OneOfOneThousand
Ok, so i've been holding off starting my XV legion in order to wait until the Prospero book eventually lands. In the meantime, since Betrayal I have gathered my XX legion and elements of a III legion force. I've now got 8000 point of Alpha Legion and a much smaller 1500 Emperor's Children allied contingent. I'm at the point that my Alphas are done to an extent I won't add too much more to them apart from Alpharius and Exodus (if he comes out) so I want to get my teeth into my XV legion force. The issue is, what to use to make them look a little more Thousand Son-esque? I could use the conversion kits for 40K TS and I have a few khopesh blades already from Kromlech and the like in readiness but what has everyone else done for the XV? Just painted them red/gold and left them, sculpted loin cloths, used third party bits? Would be good to get an idea so I can at least get going before the book lands (whenever that will be!) Thanks all, any inspiration will be welcome inspiration at this point. depthcharge12
Thousand sons will be my second army (I have heresy dark angels at the moment). I'm afraid to start them purely based on the possibility that the FW kits will blow anything else out of the water. Everyone else I've seen has used third party bits and/or green stuffed. Red and gold is the way to go at the moment with cream colored shoulder pads. I'm thinking of doing an airborne TS force because the imagery in the book made them sound really awesome: the pilots and the marines were psychically linked to the stormbirds so that they could have flawless control over the ship and move out of any AA fire and coordinate the landings. Also, elstonation on YouTube has started doing his thousand sons, so you may want to check those out. He did a lovely color by using metallics for the armor and then doing a bunch of glazes with tamiya clear red over it. Kizzdougs
I'd keep it pretty simple. People (including me :P ) tend to push the Egyptian theme a bit too hard in my opinion. It can look great on elite units and characters, but can be a bit too over the top on the more regular units such as tacticals, assault marines etc. If I was to start a XV Legion force I'd try to go for something like this (check out third place). That is a great example of how to add a little flavor without making it look ridiculous. OneOfOneThousand
Love those GD minis - thanks for those chaps. I am tempted to hold off until Prospero but as you said going overboard on the tacticals seems a bit much! All seems quiet on the XV modelling front but I have a feeling that it may just accelerate once the book comes out :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308390-the-xv-legion-modelling-opportunities/#findComment-4063172 Share on other sites
Fire Golem
Those Golden Daemon TS look awesome. I think the one FW image of the TS shows a good amount of detail, it just has a loincloth, a scarab on the belt, and a couple of cartouches on the breastplate. Just enough for the theme to be there but not over the top. Ion
You could take a look at the last March of the Legions, which was for the XV But I agree with what's being said here, save the heavy Egyptian aspects for the more important characters, less is more for the majority Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308390-the-xv-legion-modelling-opportunities/#findComment-4063577 Share on other sites
Relict
FW already announced that they will be releasing upgrade kits (heads, chests, shoulders) for the still uncovered Legions (the ones for the White Scars were already shown at the grand reopening). My advice would be to wait for those to come out and get some general formations fitted out. Remember that even the Thousand Sons were not a Legion of 100% psykers - they still had line units. The psykers will likely become Legion-exclusive units, so you can rest assured that they will receive their own dedicated FW minis. All seems quiet on the XV modelling front but I have a feeling that it may just accelerate once the book comes out If you're inspired to have a go at the XV I'd say go for it. Hobby inspiration can be illusive and should be taken advantage of (within reason). If it's just an interesting idea that you have floating around, maybe hold off until the release. I think you should be pretty safe to make a start on the basic units if you wanted to. It's hard to anticipate what the XV will get from Forgeworld, but going on current form I'd expect: shoulder pads, a Contemptor, torsos and heads, brass etch, decals, landraider/rhino doors and maybe a command set. I'd also expect to see the Sekhmet in terminator armour. That means that you'd be safe to work on most of the legion vehicles (minus landraiders/rhinos if you plan to use the legion specific doors), rapier batteries, outriders, recon marines, basic terminators (although if they do get a unique unit in terminator armour you might want to do a kit bash combining the different kits or even use the unique terminators as sergeants like I've done for my EC), tacticals, tactical support, assault marines, breachers and heavy support. The only problem might be if you wanted to use the Legion shoulder pads (although that still leaves vehicles, obviously). Personally I like to limit the torso and head upgrade kits to veteran units, sergeants and HQs :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308390-the-xv-legion-modelling-opportunities/#findComment-4063686 Share on other sites
OneOfOneThousand
Yeah I think I'm going to start running up the tactical squads for now. I have the chaos TS dread which I've finished in pre-heresy colours today and I've got some spare MkIV I was going to use for my XX which I won't need now as I already have 40 marines for them. The elements of flavour for the marines seems to bethe way to go - what about using the 40k TS heads for the sgts? I have 18 of those partially painted so I could easily requisition those for my tacticals. I'll hold off on the Contemptor and the vehicles with doors as I tend to get legion specifics for those but the tacticals I'll use decals for. If the quality of the UM and WB ones are indicative of what the TS will get we are in for a treat! Very excited to get going now! After painting all my AL I'm ready for a change of colour! depthcharge12
I do think the XVth legion is definitely more mkIV friendly, a lot of the mkII or III I've seen has been a little bit OTT or not fitting in my opinion.
