Sons of a northern darkness-news:bloodthirster wip

Here I am, after  a long time passed to lurk the forum i decided myself to sign up and show my project that is going bigger everyday.

First I have to say that i restarted from some time to play 40k after a years long pause. My army is full of old models that i painted when I was young and...not so experienced. So i decide to do a general renovation of my collection that I used most for tournament plays, giving it a theme, a definitive general color scheme and a hystory. I named the characters and wrote stories for them and I tried to imagine why they could use a specific unit in battle: this helps so much to prompt someone to convert and reorganize 5.000+ point  of old chaos marine!

The process is still in progress and here I am.

First, the fluff: I chose to write the fluff for my personal warband, a Chaos undivided warband. They don't worship any chaos gods, they just use them when needed and leave after.

Sons of a Northern Darkness

The Sons of a Northern Darnkness are a Chaos Space Marine Warband under the command of the Lord Sorcerer Burzum, Keeper of the Artefacts.

His former name was Varg Vikernes and he was the Chief Librarian of the Sons of Tagtren, a successor chapter of Ultramarines.

Sons of Tagtren

The Sons of Tagtren were created during the 26th founding in 810.M41 and their were made with the purpose to contain and fight warp anomalies from Holocronis channel, one of the stable route exiting from the galactic North of the Maelstrom.

The planet Tagtren was a scarcely populated rural word, orbiting around a Solar Class star but with an average temperature really low. The planet is half covered with a wide crust of ice, with a large equatorial belt covered with thick tundra forests.

Higly isolated because of the near presence of the Maelstrom, the system had a surprisingly high technical level thanks to the presence of an ancient Ark, built in Mars during the dark age of Technology for the purpose of colonizing new worlds. The immense ship was the lonely survivor of the colonization fleet which was lost for some reasons in the distant past and on the planet a few descendants of the Mars colons still inhabited the surface in small outposts.

Ultima Segmentum Administratum considered the mighty Ark, despite partly deactivated and unable to leave Tagtren’s orbit, suitable for accomodate a Chapter Fortress for the Sons of Tagtren.

In 850.m41 Magus Dominus Horgh, invited by the Ultima Segmentum commander started the works of refitting the mighty ship for his new duty. The entire chapter was relocated in Ultramar for training and consolidation.

In 880.M41 the works were concluded and the chapter relocated to Tagtren.

A tragic event soon happened: during the first ignition of the immense main plasma generator, a massive radiation leak occurred. Half the chapter died and all the seniors officials  send from other Chapters to lead the Sons of Tagtren died as well, including the Chapter Master and his Staff. During the disaster the Chapter fell in a deep chaos and the Babab Sector Fleet had to send immediate help to stabilize the irradiated Ark.

Genesis

The Captain of the Third Company Abbath was believing that officials directly drawn from the Sons of Tagtren’s ranks could be able to better handle the situation, without the heavy  tutoring of outsiders officer. His proposal was taken in account and he was appointed Chapter Master, along with administrative counselors form the nearest chapter, the Astral Claws.

Under their pernicious influence Abbath reorganized the entire chapter, trying to avoid another paralysis of the entire chapter, teaching every official to act and find solutions without outer help  or direct order. Independence and the abilty to work in an isolated and ostile environment were the keystones which with built the strenght of the chapter.

Meanwhile, Varg was appointed Chief Librarian: he was a young marine with a fascination for the ancient Tagtren colonisation. Immediately he started an excavation campaign under the north pole of the planet, with the help of Magus Dominus Horg. Following meters wide cable that connected unknown devices buried under the ice, they found an incredible discovery: the Heart of Winter.

It was an artifact directly from the Dark Age, a sentient Machine Spirit that was cut away from the control network of the planet during the early stages of the colonization of the planet.

It was alive, awaken and lustful to reconnect with his network.

Here Varg and the Magos, tempted by the arcane secrets of the Machine Spirits, swore obedience to him, repairing che connection damaged.

