Azzagorn
As we all know this hobby ain't cheap. I was wondering whether or not anyone knows of alternative primers that you can buy both in the UK,the US and beyond. Stercus
In the UK, you can't go wrong with a visit to your local branch of halfords. Their white and grey primers are both cheap and excellent. Subtle Discord
I've been using Krylon Duel (paint and primer in one), for a while now here in Canada; not sure of its availability in other regions, however. I'm very happy with the coverage, surface quality, durability, and price (~$6 CAD for a 340g can). GrandMagnus
What I do, is I go to my local paintstore (5 minutes from my house). They have a large selection of spray paints, both matte and shiny and if I need a specific colour they will even create it by blending other colours together. Currently my black and white primers are both from that store and both are for spray painting cars. Believe me, they are wonderful. So I highly recommend going to your local paint store first, just ask them if spray suitable for miniature painting. If they arent able to help you, then you can always go online. PS: Its cheaper. Stercus
I can vouch for the black from Halfords. That's good to know, I've not tried the black yet. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308786-alternative-basecoat-cans/#findComment-4073325 Share on other sites
Brother Galfridus
I can vouch for the black from Halfords. That's good to know, I've not tried the black yet. Halford black is a good colour but not a primer. Autotek grey and white primer is also very good and can be ordered via amazon for those who cannot get to a Halfords Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308786-alternative-basecoat-cans/#findComment-4074163 Share on other sites
Major_Gilbear
In the UK, you want Halfords sandabale primers - they are brilliant. Make sure you buy primer and not paint though. Also, whilst using a primer in a tone or colour that's helpful to your main paint scheme, don't just work off the primer and leave parts of it showing as "finished", because it's not designed for that and will look pretty poor. For example, if you're painting White Scars, then you are likely best off starting with a white or light grey primer - if you start off with a white, you still have to paint a few coats of white paint of the areas that will be white at the end. This is becuase the paint and primer are formulated differently and are designed to be used in combination, and using one without the other will lead to a poor finish. Of course, if you don't mind the finish of bare primer, that's up to you! :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308786-alternative-basecoat-cans/#findComment-4078276 Share on other sites
