Test models

So I was bored and thought I'd test out a couple of legions I'd like to do using the paints I have available atm, and some weathering things I bought the other day, these are the results:

Iron Warriors:

I'm not sure if I went maybe too dark with the metal? They certainly look weathered! Also I don't have a yellow so not done any hazard stripes yet.

Raven Guard:

Considering it's just black I actually quite enjoyed painting this guy. My first attempt at any kind of freehand on the shoulder too. Tried to make it look dusty with the weathering stuff.

The photos aren't great, one day I need to get a proper camera instead of using my phone, but it's so much easier this way... I don't know what to do with the backpacks, more metal on the IW might be quite dull, I'll probably do black with some silver for the RG. I also don't know what colour to use for the RG eye lenses either. Going with pitch black, ala Hyenidae's IW (who are massively inspirational, got that plog bookmarked!) for my IW. The RG in particular I think looks better irl than the photo, as does the IW in MkII...

So yeah, thoughts?

Well, the Raven Guard photos really didn't come out great, he definitely looks better in person. There's still details I need to do on it too, the cables and stuff. I don't want to do too much on it because I don't really want to take away from the matte black stealthy feel, although the bright white shoulder probably already does! Also, is there anyway to tone down a really bright white? I didn't want to wash it because that would just make it look dirty (although I did that with the weathering powder anyway). But I thought the white was maybe a bit too bright in contrast with the black.

As for the IW, I think they've just been over washed a bit. They had Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade. Maybe another highlight would brighten them up a bit?

Might seem silly but I'm pretty proud of my XIX. I know it's really simple but it turned out much better than I feared! Didn't quite feel up to a raven though haha.

Next attempt on the iron warriors, try medium-thin washes of Nuln oil and Drakenhoff nightshade. Makes for a decent effect.

As for my totally-not-biased choice, I prefer the raven guard, though you could have used a darker gray as the drybrush color; maybe Eshin Grey with a black/blue wash over it?

I kinda like your iron warriors for being a little different. Did you gloss those shoulderpads or is that my eyesight?

For the raven guard, I think it looks very neat and subtle. Why don't you fully finish one by adding in the eye colour and some detail or metal parts and a minor bit of chipping. I think it will stand out enough to look good. For the white, tough to paint well over black, you could weather it heavily with sponge chipping and a little rust to break the contrast.

Yup I like the weathered look, definitely makes heresy marine painting so much more!

Right. Second attempt. Again, photos aren't great, they're quite hard to photograph, it's rather overcast today. The RG in particular, I took about 10 photos and these are the best, still not very good :/

IW; I did another highlight to brighten the metal up a little, did the shoulder trims gold, and the backpacks. They are definitely a dark metal, but they aren't quite as dark as the photos and I'm reasonably happy with them. Still need a yellow to try some hazard stripes.

RG; again, rubbish photo... I'm reasonably happy with him, not sure on the blue eyes, some of the highlights could be neater (I think I need a darker grey too, Dawnstone looks a lot like the bare resin so it looks a bit like the paints just chipped from the edges...). The highlights don't show up very well on the photos either. I don't know if it looks too dark, but at the same time it suits the stealthy feel. It's definitely not finished though and i don't know what it's missing. So maybe it does need some white?

Here's his buddy, who isn't finished but you can see the highlights a bit better?

I'm still not sure I really enjoy painting. I'm reasonably pleased with it until I leave it and come back, or take photos, or see something someone else has done. My attention doesn't hold for long, and it's taken me... 5 hours maybe to get these five models to this very mediocre point, on top of probably the same yesterday.

It's hard to get pics of dark models that them off but from what I can see the highlighting looks neat. It looks as if you've done blue eyes on the RG, maybe try to use a lighter colour, or even mix a little white in then hit it with a glaze. Will give the model a nice point to look at. When you come to base them think about a lighter base, just to let the black and highlights stand out more.

IW's look great.

The RG, yeah, definitely a nice white highlight on the eyes would make the pop a bit more.  How about painting the pipes on the chest in some dull metal to stand out a bit more?  They look to have the same minor highlight as the rest of the model.  Same goes possibly for the backs of the knees and inside thighs etc, though I doubt you'd want much colour there.  Just a quick google search for images of 30k RG gives us some interesting examples - if there is something there you like, perhaps you could see what it is that makes it pop for you and replicate it on your model?

Thanks guys. Yeah the pipes just have the same highlight, I went by Extermination because they were black in there but I'll try the metal as well and see.

@GreyCrow, I'll try a green for the eyes too, night vision goggles sounds quite fitting for RG too.

Won't be til Saturday now probably that I can do any more.

  • 4 weeks later...

So i tried another Sons of Horus today, tried it a bit different; my old method was grey washed with Coelia Greenshade, I tried it today with silver washed with Coelia Greenshade, for a metallic green. Was just wondering what people thought; I quite like it but not sure it's overly SoH, not overly green...

Yeah maybe, another paint I'll need to buy then haha. I don't really get it, it went really green over the grey and I was expecting it to be the same but it's definitely not as green.

Silver isnt really grey either due to the metallic flakes in the paint to make it shiny. And even if you removed those, it still wouldnt be a gray..gray.. Itd be a bit different.
