b1soul
I was being sarcastic about Meros and Kano Yeah? They just reminded me of the other Blood Angels characters that I like. OK, no prob Just stating that those two characters are very bland Shiban is pretty damn awesome He seems like a good chap Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308516-your-favorite-hh-character/page/5/#findComment-4316238 Share on other sites
Hellath
I just read Galaxy in Flames for the third time. Once again, I found myself admiring Saul Tarvitz. This comes as a surprise to me, as I would probably never build an Emperor's Children army. His nobility, humility and courage are truly inspiring. Sevatar, Sigismund and Loken would be close behind. Raktra
Leaving out Primarchs, because I've got a whooooole load of things to say on a bunch of 'em, I'd go for:1- Khârn. In 40k I was never interested in him because, you know, "ARGHLBARGHLCHOPCHOPRAARGH" doesn't make for much of a character. In Betrayer though... Holy God, what a character. I felt him more as an unfortunately aligned neutrality than a traitor, only going down that path because he was too tied to others already in it. 2- Meduson. C'mon, you all knew this was coming. Admittedly, I've read very little of him as I don't have his novel, but from the Fire Raptor scene in Vengeful Spirit and his sections in Retribution, he just leaves a mark as a mercilessly bitter badass. 3- Ollianus. For the most part I don't like Perpetuals, but Ollie gets a pass because of everything else about him. Still a sane and loyal man after all his years? Check. Beatin' Nazis to death? Check. Possibly the last man of an "old" faith in existence? Check. Standing up to god-mode Horus with nothing more than his piddly little guardsman gear to hand, and not flinching once? :cussing right you better check that. Hesh Kadesh
You raise a good point on Khârn, and Betrayer actually. One think ADB is good at writing is a likeable antihero. No problem with that, but I want him to make a truly evil character as his main character. They have their odd quirks, but they are all placed as entirely reasonable characters forced into something that theybdidn't understand. Almost naive (which given the situation, everyone would be, the whole Pandora's Box idea). I can understand why he did that, to remove them from the pantomime, stereotypical moustache twirler of varying flavours. If ADB can make me like Lorgar, and a Possessed, a Berserker (Lord of the Red Sands is the best story to date in the HH imo atm), Abaddon, a Night Lord and a Thousand Son, I want to see a PoV novel of Erebus, Kor Phaeron, Eidolon/Lucius, hell even a Salamander that's not some dull as dishwater saint or pyromaniac. I am a fan of the Perpetuals; Gramaticus and Ol Person mainly. I love when you get the flash backs and see how they interact with the Emperor or when they give you these slices of mythology and history that they have seen and how it still reflects in what is being done in the 30k time line Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308516-your-favorite-hh-character/page/5/#findComment-4316445 Share on other sites

librisrouge
I just read Galaxy in Flames for the third time. Once again, I found myself admiring Saul Tarvitz. This comes as a surprise to me, as I would probably never build an Emperor's Children army. His nobility, humility and courage are truly inspiring. I think the authors did a wonderful job of writing up positive examples of marines from the traitor legions so that the reader can truly appreciate the tragedy of that legion falling. Every Emperor's Children could have been a Saul Tarvitz, and the galaxy a better place for it, but they weren't and now can never be. Ditto for the Death Guard, and Garro, and the Sons of Horus, and Loken. We grow to like these legions through the lense of these characters and then see any hope we've built shattered by Chaos. Ditto for Sigismund though. Exactly what we would come to expect from the father of the Black Templars. Vulkan He'Dan
There are too many fantastic characters in the series to pick one, of even a top 3. Sevetar is a great character, his twisted sense of justice and dry humour make an interesting character. Khârn in betrayer has been mentioned several times as has Argel Tal so I won't go into those. Theil is a great character as well, going against the grain but proving he is a great leader. Oll and Gramaticus are both great characters as well.... I could go on and on and on and on Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308516-your-favorite-hh-character/page/5/#findComment-4317049 Share on other sites
bluntblade
Revuel Arvida has become one of my favourites. Psychic fire and walloping Eidolon aside, he's like the most understated badass I've come across so far. Psychologically bearing the weight of his entire Legion being gone, fighting alongside the Scars for years whilst holding the flesh change back, and for all that he's one of the most human Astartes characters I've read. Abaddon would be one of my favourites, if he'd continued to be written as well as he was in Horus Rising. He really lost his gravitas in False Gods, and then Galaxy In Flames made the mistake of removing him from the battle for the most part in a way that doesn't make sense to me. As far as I'm concerned, at the outside of the massive civil war, he and Aximand should be leading from the front. Legionnaire of the VIIth
For me, I think I would say: 1) Ahriman 2) Sevatar 3) Khârn Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308516-your-favorite-hh-character/page/5/#findComment-4553827 Share on other sites
foamy248
I haven' t read many of the BL HH books, but I loved Nykona Sharrowkyn in Angel Exterminatus and Argel Tal in the First Heretic. Sharrowkyn was just a complete badass (sniping a Primarch and out-duelling Lucius!), and I think that, fluffwise, he is a Raven Guard done RIGHT. He seemed really quiet and down-to-earth, but unflinchingly loyal and courageous. Plus, his shadow-walking shenanigans were pretty funny. Argel Tal seemed also to be a character who was really morally-aware and down-to-earth in a Legion commonly portrayed as being one dimensional moustache-twirling villains who solely exist to make the goodies seem better. Instead, Tal was pretty complex and actually recognised the 'issues' in his chapter. His daemonic transformation scene during Istvaan V is quite interesting too as the daemon takes control. All in all, though, Sharrowkyn and Tal were characters that struck me as being less one dimensional and more interesting/likeable than some I'd their gene-enhanced kin. TRIBUN
1) John Grammaticus 2) Khârn 3) Sevatar All on the same level... Sonoftherubric21
Top three? dang...hard sell.... In no particular order; Argel Tal is definitely one. Amazing characterization, compelling, and relatable....for a demon-possessed super-human Demi-god. Torn, Somewhat Sad or Melancholy, and somehow all to human even after a daemon shares his soul. Ahriman is another obvious one. So driven and so optimistic, or perhaps hopeful is a better word, but always comes up just short. However; you can never keep this bugger down. He just keeps getting back up! Jagahtai Khan. A Primarch (or marine) coming across as "reasonable" always struck me as very lacking in 30k/40k. Jagahtai does, and is. I also love how he is portrayed in Scars after the mini-rebellion he had to deal with among his own. - But there are SO many. hard to narrow it down! This is just the three that really stuck out in my mind when first reading the question. tikhunt
Erebus is the person that made me fall I. Love with the Word Bearers, or rather it was the reflection between himself and Lorgar/Argel Tal. The Urizen wanted humanity and Chaos to become one and had an almost noble plan to help ascend humanity, Erebus on the other hand just wanted Chaos. It's a nice dynamic between the two and helps show how far even his most trusted fell for the wrong reasons. E_50_Panzer
#1: Ventanus and Selaton. Their ability to crack off a joke while their legion is being annihilated made them instantly likable.
