Does anyone ever run a naked Centurion?

I'm wondering if people ever run the basic HQ choice in order to tick the HQ requirement?

In the lists I'm currently working on I'm intended to feature a Primarch, and I don't really see any great benefit of fielding a Preator (aside from the great models that exist), or any of the Consul roles...

Am I being wasteful by not taking advantage of the expanded roles?

Edit: I am partial to a Legion Chaplain. Can anyone show me some decent conversions for inspiration? I'm disappointed that FW haven't created a model for him and the Librarian...

Just to add, I could actually use a Chaplain but I'm unsure what models to use or how to convert one for a very visually accurate Legion army...

Might be a bit wasteful since its only one head but the night lords head pack does have a skull face helm for that classic chaplain look. I know some conversions exist using Warriors of Chaos heads too.

Hmm, I'll have a look but I doubt I'll pick up a set of heads just to use one...

You could probably get away with using the stock Ivanus Enkomi torso with some weapon swaps? It's got a load of details that are relevant to the XIIIth and you could just write some cool lore as to why he's got some Minotaur icons and the like.

I'm planning on converting him into a XIIIth Legion Chaplain myself, but I'm currently working on my other Consuls.

Thanks, I actually just bought an ancient oop metal Chaplain. I'm supplementing him with a FW Bolt pistol and Shoulder pad, alongside a MkIV backpack.

How was Chaplain armour painted during the Heresy? I don't remember seeing any art in the Heresy books...

Black, primarily.

During the Great Crusade, the Emperor specifically outlawed religious worship of any kind, but several Space Marine Legions still employed spiritual advisors of some kind. The first known Space Marines who bore a resemblance to Chaplains were members of the XVIIth Legion, known as the Imperial Heralds. The Legion's 'heralds' wore black armour with a skull-faced helmet and a winged mace and delivered the Emperor's ultimatum to new worlds: submission or destruction.[5a] After the Primarch Lorgar joined the XVIIth, renaming them the Word Bearers, he created a role for spiritual advisors, referring to them as 'Chaplains', who were assigned to minister to their brothers' psychological needs.[2b] Like the heralds, these Chaplains carried a skull-faced helmet and a winged mace but initially wore the same colours as other Word Bearer Legionaries, repainting their armour black in remembrance of the ashes of Monarchia.[3a]

Similar positions also existed in other Legions, such as the Blood Angels Wardens, who served as the watchmen of the Blood Angels, serving as mentors and guides for the younger members of the Blood Angels, but also charged with upholding the laws of the IX Legion. These duties were varied, from offering a Captain advice on tactical doctrine, to leading a ceremony of remembrance for fallen Space Marines.[2a] Wardens also wore all-black armour and carried the Crozius Arcanum as a weapon.[2a][6] The Salamanders also had a body of chosen Legionaries who carried out the direct promulgation of the doctrines of Vulkan, shaped by the culture of Nocturne, called the 'Voices of Fire'.[5b]

After the Decree of Nikaea, Lorgar offered his Chaplains' services to the other Legions. These Chaplains travelled among the Legions to counsel former Librarians who felt uncomfortable at the loss of their psychic role, and ease them back into duty as ordinary Battle-Brothers. Many Primarchs accepted Lorgar's offer, the use of Chaplains spread to legions such as the Emperor's Children, World Eaters, and the Death Guard [4]. Other Primarchs such as Sanguinius declined, the duties being given to the already existing Wardens.[6]

Following the Horus Heresy, the position of Chaplain continued in both Loyalist and Traitor Legions, those in the Traitor Legions becoming known as Dark Apostles.

Thank you, Isinfier.

So.. basically having a Chaplain as an Ultramarines HQ is pretty un-fluffy >_>

Obviously! For what need do we Astartes have for spiritual advisors?! It reeks of religion and we all know that is foolish base superstition that needs to be exterminated for there is only the Imperial Truth! There is only Logic, Science and Reason!

/roleplayoff

Honestly, in game terms, you might be able to justify it; it just depends on the background of your particular force regardless of it being joined by a Primarch.

And on the table? Chaplains are well worth it for combat units.

Un-fluffiness and fluffiness only go so far: if you want to field it and the fluff doesnt strictly,100% say you cant (it very rarely will) then do it.

As for naked centurions, it would be a massive waste of potential to just use him as a 50pt space marine with slightly better stats.

