Sororita Katya
This is were I will post all fluff, WIP's and battle reports of my order. So without further adieu... The Order of the Calling Mother Category: Order Militant, Minor Homeworld: Cathedral world Arkhange, beside the Dominion of Storms. In the 41st millenium this is a well built up Cathedral world, it is primarily the Order of the Calling Mothers' home world but it also has a bustling merchant city upon the same continent. The rest of the world is primarily untouched except for a small monastery upon the tallest peak of the southern continent. This is where the Repentia that have made penance in the fires of battle make pilgrimage to become full fledged sisters of the order once more. They must make the trip through the tropical forests within the equators belt and then begin their ascent. What is a generally warm and humid environment turns bitter and icy by the time one is reaching the top. Once there the woman must sit in prayer for days, months or even years in silence until the Mistress allows her to rise once more as a Battle Sister. Those that return from this ordeal are given the rank of Sister Superior, or in very rare cases become what is referred to as a Cannoness Redeemer, instead of charging into battle, these women fire the anti air quad guns that protect the citadel or forward lines. Arkhange is also known for its night time displays as flares of galactic energy surge through the planets ionosphere creating dazzling colours and lights. The Sisters call them the fires of the Emperor and watch them to keep their minds ever focussed on purging their Holy Lords enemies from existence. Origins: Founded in the 40th millenium. They were named after the martyred saint Maria Pasov. Known for her fierce loyalty for the Imperium, her Emperor and her fellow Sisters. Maria fell at the hands of the Daemon Prince Azka'yath, who attempted to convert Arkhange into a hideous Daemon World to which to use as a platform for his assaults further into the realms of mankind. The Grey Knights, who were initially called to the planet did not arrive until three days after the battle of Arkhange, they do not know how or why for they did not stray from their path, it is to be believed that Tzeentchian plotting was afoot that stopped them from reaching their goal. Meanwhile a Sororitas Ecclesiarchial Fleet saw the manifestation of chaos come forth from the warp and so moved quickly to eradicate the taint from Imperial space, landing far enough away to create a solid forward line. The battle upon the surface raged for days, for every swarm of daemons that were eradicated under holy flame, another two would be summoned in its place, the dark rituals of their enemy creating a bigger warp in reality. The Sisters did not falter and with will and faith standing strong in the face of horror, finally they saw the face of their true enemy, with Hailers chanting and the sisters battle cries ringing loudly over the planes they charged into the fray. Penitent engines were given the order and their constructs auditory and chemical protocols engaged, switching the nullified engines into insane displays of destruction, whizzing their blades through the daemonic flesh before them, flames spouting after every swing. Maria, sitting within her repressor saw the opportunity she required and with dozer blade lowered ordered the driver to ram their way through towards the centre, the heavy bolters and flamers of her sisters fired through the tanks hatches, reaching her destination she jumped out of the repressor, power sword held high and inferno pistol firing at the horrors hurtling towards her. Ducking and weaving she sliced through one and shot round after round through many more, finally she was within range, snapping off three rounds, hitting the daemon prince, two bouncing off his thick armor but one shooting straight through the side of the princes neck. Letting out a roar that ruptured ear drums, Azka'yath charged forwards and with a sweep of his claw grasped the Canoness by the throat, bringing her close to his face to gloat for he had seen her fall at his hands. Alas the Emperor clouded the daemons sight as even with her spine snapping in two within the clutches of the vile daemon and her body breaking, she raised her power sword one last time and thrust it down the creatures throat before her. Azka'yath twisted and contorted his form as he tried to avoid the blessed metal, but to no avail. With his final strength he plunged his daemonic claws into Maria, looking to claim her heart, but his physical form collapsed before he had the opportunity. Falling to the ground Maria gasped air through her crushed lungs, looking around she saw her sisters in battle and seeing her work was not yet complete, rising to her feet once more she thrust her sword high, yelling to the sisters to rally behind her. With zeal and her body alight with holy flame she cut swathes through the fading daemons with bolter, melta and flamer purging the taint of chaos from that world forever. When the battle was won, the Adepta Sororitas searched high and low for Maria, but alas all that was found was her cloak and rosarius. On that day the sisters who fought beside her claimed to start a new Order in her name, and so the Order of the Calling Mother was born, reserving Arkhange as its base of operations. The Order of the Calling Mothers symbol is of a woman in robes, sword drawn and pointed forward, with the woman calling back to her comrades to march forward. More commonly seen in silhouette form with white light shining around the outline, but some units who are steeped in the history of the Order have finely hand woven standards depicting her likeness. The Order prides itself on loyalty above all else, with severe punishments for those who abandon their squads, this is indeed rare but when it has occurred the only punishment that has been given is through entrapment within a penitent to find true absolution. Uniform: Deep green power armor to represent the resiliency and heart of their patron saint Maria and that each must