The Darkness from the north

Soon the planet started to pulse with arcane energies: robots and servitors drilled the ice crus, repairing ancient devices; above the Ark awoken, lost machines stirring back to life and silent reactors roaring back in fuction. The entire chapter, unable to control the ship, relocated to the surface of the planet, to answer the calling of the Chief Librarian.

The chapter marched toward the north pole, were the Heart of Winter was located and the all proceed to the depts abyss were he was lying: there, in front of the mighty and malign mind and his forbidden knowledge they swore loyalty, forever leaving the light of the Emperor.

Immortals

The high rank officials were blessed by the Heart of Winter as his beloved sons: filled of dark energies they became the Immortals, gaining power artifacts that Horgh built for them.

Burzum, with the aid of the planet wide psychic grid, used the Hearth of Winter to fill the empyrean around the system with Warp Storms, to obstacle any attempt of intervention by an imperial fleet.

The Sons of a Northern Darkness were born and they have plenty of time to expand their power...

My first problem were the old school obly: I own nine of them but they are ridicolously too small in comparison to the new ones, not to mention the small base so I managed to found some bigger and taller base. The colour scheme is still anonimous, mostly because are a sub-cult withe their own rituals.

Actually I tried the white/black scheme but in the end I realized that i was painting some Black Templars. I switched towards a dark red / dark blue scheme, with iron edges.

It's a good idea, I'll try with my chosens from Dark Vengeance-

In the meantime I tried the colour scheme on a hellbrute (first of three) and a maulerfiend (first of three).

I resolve to paint all the army at a game level, I'll spend more time only on the characters.

Yeah, I just imagined that is a perfect Chaos Lord, I was inspired by the book "Lord of Chaos" of Moynihan and Sonderling, who tell the ( sick ) story of Varg. He was also a pyromaniac that burned an impressive number of historycal wood church. I don't consider him a hero or a icon to follow, he's  just a psycho that leads a criminal gang.

Anyway his music is just...music, when you listen to an artistic product you don't look after the  criminal record of the artist that made it, otherwise a lot of hip-hop artist, just to make an example, should be banished.

I completed a maulerfiend and I made a scenic base for it after I found a Duplo barrel. Simple but effective I think.

Here I am with the second hellbrute, a new pet made by Horgh, the tainted magos who love to enslave daemons in his service.

A spare head of a whfb giant kit fit the deformed hellbrute's body...it's a bit too big for this model but being a daemonic engine I think the final resul it's nice.

I find that chaos spawn are very useful, they are fast, they hit hard and they have a reasonable overall thoughness.

There is only a problem, the models: they are just terrible in my opinion and they don't match at all my army style, full of clean marines really similar to the loyalist counterparts or knight style with swords, capes, shields and horses.

this jibbering monsters are not fit, so I found a quick alternative, using chaos hounds that match perfectly with my Archaon converted Lord.

I managed to find an appropriate height base and here it is the result:

This is a comparison with standard marine, I think the size and height of this spawn are right.

Quick question.

I see people using Spawn with Jug Lords a lot, how are they running them in the same unit? I was under the impression that beasts could not join cavalry, cannot find any information on it in the rule book. If someone could explain that would be much appreciated.

Cool models btwmsn-wink.gif

As Chaos Lord is an indipendent character, he can join every unit he wish. Obviusly he does not acquire the rules of the beast, so he's still affected by difficult terrains but he has hammer of wrath.

The second one is complete! The third will be completely magnetized to be used either maulerfiend or forgefiend...yes, I still hope that with the new future codex forgefiends will be of some utility.

anyway i'm full of bits of storm eagle as i bought two kits for the raptor gunship, so my bases are greatly improved.

The beasts are gathering... I'm working on the third maulerfiend and the third hellbrute.

I found that working always on the same colour scheme and technique is quite tiring, so I decided to take a pause and restore a really old bloodthister. It was in a really bad condition due to my efforts of enthusiastic newbie years ago.

I decide for a bighter colour scheme, so I used a clear grey primer to obtain a brighter red.

Here it is the wip.
