Question about allies in HH.

I am just starting my hh legion and have started to drool over some of the mechanicum models and wondered how common is it to have allies, and is it some thing like 40k where it can be frowned upon ?

I have a small Death Guard force starting and would love a small mechanicum detachment with it.  I am in love with, and got a Thanatar (with the giant shoulder rocket launcher) and am dying to find a way to use it.

So is allies in 30k a normal thing, or is it some thing that needs to be discussed before the game ?  How would you feel if you were set to play a game and your opponent was playing with allies ?

100% Ok and I have never seen anyone frown upon allies, in HH you do have to follow the allies chart though. Some legions hate Mech others like Iron Hands love them and its actually fluffy to play them as allies. Go crazy with it man just remember to follow the chart found in the red books.

Allies depends on your local meta; if people you play with like playing with allies then its fine, if not, not.

As was mentioned, certain armies have different status with mechanicum so it could varies; Death Guard iirc have a good ally status.

You can also take thallax and castellax as part of your Legion list if you take a model with a Cortex Controller, get castellax or vorax with a praevian, or include them with the Iron Hands Rite of War.

Are you sure on that? I'm sure I've read that you can field castellax as compulsory troops specifically for a Legio Cybernetica list, not the others. I know 1d4chan still believes so, but I'll check what limited rule books I have later. Of course knowing my luck they've changed it or I've been completely misreading it. Cheers.

SkimaskMohawk, thanks for your reply.

I still only have access to the first two books and have seen the Crusade red book now, so I don't have full knowledge about what they did with all the new units. Sorry to flog a dead tank, but back to that other site 1d4, are they incorrect in listing the Thanatar Siege Automata as an optional Heavy Support for the LC list then? I can also see that Forge World's website entry and pdf rules have the newer Thanatar-Calix model specifically as an available Heavy Support in Legio Cybernetica, but obviously that's not the plasma model in question and only experimental rules.

Not allowing me to field a small allies contingent of Castellax and plasma Thanatars really puts a stumper on me getting that model now. So I'm really interested in getting to the bottom of this, I'd be happy to take the chat to private if the OP wishes smile.png

Death Guard are fine with mechanicum.  I would definitely go the cheapest way points wise, a magos, a thallax cohort, and then the thanatar.  My Death Guard aren't so much slaves to tactics as they are slaves to fashion, a shiny thanatar strutting the back line can really boost morale.

As for the local meta, it is still pretty new, I think there are only a hand full, and a few starting to build.  By the time I have enough to field a 30k list hopefully more will start up. As for people not wanting to play with allies, not much I can do about that hopefully there will be more players that wont care, or will have allies of their own.

@infyrana use this thread, I too wouldn't mind knowing, would also rather have a castallax instead of the thallax.

I'm incredibly sorry. Here's whats up; the thanatar is naturally missing from the Legio Cybernetica list as it was released later, but in the preface to the Taghmata list it says its transferred over to the Cybernetica one. Shows me for not going to bed until 9am....

@OP "slaves to fashion"-  death guard let their armour get mangled aesthetically lol. As for the allies thing, people probably won't care as much in 30k since the system is fairly rigid and much less toxic then 40k. One thing to note is Battle Brothers can't ride in each others transports

Skimask, not a problem at all!  As long as we end in the right place :)  Just means my wallet will eventually hate me when my sensibility gives way to desire.

1000sons, I'm a sucker for walkers, hence why my Death Guard have a Praevian with Castellax, and that I've also thought about the LegCyb list for the Thanatar.  I think with the Forge Lord and Praevian, it's made the integration of these two armies very easily palpable in terms of having allies.  Especially when FW puts out bulletin #62 on their website with a DG painted force of Mechanicum allies!  What more 'acceptance' can you get than that ?

Here's the thing about acceptance, it wholly depends on the perception of the people you play against and not on what the company pushes. My friends and I loved 5th, the allies system was interesting at first until it became obvious that it was used to just to make the most brutal combos. This got even worse in 7th and you can see it in some large tournaments where some people don't have a cohesive army, but a collection of the very best units. We ban all allies (even the fluffy fun ones) just to make sure we play with armies and to avoid being biased (why is x allowed when y is banned).

As I said earlier, 30k is better for this as it never breaks immersion (no tau/nid/knight army to be seen) and only really used to get more mechanicum
