Onehip
Now that I have the books been reading a lot and getting excited towards building an army (though still deciding which one) I need help though... During the Horus Heresy the Salamanders still would have had Terra born marines. Thought about having an assault squad, know it's not "fluffy" but can have hand flamers and such. Figured the Terra born guys would have been trained and used jump packs. My question is, would Terra marines of the XVIII have dark skin like Vulkan or Pale skin like the Emperor? Painting question, since sergeants don't seem to wear helmets in this future... Skalpynock
The Terrans had black skin and red eyes as part of the Geneseed, but if I remember correctly the Nocturnians were darker (or maybe was it lighter?). Painting question, since sergeants don't seem to wear helmets in this future... Can go either way. Supposedly the hardened, darkened skin genetic trait inherited from Vulkan was expressed in a lot of the Terran Legionaries upon finding their Primarch on Nocturne, upon being exposed to the intense heat there. And a lot more "activated" it through the use of flamer weaponry in close quarters. It's kind of a high-heat response. So it comes down to how you want to paint them for the most part. You can dream up any of a number of reasons they might not be expressing the Vulkan-ization. The hand-flamers aren't intense enough, their geneseed isn't expressing the same way, they haven't been using flame weapons long enough as they're relatively new aspirants, they were Terran honor guard that stayed on the ships while the rest of the Legion descended to Nocturne, etc etc Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308300-fluff-junkies-need-your-opinion/#findComment-4060833 Share on other sites
Kol Saresk
According to Massacre, the darkening of the skin was a result of the Salamanders basically having permanent tans. All Space Marines have an organ which adjusts their skin shade to act as natural radiation assistance. But whereas the Raven Guard and Night Lords mutated to be permanently pale, the Salamanders are instead, increase in darkness as the function that allows it to return to its normal color is what mutated for the XVIII. In other words, pre-Vulkan they would have had a multitude of skin tones not just because of ethnicity but also based on how much radiation they had been exposed to. The kicker is that when Vulkan was found, all of the Legion was brought to Nocturne, which is ridiculously radioactive. This is what results in all Salamanders having the same "Fireborn" darkened skin and red eyes. As far as we know, they still receive recruits from Terra and one other place besides Nocturne, but they funnel all of their recruits through Nocturne. So if you are doing a post-Vulkan army, then in all likelihood they will have the darkened skin and red eyes from beig exposed to Nocturne. I would say instead have some sort of icon painted onto the armor to denote their Terran heritage. Maybe give them some lightning bolt iconography of the Unification-era to go alongside the fire iconography of Nocturne. Fire Golem
The Nocturnians would be darker, as their geneseed mutation was that their skin darkened (more than usual) in radiation, and there was a lot more of that on Nocturne I believe. Onehip
Awesome, thanks!!! Kol, love the idea of having the assault squad with some sort of markings for Terra. Sepperates them a bit Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308300-fluff-junkies-need-your-opinion/#findComment-4060843 Share on other sites

Sepperates them a bit For that I'd go with few ram heads here and there, and darker green on some plates, and the usual lightning bolts raptor. Brother-Chaplain Kage
The Raptor Imperialis is a common icon for Terran Astartes that fought during the Unification Wars. http://i.imgur.com/ddxZFYj.png Other times, just the lightning bolts can be seen alone, or added to other icons. Atia
or you could use the saturnyne ram as terran marking ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308300-fluff-junkies-need-your-opinion/#findComment-4061342 Share on other sites
Kol Saresk
or you could use the saturnyne ram as terran marking ;)Yeah, but what about the Terrans that came after Vulkan? At least the lightning bolts are something associated with everything that comes from Terra. But the Ram? Ultimately, it is all personal preference. I thought the lightning bolts and raptor head were associated only with those who fought in the Unification Wars, while the Saturnyne Ram survived beyond at least for a time. Kol Saresk
Typically they would be, but very few people think "lightning bolts" without thinking Terra so, to me personally, it's a subtle design that can be thrown in there without the raptor head, thus just making decoration. After all, even Nostraman Night Lords have lightning on their armor. But, again to me personally, it wouldn't make sense for a Terran who came after the Primarch the wear the Saturnyne Ram since it is a specific throwback what the Legion once was and they personally have no link to that past. But like I said, this is simply my opinion and how one does their minis is up to their personal preferences.
