Which Leman Russ fits Catachan theme the best?

I will be asembling a Leman Russ soon and I want it to harmonize well with my Catachans.

I thought about a sponsonless version for a slimmer profile more suitable for moving through jungle and perhaps an exterminator pattern turret for the same reason (plus high rate of fire autocannons seem more catachanish than iowa class 21453245mm cannon), although I`d prefer Vanguisher much more gameplay-wise.

I will appreciate any suggestions! :)

Since the Catachans are US vietnam commando themed, I'd say stick with the old standby Battletank. It's the most like the M60 Patton that we used for decades after. But I'm a huge fan of the battletank since it's the most versatile.

I would second both of the options already presented. The LRBT feels very 1960s Vietnam-era, and the Punisher seems like it would be a good jungle-tank. If you wanted to get REAL fluffy with it, you could throw a hull Heavy Flamer on the Punisher.

I hoped someone would vote for the exterminator tongue.png When talking 'standby Battletank' you mean standard Leman Russ with default Battle Cannon? Wouldn`t that make vanquisher viable too just more formidable looking cannon?

Don`t know why, but I dont like the look of punisher turret, maybe it`s just me, but looks toyish...

All Russes fit the Catachan theme - there is no fluff that justifies limiting your Catachans. If you were to say what variants they might like best then probably the biggest, meanest and cover ignoriest (that's a word, don't question the commissariat) ones! :P Eradicators and Demolishers would work well in the jungle, but the Punisher spewing bullet death is definitely something you can see the Catachan enjoying!

They may be jungle fighters but that doesn't mean they'll only be fighting in the trees. They can and will fight wherever they must so don't let anything limit you :)

The Battle Tank and Vanquisher have different cannons. The Battle Cannon seems to be the more flexible of the two except with the Vanquisher I believe you can fire all sponsons and the Vanquisher Battle Cannon, not just the cannon or sponsons like the Leman Russ Battle Tank. I say the Battle Cannon is more flexible because it has an area blast where the Vanquisher Battle Cannon does not.

Yeah the Vanquisher loses ordinance, so It can fire all of its sponsons, but really what sponsons add to the vanquisher's capability? Multimeltas? You need to close to 12 inches to use them effectively, and the vanquisher excels at killing armor from range.

True. I was just covering all the bases.

now if only you could get lascannon sponsons, and multi melta/PC hull weapons! ;)

for my the eradicator seems like an excellent tank for catachan, think of it, these guys will preferebly be fighting in dense terrain, where the ignores cover vastely outmatches the battlecannonshot. yes, it's a lower S and AP, but typically speaking heavy infantry will be catious to enter the jungle anyway due to issues such as manouverability, becoming trapped, sinking away...

I personally love the idea of a camo'd up Vanquisher hiding in a forest picking off tanks. An Eradicator would make great sense functionally, a Punisher would just be fun and the Battle Tank is nice and versatile. Can't argue with the idea of a Demolisher clearing swathes of forests either!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions!

I think I made a decision, and 99% it`s gonna be a sponsonless vanquisher with lascannon and maybe a hunter killer missile.

The (probably) most powerfull anti-tank weapon in the game is just too tempting, looks cool and my army desperately needs at least one true tank destroyer (my HWSs will be dominated by mortars and lower that S8 weapons and other vehicles being sentinels and a hellhound).

I would go with the eradicator...short range  isn't an issue because you can still shoot much farther than you can see.  On the other hand, a cover-denying cannon in an environment where everyone has at least a 5++ all the time?  Pretty appropriate!  And of course it needs a hull heavy flamer.

I wouldn't give catachans ANY leman russ variant, though.  All three versions of the hellhound seem so much more appropriate.  Narrower than a russ, lighter, and the weapons options are spot-on fluffy!
