Torsion Cannon wounding on squads

I'm pretty new to the game and am building Ad Mech as my first army, so I need a little rules clarification here:

- I hit a unit of 1 wound models

- the model I hit fails whatever saves it may have

- I roll a 2 or 3 on the wounds for the torsion cannon

 

question: Do the wounds only get applied to the model I hit (and the surplus wounds are thus lost) or do the surplus wounds get applied to other models in the unit?

Sadly, it says "when a model", meaning that the wounds are effectively lost against single wound units.

 

GK Paladins for example, would suffer from the weapon, as they could take up to D3 Wounds and have to pass thier Invuln or get Instant Deathed.

Looks like they are bringing back rules from 2:nd edition. Weapons in the past did different amount of wound on the models. Assault cannons were outright dangerous back in the days.