keep their faith solid for the protection of their fellow sister and imperium alike. The armor is lined with gold edging as a reminder that they fight to protect the Emperor, but their necklaces and pendants silver to show their purity as his daughters. Their capes and robes are white, with purple lining a secondary show of purity and a reminder that each sister has no family other than the sisterhood, and that it is a privilege, not a right given to them, to adorn themselves with the power armour and equipment they have been bestowed with. Relics: The Rosarius of Saint Maria, one of two items found after the battle of Arkhange, worn only by the Prioress, it is said to watch over and protect every woman within the Order. The Cloak of Saint Maria, one of the two items that belonged to the patron saint of the Order that were found after the battle of Arkhange. In darkness this cloak still glows with the white light that emitted from Saint Maria herself, it is classed as a proof of miracles and held within the deepest vault available upon Arkhange and guarded by two Sisters at all times. The Star of Conflagration is a silver lantern containing a flame that never goes out, it was given to the Order as a gift by the Grey Knight Order after assisting in an ambush within the Perdus Rift. When it is looked upon by one pure of taint, they are said to be gifted a revelation of the Emperors will. Whilst if they have a heart that is blackened or twisted flames will pour from its cradle and burn the victim to nothingness within its fiery wrath, used at the High Court mainly within the Grand Cathedral upon Arkhange, in dire times of need it is held aloft into battle, creating a wall of flame before the sisters as they march against their foes. The hand of St. Helena was a gift of tidings from the Order of the Ebon Chalice which most of the order originated from their ranks. The hand has been through many battles, held within a simulacrum and has never been lost. Sith’ari
Thats some great background right there. I love an army with a well thought out story behind it - good stuff! *Furyou Miko
Without a contrast colour, my main concern would be that the army will look 'washed-out' on the table top. Sororita Katya
Well there will be purple on the base of the robes and around the sleeves, the Bolter will be brass and silver, the lining of the armour gold and their necklaces silver, not sure what to go with the respirator tubing, was gonna leave it black with gold for the skull. Or do you not think that will work? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308775-the-order-of-the-calling-mother/#findComment-4074961 Share on other sites
*Furyou Miko
It needs a darker or more immediate colour - the problem is that the scheme is too pastel at the moment. Black detailing instead of gold on the soft armour and the rebreather could do it. WarriorFish
It's a good scheme, but you don't have to go too heavy on a contrast. Black soft armour would help along with a black bolter case, perhaps some use of a more orange gold could offset it? The base is an important part of an army's colours too which can help. vonny
Or you could keep the colors as is, but make sure you blackline it really well. you know, make sure there's a definite dark edge between the various parts of the model, such as around the armour plates, between the glove and the rest of the arm, etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308775-the-order-of-the-calling-mother/#findComment-4077430 Share on other sites
Sororita Katya
I don't know whether I have the paint skills to line in, I didn't get one finished as my paint i wanted to use for a base had not been closed properly and dried up :,( so will have to grab some this week and get one ready by the weekend. Generally to add darker definition I use a wash to shade, do you think this will be dark enough to set them apart, I was thinking coelia nightshade. vonny
no idea. Sororita Katya
With paint being out of stock and so having to order it online, I have filled in my time delving into the fluff of the Sisters, and so have started this little piece. Let me know if you would like me to continue it here :) Part I Anna Abalyshev raised from her kneeled position, her time of prayer for the morning had ended. Lifting her head she looked upwards towards the gleaming towering image of the Emperor. The golden statue shone in the morning light, accenting the detail that had been put into the piece. Every etching in the armor, wave in the robe, accentuated and glorified the image. Placing her rosary beads into a satchel hanging from her belt she walked confidently out of the room, knowing that the Emperor would be with her that day. Reaching the end of the hall she opened the large doors out into the main lobby of the structure. The Cathedral of Saint Maria was a large architectural masterpiece sat within the centre of a labyrinth of sprawling parks and minor shrines. Places of worship, reflection and meditation could be found throughout as well as areas to practice and hone the skills of the many Sisters that resided here. At any one time the Cathedral accommodated at least 3,000 Adepta Sororitas personnel and with every day passing the shipping port would be abuzz with vessels leaving or returning from missions for the Ecclesiarchy and the many branches the Sisters of Battle assisted in also. Of course, to requisition a force from Anna's ranks she expected a very good reason, and today she would get one. Her day began with her own time of prayer and reflection, as she completed this time the entire population of Sisters would start to enter for the morning sermon spoken by Preceptor Dominika. It would be during this time that Anna would have meetings that were of any urgency or secrecy, as she entered her quarters she came face to face with a piece of her past. "It's been a while, you haven't kept in touch." The woman spoke forwardly in front of her, as always trying to see if she could make her younger sister show any signs of passion away from her usual composed self. "Well, I have