Vorax Battle Automata...

So they're a fast attack slot?

They have pretty cool rules, I'm considering them... Models are reasonably priced... Despite being so ugly :-/ lol

They're in book 3 as part of the Taghmata Omnissiah.

Apparently you can take them as a Fast Attack slot without needing to ally in Mechanicus?

Just need a Cortex Controller Equipped HQ choice and you should be a-ok to take them in FA. Or, as MoM said above, with a Praevian who also has a Cortex Controller meaning you could take them as a Retinue and Fast Attack.

Yeah, the only reason I took notice is because I'll be running a Forge Lord as my HQ...

Are they any good? They are pretty quick but I can imagine they'd get gunned down pretty quick...

If you're running them with a Praevian (and thus gain Legion Astartes - though only the ones hes stuck with) they can be pretty brutal. Consider that an RG Praevian will give them Infiltrate and Fleet...

With UM Tactics, its pretty meh although they are now eligible to gain the Special Rules from Guilliman and the RoW (I think?)

Other than that, you'd probably be better served by Castellax.

Sorry to be a pain, please can you tell me if there's there a specific written entry that says these can be fielded as part of the Cortex Controller entry for Forge Lords and Praevians in the book?  Surely makes for an interesting option if so.

What's their intended targets of choice.. anti troop, anti tank, anti spartan, anti super heavy or ?

Thanks :)

Look up their Entries in LA:CAL. ex Pg. 78 and 79 for Thallax and Castellax:

-Optional Heavy Support: This unit may only be included in the army under certain provisions - see the Cotex Controller pg 89.

Meaning, they can only be taken if you have a Forge Lord (or other HQ) Equipped with a Cortex Controller which Negates the Programmed Behavior Special Rule if within 12".

Does a Cortex controller work from inside a vehicle?

I can't decide if I should invest in 3 Vorax to run behind my Landraider or get some Cataphractii to ride inside a Storm Eagle...

I don't like holding too many points in reserve, but I also feel it's a waste not to utilise the Storm Eagle (a very points effective flyer when compared to the Xiphon)

I'd say no since most other auras dont work from inside a Vehicle too.

Praevian rules under "Master of Cybernetica" say that you may not give your battle-automata the 'Paragon of Metal' upgrade.  As per FW's download page for Narik.

AFAIK, thats only for the ones taken as a Retinue. If a Forgelord takes a squad in their respective slot I think they can still take PoM

I'd be taking them as a seperate fast attack option, and am unlocking them through a Forge Lord.

I think they would actually function quite well in my list as I have lots of ranged fire, and they'd serve as a secondary assaulting unit advancing with my Rhinos and Landraider...

I'm more interested in Castellax but my heavy slots are all spoken for...

Just beware Programmed Behavior!

Methodical: No Sweeping or Running

Target Priority: Must fire all weapons at the closest enemy within 12" otherwise shoot as normal (note they must be able to harm the target for this to apply should it ever be relevant)

Onslaught: Same as Target Priority but with Assault.

Fire Protocols: May fire up to 3 of its weapons once each in the shooting phase - must be vs the same target.

Oh, Btw, Paragon of Metal is only available if the Maniple numbers no more than 1 (one) automata.

I am still struggling to find any reference in the books that allows you to take Vorax as a legion unit. In book 2 and 3 the cortex controller section for legion rules only mention being able to take Castellax and Thallax as heavy support. Can anyone find a non battlescribe reference for allowing them?

Apparently they were added in book 4, which was released after the Crusade Army list, but I don't know anyone who owns conquest!

225 points for a unit of 3 Monstrous Creatures is pretty darn good, and like I said - the FW price is very reasonable. Lol I can't believe I'm potentially making decisions based on price... Such is the way of Forgeworld!

*Edit*

I've actually just emailed Forgeworld to clarify if a Cortex Controller works from inside a transport...

Also, I would appreciate if someone can actually confirm that they are eligible for legion lists via a Forge Lord with Cortex Controller....

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Upon further Review, looks like only a Praevian can take Vorax as an Additional Unit that he must be glued to and cannot be taken as fast attack for a Legion list with a Cortex'd HQ.

Looking at LA:CAL, the only mechanicum Units present in there are Thallax and Castellax, both of which can be taken by a Cortex'd HQ unlike the Vorax (who, for the record were added in Book 3) who do not appear in that section.

Nor do they appear in any other books "Optional Heavy Support" within which the Thallax and Castellax do.