I've only found one decent reason to use a naked Centurion so far, and that's to buy a jump pack for him and then attach him to an allied unit to confer the hit and run special rule with an Angel's Wrath RoW. And even then you still probably want him upgraded to a chaplain or something for Zealot.

As for Chaplains, they can be fluffy if you make them fluffy. Any role you can think of that might confer something like the Zealot USR to a unit can be a "Chaplain." For example, a Sons of Horus lodge chieftain, a Promethean Cult official for the Salamanders, or maybe a renowned warrior-philosopher of the Imperial Truth for the Fists or Ultramarines.

This. The rules are for a Chaplain, but you can fluff him however you like.

Well, I'll run a Librarian instead... I'll use the Sevrin loth model with a few tweaks :-)

Support Officer. Cant be a compulsory HQ selection. Same with the Praevian, Primus Medicae and Master of Signal.

Oh god damn it all lol

Librarian shouldn't be in the same boat as a Moritat and Primus Medicae!

Don't be put off by fluff. In fact if you include Guilliman that could be a good reason for a Chaplain.

Chaplains don't generally fit with 30k Ultras but of all the primarchs Guilliman was one of the most diplomatic. He may have appointed one member of his retinue as a Chaplain complete with the paraphernalia of skull helm, crozius and black armour as a conciliatory gesture to Lorgar. It would also be a statement of his acceptance of the Edict of Nikea.

Who's to say that Ultra marine chaplains wore black, wore skull helms or carried winged maces. Maybe they wore a laurels death mask (think sanguinary guard) and carried an executioners axe!

I could see them in the role of doctrine enforcement, the guys who enforce censure and in rare cases those who execute those marines who are guilty of an unforgivable crime.

In Ancient Rome a police commander was known as a Praefectus vigilum, maybe that could be your chaplain!

Really? Bloody hell. Stupid rule -.-

I wouldn't get wrapped up in the name the rule books assign to the different consuls, or the traditional look ascribed to them. It's already been established that the legions called their various officers by different titles, and that heraldry and symbols differed from unit to unit within the legions.

You can basically do whatever you want, within a little bit of reason.

"If you fluff it, they will come"

*no neon pink World Eaters please*

I planned to lead my force with a Chaplain; however, I didn't think the black armor and skulls thing quite fit 30k.  I was simply going to use the Chaplain consul rules to represent a commander whose courage and zeal were an inspiration to his men.  They would fight harder and face anything so long as he commanded them.

Since chappies get a free power weapon, he was also going to end up with a massive, hand-and-a-half relic chainsword, but rules-wise have a power sword and chainfist.  Using either weapon in a given assault phase would represent him wielding it one handed or two handed.

Like others have said, just because he's a chaplain doesn't mean he has to be a Chaplain.  Fluff him up however you want, use the customization of consuls to build your own special characters.

The problem with the naked centurion is the same problem the space marine captain has except the Centurion has the consul upgrade which is a godsend. The problem is is that the basic centurion dosent really buff your forces in any meaningful way (unless you take a consul) except by fighting in close combat, And by the time you've spent the upgrades to make the Centurion good in combat you might aswell take the Praetor who is not only better in combat but comes stock with his own inbuilt army buff. The only time it's really advisable is when your just looking for a placeholder HQ. And even then the consul upgrade is only 35 pts.

Agreed I'm pretty sure it was only after the HH that Chaplains took on the whole Skull helm thing. It's quoted somewhere that it's primarily about "showing the deathly visage of the Emperor" or some such so you're not constrained with the black armour/crozius/skull helm.

If you wanted to fluff it out you could have him as a member of the Invictarii - they served in retinues for Gulliman and the other Tetrarchs and were marked out for advancement for more than just prowess but ability to lead and inspire others as well. Or even the Vigil Operatii, the Ultramar secret police would have some Legion officers to keep the humans who do the dirty work in line. Plus the Invictarii upgrades are cool and there's a lot of model opportunites with some other bits and pieces like capes and loin clothes thrown in that you could probably outdo a regular chaplain model

With Word Bearers I need an additional Chaplain or Centurion in addition to my mandatory HQ, so an unupgraded Centurion plus a Chaplain or one of the Word Bearer special characters can really help save on points. Wouldn't run him naked though - I've built him with AA, boarding shield, melta-bombs and a sword (will be painted to represent an tainted weapon, but will also be used as a standard CCW or power sword depending on points or how I'm feeling). The boarding shield is to help boost his squad with defensive grenades and works well with a specialist weapon like the tainted weapon.