been busy running the Order, and unlike you I am always in the one place or easy enough to find. But seeing you have come to visit, how have you been Krista?" "I am well, otherwise I wouldn't be here. Unfortunately though this is not a visit, so to speak, but instead an order, I need three squads of your finest to assist me and another Inquisitor of the Ordo Malleus, I will also require your assistance directly dear sister." Flashing her sister with the slightest hint of a scowl Anna rebutted. "I am needed here, without me this sanctuary would not r..." Before she could finish her comment she met eyes with Krista and knew that something was wrong. Her usual haughty face when dealing with her had disappeared and one that was solemn and grave had replaced it. "If I am to come with you I require more information than this." Nodding Krista sat down, looking into her own reflection on the polished marble table before her she released a sigh and told Anna as everything she could, about the impending threat to the imperium and the possible end to the quadrant as they knew it. After all was spoken, Anna agreed and swiftly marched out to collect the Sisters she would choose to accompany her on this mission. "May the Emperor protect us." She prayed under her breath as she weaved through the halls and connecting foyers that made up the Cathedral. Lord Commander Scrymgeour
personally, I quite like the washed out look, it makes the games feel more gritty and like modern cinema, rather than the technicolour glory of eras past. Sororita Katya
I agree, although I am now edging towards red for the armor...my ETL set was a test paint up of yet another scheme. I just can't get it into my head what I want...though I think red armor with gold outlay is the way to go ahead, with skull cream robes, maybe even black for the superiors. Is the red with white robes to close to an actual order though? That or I was thinking purple and gold, as I've always loved the mix :) ...here I go again *sigh* Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308775-the-order-of-the-calling-mother/#findComment-4136813 Share on other sites
KiwiBen
I'm an advocate of red armour with gold trim and cream/white robes... Although of course I'd say that - because it is exactly the scheme I ended up settling on... Funny enough, I've used quite a lot of purple in my scheme too... It seems you and I have similar colour preferences @Sororita Katya As far as I know, the colour scheme you've described isn't a "fluff official" order... The only "official" red armoured sisters I can think of have black robes (Order of the Bloody Rose). I've called mine the Order of the Gilded Chalice... although in the vastness of the Imperium, it is entirely possible that two minor Orders happened to select the same (or similar) colour scheme! WarriorFish
I like it. Purple is a good colour (the colour of Emperors no less) and goes well with a cream and gold :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308775-the-order-of-the-calling-mother/#findComment-4138318 Share on other sites

Naminé
Gotta say the red really doesn't work for me there. White, gold or cream again might work. The rest of it is good though. *Furyou Miko
This is fairly simplistic, but it's a good introduction to the subject of matching and contrasting and clashing colours; http://www.colormatters.com/color-and-design/basic-color-theory Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308775-the-order-of-the-calling-mother/#findComment-4139159 Share on other sites
KRG-23
I like this outfit. I also like to stay with two colors when it comes to power armors and such. The red would be better if replaced by the gold of the other parts from the armor :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308775-the-order-of-the-calling-mother/#findComment-4139205 Share on other sites
Sororita Katya
I may just opt for white again then, as I want something different to the rest of the armor. I was trying to show more of a dark blood red for the helmet but every shade I picked came out brighter and more pastel than what I had intended. taikishi
To echo what the others said, you either want to do one of the following: * stick with the gold and make the helmet that color * stick with the gold and make the helmet the same color as the rest of the armor * go with the cream like you're thinking * turn the gold to something closer to a yellow-orange and the helm to a yellow-green Small color theory for you: * Analogous colors (those close to each other on a color wheel, like different shades of purple) are good for conveying emotions and moods. Without the yellow/gold, the red wouldn't stand out as much. This nightbringer is an example of an analogous color scheme. * Complementary colors are good for showing contrast as they're opposite colors on a color wheel (green/red, purple/yellow, blue/orange). If you use primarily one color (purple), the other detail (gold) will stand out more. Here is an example of a complementary color scheme. Notice how Nemo stands out in the otherwise blue background. * Split-complements achieve the same thing as a true complement but dilute the color contrast a bit since they replace the complementary color (gold) with two analogous colors (green and orange) to complement the third color (purple). This terminator is painted using split complements. * Triads (red/blue/yellow, green/purple/orange) and tetrads ( ex. red-orange, purple, blue-green, yellow) allow you to show off lots of colors but require you to control the saturation to attract attention to particular elements. Here's an example of miniatures painted in a triad color scheme. There's also the psychology of colors by controling saturation, but what we have above should be enough to help you come up with something you like that 'fits'. One thing you don't want to do, though, is use too many colors. It confuses the message you're trying to convey. For example, this Marine uses every color in the color wheel but has no unifying message while this terminator is using a triad focused around the green.
