofix, and Apostle of the 30th Host's, I think you should do a Doof Warrior of your own, complete with a 'crown' for the knight (resting over the whole upper carapace and shoulders) made of speakers and amps.

Only have one, small, suggestion, but after watching the original Mad Max yesterday, I feel it's a detail that needs to be added. There should be a rack for a combat shotgun somewhere on the model, either next to the salvation hatch, or in the 'living area', if you do it. After all, it is Max Rockatansky's weapon of choice!

Yup, I'd keep a sawn-off shotgun in the cockpit to repel boarders. Rope ladder for access and supplies lashed to the top of the carapace. As an alternative to the battle cannon what about a large harpoon? It's very Mad Max and stops those faster vehicles from escaping.

you know, i haven't seen the new mad max yet but i did grow up with the originals (being Aussie and all :tongue.: ) and all the suggestions above sound very mad max'y !

the harpoon instead of the cannon was my thought too  . and i agree a basilisk platform stuck on the back with a corrugated iron roof would be perfect with barbed wire and spikes to stop people infiltrating the upper level. a shotgun hidden somewhere is a must even down on the legs hidden behind something as an emergency backup piece if he's caught away from the knight....if you are a fan of the original you may want to either do the knight in black :cool.:  or have the word "Interceptor" stenciled somewhere on it .

good luck with the Mad Knight

Cheers, Mithril

Just to go to the other extreme and to the fallout type robot, if the reactor is nuclear how about converting the battlecannon into a laser based weapon? Like how the US navy is using nuclear reactors to power their weapons but on a larger scale, kind of like liberty prime from fallout 3
