Ultra Marine paint schemes - help a brother out.

Welcome to the Ultramarines first of all!

Here is a picture of the scheme I currently use in action.

Ultramarine w/ FW parts

To get this I do the following:

Blue

Macragge Blue base coat

Drakenhof Nightshade wash thinned 50/50 with Lahmian Medium

Macragge Blue everywhere but the recesses

Overbrush of Altdorf Guard Blue on the raised panels and edges (I used 1 coat. Use more coats if you want a lighter blue, or none if you want it darker)

A very, very, very light glaze of Guilliman Blue. I find it best not to thin this down, just be very light and use barely any of it. One coat is more than enough.

An edge highlight of thinned Calgar blue (you can highlight before the glaze if you want the edges slightly less harsh)

You can then do a further highlight of Fenrisian Grey. Very fine on the sharpest edges. I don't do this as I find it takes too long on top of everything else. But I will when I tackle Guilliman.

Gold

I use FW's method that they use on their gold

Base of Balthasar Gold

1 coat of Hashut Copper

1 coat of Auric Armour gold

Edge Highlight of 50/50 Auric Armour to Runefang Steel

Agrax Earthshade Wash

Fine highlight of Runefang Steel on the sharpest edges.

On a related note: have anybody here tried out the Vallejo Game Air "Ultramarine Blue" primer? Because my thinking is, if it gives a nice blue to work from (shades, layers, highlights depending on how much work you want to put in) it should be a no-brainer.

Personally, I've had a lot of trouble finding a blue I'm happy with (to the point that I'v abandoned two Ultramarine army projects) and I suspect starting off with a blue undercoat might be a big help in this regard.

I am also interested in what colors you all use to paint your minis. I'm looking for a brighter, more cartoonish pallet for my army.

Dom_, very helpful!! Thanks for posting your scheme color by color!!

These are still WIP, but they're a good example of how I paint my 2nd Company
-prime them with Vallejo Surface Primer Grey with a tiny bit of black and satin varnish added to the mix(airbrush)
-basecoat with Vallejo Model Color Ultramarine(airbrush)
-wash recesses with Nuln Oil and tidy up any mistakes with VMC Ultramarine
-first blue highlight with Calgar Blue and second highlight with Etherium Blue in select few places

-metal parts are painted straight over the blue basecoat with VMC Gun Metal Grey, washed with Nuln Oil and highlighted with VMC Natural Steel

-yellow shoulder pad trims are undercoated with VGC Khaki and then painted over with VMC Flat Yellow and will be highlighted with VMC Lemon Yellow

-chest aquilas are undercoated with white primer, basecoated with an ancient hexagonal pot of Fiery Orange and then highlighted with VMC Flat Yellow

-gun casings are undercoated with Mephiston Red, washed with diluted Agrax Earthshade and Carroburg Crimson mixture and highlighted with Evil Sunz Scarlet(not yet ready in the picture)

I use the Vallejo Blue Primer, and I think it works great. Since the main color for my army is Kantor Blue, using the blue primer lets me use fewer coats to get great coverage. It saves me paint, and keeps details super crisp when doing multiple thing coats (or two passes with my airbrush).

Cool, thanks! I'll be trying that out then :)

Good thread, and some awesome paint jobs! :)

Here are some of my dudes (please excuse unfinished banner):

For the Blue:

1. Black Undercoat

2. Basecoat of 50:50 black and Vallejo Imperial Blue

3. Imperial Blue on all exposed plates

4. 1st Highlight - 50:50 Imperial Blue and Vallejo Ultramarine Blue

5. 2nd Highlight - Ultramarine Blue

6. 3rd Highlight - 50:50 Ultramarine Blue and Vallejo Wolf Grey

For the Gold I'm still using old-school Scorched Brown, Shining Gold and Mithril Silver. Am rapidly running out though, so might give some of the ideas above a go!
