Kriegs Armour Goodness

Recommended Posts

Hey all I have a bunch of Imperial Guard Armoured Vehicles that I've collected over the years. After I looked at the other tanks in the forum I decided to dust off my vehicles and work on them hopefully finishing them. I love the idea of fielding an Armoured force so I also bought Forgeworlds second edition of Imperial Armour volume One and this is a list of what I have so far:

Chimera w/ Autocannon turret(forgeworld) & Multilaser turret

Hellhound

Devil Dog

Leman Russ w/ Battle Cannon and Heavy Bolter sponsons(old tank so they're glued in)

Leman Russ Punisher w/ interchangeable sponson weapons

Leman Russ Exterminator w/ interchangeable sponson weapons

Manticore

I have the parts to make a Hydra I bought from forgeworld but have to deal with warping and fitting issues. I also have a spare battle cannon turret I bought from forgeworld as well.

Couple of questions

1) Is this a good start for a force?

2)Is the second edition IA book still usable in 7th edition? Also do I still need the Astra Militarum book with it?

3)This pic shows my Chimera. Still needs work I have to work on the rivets with Strong Tone ink. Also shading and weathering and all that fun stuff. I like the look but I'm on the fence about adding camo or keeping it green and just weathering. Any thoughts?

Thanks for viewing any help would be great. smile.png

Yes the imperial armour book is compatible with the new guard dex however the costs of the vehicles are the same as the old guard dex. Your list looks fun though you don't have anti air so I would try to get that hydra fixed up. Also you could always give the manticore the sky eagle missles.

I like the chimera, I can't wait to see more!

Thanks guys here's my force so far.

I don't know what I'm going to do with the Hydra. I'm having problems with the pieces fitting. There's a gap on the top piece and when the back piece is even with the chassis the top piece extends over the hatch area. Anyone else dealt with this?

Also there's a hole below the back piece. I tried out both parts(the Chimera extension and a piece that angles up) that attach to the floor but they don't match up.

Does it look like I have to go the plasticard route? I have some sheets here if I have to.

Thanks

Thanks Ulrik. As far as Infantry goes I haven't thought that far. Would a force of only tanks be a bad thing? I'm sure I have a bunch of Guards lying around but was hoping to just stick with the tanks. I didn't think a Chimera would have to have troops in order to be fielded. Was hoping to just include it as a mobile Autocannon.

I believe troops are the only way to get a Chimera. You could always go the Veteran route and load up two Chimeras' worth of troops. Make them Grenadiers and off they go!

You seem to have some red showing through on that one Chimera. Boys in the Motor Pool got lazy and you made them repaint it, didn't you? You'll fit in nicely around here, then biggrin.png.

On the topic of the Hydra, I believe Commissar Elmo was the last one to make the kit. Maybe ask him about it.

Thanks Mehman I checked the book and there's three uses of the Chimera:

Armoured Fist Squad

Armoured Fist Veterans

Dedicated Transport

Under the first two there's list and stats for Guardsmen. This mean I don't need the Codex and can use this book on it's own? Just need the Rulebook with it?

The red was the old Primer I put on it when I was making a Traitor Guard Force. That went nowhere so repurposed it for the GUard. That's why there's also the remains of Chaos plates on the side and front. lol I wasn't too kind to the bugger. :P

Yeah i'm thinking of using that list. I bought the book so might as well try to get some use out of it besides some good fluff and pretty pictures. smile.png

I do have Guard infantry around just have to find them.

Edit: What does bubblewrap mean? Is that a fancy way of saying the infantry is gonna pop easy?

Basically you wrap the armored vehicles in infantry, protecting them as if covered in bubblewrap. I'd take a standard guard CAD, with tank commanders, and a couple of min mechanised platoons, and add conscripts and commissars so you can screen your tanks, while the mech squads capture objectives. Conscripts are cheap ablative wounds at 3ppm.

Ulrik's got the right of it. Don't know why I didn't comment on this earlier...a man's mind will wander, eh? On paper and in thought, an all tank list just feels right. In reality, you run the chance of enemy squishies attacking your flanks and just messing up the battlefield with all sorts of new-fangled firing lanes. If those enemies are locked in combat then you suddenly have a chance to take out that CO or get to an objective.

After discussing With March10k, I learned that there is no pure armored forces left in the US Army, we went to a completely combined arms structure, at a much lower organizational level. An Armored Brigade might have a Battalion of Cavalry (Mechanized scouts), a Mechanized infantry Battalion, and 2 Armored Battalions, where as in a Mech Infantry Brigade you'd have a Cav Batt, and 2 Batts of Mech infantry and 1 Armored Batt. In real life, tanks protect the infantry, but in 40k it's usually the other way around. As infantry is usually your best way of killing tanks. Either way, you should have some infantry, melta vets in a chimera work wonders. Mine nearly took down a monolith the other day ( I say nearly, because 2 hit and failed to pen, the other missed, but a second turn might have given them the opportunity to deal a death blow to the bloody thing).
