Your favorite HH character

Recommended Posts

So. Many. Pages. I was trying to read as much of this thread as I could....but every time I got to the bottom, the thread was another page longer. Good stuff!

I especially like the REMARKABLE fact there has been no sniping other people's choices....rare feat in today's world. Good work, B&C!

Quotes from others and my responses, hidden for the sake of eyeballs:

favorite loyalist: Targutai Yesugei- Scars made me really appreciate Chris Wraight's characterization skills with this old stormseer. Especially when he's like a kindly father figure to the shattered legions, and a brother to a primarch in spirit.
One of the best lines of the series:

Mortarion:Then you will not be persuaded. A shame. I invested much energy to save you, brother. I shall take no pleasure in your destruction.
Jaghatai:And there is the difference between you and me. By the time I make my kills, I'm laughing.

Ran

I love the quip between Fulgrim and Khan:

Fulgrim: I have talked to contacts on Mars, Jaghatai, and they say you do strange things to your ships.

Khan: I hear you do strange things to your warriors.

I like Loken because he effectively brings you into the setting, and his character ark looks like it will get interesting.

Sevatar is good fun, i like that he is clearly 'bad' but seems to have an honour system all of his own, plus he headbutted Sigismund - which makes him alright in my books.

I feel like overall the blood angels have been written pretty poorly (same issue with dark angels), however I do like Sanguinius' portrayal in the recent Sotha book, his character shines through well, same for Kurze when they have their little chat actually.

Raldoron is quite cool, chapter master that goes to a fight where greater daemons in play... with just a bolter is pretty cool. I do however prefer his portrayal in Prospero Burns... I REALLY need them to display the supposed combat prowess he has however, as in one of the books he's ranked as being up there with champions like Sigi... Im not as much of a fan of Amit as many people seem to be, Azkhellon is pretty cool and has been fleshed out more than most of the BA characters.

^Absolutely agree on all of this.

Ignace Karkasy: He was funny, relatable, and died fighting for his ideals even though he never really held a weapon.

Amendera Kendel: Former Sister of Silence, the first true Inquisitor, and the first human to order Exterminatus - proving that women have an important (and metal as $*) role in the heresy.

Rear Admiral Kaminska: Another strong female character - without her the Furious Abyss wouldn't have been destroyed and bad things would have happened to Macragge... and I have to love a human that mouths off regularly to marines and gets away with it - which brings me to:

Flag-Captain Lotara Sarrin: This woman is a true daughter of Khorne - bloodthirsty, completely bad-ass, and takes no censored.gif: - all wrapped up in a civilized package that shows that a bloodthirsty future servant of Khorne can collect blood for the blood god, skulls for the skull throne, and reap a bloody tally while still chilling like a bond villain. Even Angron respects her and I dare say LISTENS to her. She shot a berserker IN THE FACE and not only lived to tell about it but stood her ground to cuss him out afterwards. I really hope that Angron and Khorne have kept her around in the 41st millenium - cause having her as a Daemon Princess still commanding Angron's fleet would be awesome - or having her become the mind and soul of the ship would be cool as well even if it would make me sad (But AD-B, if you are reading this... Daemon Princess - she deserves it and can cause death for Khorne on a massive scale - and the image of a Khornate Daemoness in a ships' command-throne wearing an immaculate uniform with the bloody-hand calmly issuing orders with a noble-born enunciation... that image is priceless and shows Khorne's depth that is rarely seen... heck, now I want to convert a Valkia the Bloody model into Daemon Lotara just because). Easily one of my favorite characters even though she's not a core marine character. She stole the show in Betrayer and I'm looking forward to more of her.

I don't know who this Lotara Sarrin is, but I need to get me some....Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

No one has mentioned a single Salamander character? They need to get some better writers for the 18th legion! Vulkan is the biggest bro in all of the Space Marine legions. Pretty much everyone loved the guy.

I hear ya. I think the Salamanders suffer the same problem that the BA do in the HH series so far: the quality of writing really holds them back. I so want to like many of these characters, but they just haven't been fleshed out to well.

Further opinion on writing quality of BA so far:

I can't begin to say how much I would like to mention Blood Angels characters here (have yet to read Pharos, Angels of Caliban, or Master of Mankind), but their portrayals so far have been bland at best. James Swallow has been the worst offender of this, IMO, where he moves plot along and the writing is technically decent, but it just feels so ungrounded in the universe and mythology of 40k. It's like he has templates for stories and just wraps a setting around to fit them. In Fear to Tread Sanguinius, Raldoran, and the rest came off as ok...but not 40k. There was no soul to them.

In no particular order:

Targutai Yesugei: this character has done so much for a relatively obscure legion it can not be overstated. It adds so much depth and personification and adds a whole "wisdom of the earth" angle that helps turn the V Legion from caricatures into characters.

Garviel Loken: as others have addressed, not only is he the perfect "everybody" eyes with which to start the whole series, but his "the enemy's gate is down" moment in the duel with Lucius is probably my single most favorite moment (so far) in the entire HH series. A single act that exemplifies and personifies himself, his Primarch, and his Legion (and arguably all Space Marines) oh so well.

....that's all I can really cast my vote for at the moment. There were many others I liked for various reasons, but nothing really epic.

Best place to read about Sigismund? I actually don't think I've read any books other than Eisenstein where he is featured. He's clearly a fan favorite.

As for Sevatar....

I also don't know too much about him other than some of the audio dramas. However, based on those, I think he has the same sort of particular appeal that Heath Ledger's Joker from Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy has. He is evil in so many ways, yet has a weird code of sorts that you can't help but go along with. And he's just so damn fascinating and entertaining to follow that you can't look away. Despite all your internal protests and your gut-level disgust, you're enraptured with him and almost want to follow him just to see what happens next. The whole "laugh with the sinners over cry with the saints" thing.

  • Tarik Torgaddon: He's basically who I'd be if I was an Astartes, and the delightful tragedy of his end makes it so much more compelling.

Honorary mentions:

  • The Dreandnought awoken during Betrayer when the ship is being boarded, the previous leader of the XII: "Who are we fighting? The Ultramarines? Wait... what? Angroooonn..."
  • Targutai Yesugei and his human female bureaucrat friend from the Munitorum
  • 'Bear' from Prospero Burns
  • Argel Tal
  • Loken / Tarvitz / Garro take the hero award

My first pick will always be Ahriman! He's so awesome and so tragic...

Runners up are: Alpha Legionnaires Maesan & Malthace and Commander Arvas Janic. Spoilers ahead! smile.png

Maesan held his own and almost overpowered Nykona Sharrowkyn with only a knife, Malthace had a frigging flail for a hand! Both of them were just pure awesomeness all throughout The Seventh Serpent.

Commander Janic was so Alpha Legion he even sent fake blueprints to his own Primarch to keep the real layout of the base hidden in The Serpent Beneath.

As with all Alpha Legion characters from Black Library though, none survive... sad.png
