Yesterday afternoon I finally finished painting the first Imperial Knight of my custom house, House Cenwulf, using the Iron Knight wolf head:

This guy is going to be the first of a companion army for my Space Wolves and will see his first tabletop action allied to my Great Company. His scheme is reversed from that of the rest of the knights who will be grey with white details, as the Seneschal and High King of his house I wanted this guy to be different. So here is Thorvald Cenwulf the White Wolf, High King of House Cenwulf:

I had a lot of fun adding extra details to this guy. The extra knight faceplates about his waist, the knight head at his feet, the reaper blade attached beneath his melta weapon, the skull atop the barrels. I even added a wolf head to the front of the rocket pod atop his back. The claws on his fist are from the 2nd edition dozer blade kit for the old Space Marine tanks. I even added a length of chain to his groin plate from the chaos terminator lord kit.

I'm not entirely happy with the painted details. I think his personal icon representing the spirit wolf howling at the moon came out far better than I had hoped but other icons around his greaves and shoulders I'm not so sure about. I had intended to add more grey to balance out the white than I ultimately did including the decision not to paint the Seneschal stripe down the center of his back carapace. There is a lot of space on the shoulder pads and I could, maybe should have gone with the codex outlined half aquilas on the opposite halves of the shoulder plates. I can always add more later I suppose and doing the white was a real pain. It looks relatively clean from a distance but up close it's not nearly so smooth (texture wise) with lots of streaking and brush strokes visible and I was constantly having to patch and repair the white. Fortunately the rest of the knights I plan to build won't be using the same scheme.

So lemme know what you guys think!

Thanks for the comments guys, can't wait to get this guy on the tabletop and toss some things with his gauntlet!

I love the skull on the Thermal Cannon. What creature is that?

It's a banner top from the Ogre Kingdoms Fantasy range. I got it from hoardobits a while back. The Ogre Kingdoms range has a wealth of snagable skulls, jawbones and other goodies for Space Wolf conversions.

Nice use of non 40k bits! Did you create any fluff for it and how the knight obtained it?

I actually hadn't thought about it, I just figured it looked cool! But yea, it's certainly something he killed at some point. Here's the background on House Cenwulf I've cobbled together so far:

House Cenwulf

House Cenwulf is an ancient though small house of Imperial Knights based on the Knight World of Canis Minoris. Located within just a few days warp travel from the Fenris system the world of Canis Minoris was one of the first brought into the burgeoning Imperium during the Great Crusade by the newly rediscovered Primarch Leman Russ and the Space Wolves Legion. Since that time House Cenwulf and the VI Legion have been close allies, fighting alongside each other in countless campaigns. During the later years of the Great Crusade the knights of House Cenwulf stood as one of the most numerous and powerful knightly houses fighting on the front lines of the expanding Imperium, standing at over two hundred knights strong with alliances to half a dozen other houses in their home system House Cenwulf was rightly renowned, feared and respected in equal measure. The Canis system counted four knight worlds and the newly established Forge World of Ultraxis. House Cenwulf and its client houses swore oaths of allegiance to the Adeptus Mechanicus and received great rewards in the form of technology and resources. It seemed as though House Cenwulf would soon come to stand alongside House Raven and House Taranis as the most renowned and powerful of the Mechanicus aligned knight houses.

The Horus Heresy brought House Cenwulf's rising star to a sudden halt and nearly extinguished it altogether. Even as news of Horus' treachery and the disaster at Istvaan V was spreading across the Imperium like wildfire and the ruinstorm cut off travel the home of House Cenwulf came under sudden and ferocious attack. Elements of the Iron Warriors and Dark Mechanicus laid siege to Canis Minoris and its neighbors, using ancient and terrible weapons long restricted at the highest levels of the Imperium. Rad, phosphex and life-eater weapons were all deployed. Millions died, whole continents and even worlds were left burnt and dead. Just before the attack House Cenwulf and its oathsworn houses were carrying out orders from the Warmaster to conduct repairs and resupply prior to redeployment. None could have conceived that the Warmaster's orders were designed to position the loyal knights for extermination. The loyalist knights and their retainers fought with all the skill and fury that had served them so well on the front lines of the Great Crusade but the enemy had the advantage of numbers, firepower and surprise. Scores of knights were cut down and one by one the client houses were annihilated until only House Cenwulf remained. Even Ultraxis burned, it's forges flattened from orbit and its orbital refineries plundered. In the end it was only orders to recall the traitor forces that saved House Cenwulf. Reduced to a few dozen surviving knights and completely cut-off from support the Warmaster chose not to waste any more time rooting out the remaining nobles from their last bastions. The lords of House Cenwulf would live to fight another day, much to their shame and regret.

In the years following the Horus Heresy the survivors of House Cenwulf licked their wounds and worked to rebuild. The Canis system was ruined almost beyond repair, every world aside from Canis Minoris, the homeworld of the house, had been left uninhabitable. Canis Minoris only survived thanks to the potent void shields protecting its mightiest citadels and even then all but one had been broken open and scoured of life by the relentless Iron Warriors. Ultraxis was beyond saving, it's survivors numbering in their hundreds. The Mechanicus salvaged what they could and departed, leaving House Cenwulf to fend for itself. The oaths of allegiance to the Mechanicus were made void and House Cenwulf swore its allegiance anew to the Imperium alone. In doing so the house abandoned most of the colors and iconography standard to the knightly houses and re-adopted their former heraldry. A simplified house crest was established and many traditions that had fallen by the wayside were taken up again with fresh fervor. The nobles of House Cenwulf garnered strength from their heritage.

Despite the strength and determination of House Cenwulf's nobles the house might still have died out had not the Space Wolves offered support. Iron Priests and bondsmen helped House Cenwulf rebuild and repair and Space Wolves vessels transported the houses' knights to distant battlefields, giving the shamed nobles a chance to vent their fury against the hated traitors. In time House Cenwulf recovered a portion of their strength, new ships were acquired, new Sacristans trained, new alliances forged, and new supply chains established.

Though identified as an Imperial aligned knightly house the lords of Canis Minoris follow an odd hybrid organization, mixing titles, positions and duties commonly associated with both Imperial and Mechanicus aligned houses as well as utilizing a highly unorthodox array of armor colors, markings and designations. In total House Cenwulf stands at just forty two Knights strong, a modest power in the Segmentum Obscurus but a power greatly respected and feared by ally and enemy alike. Though few in number the lords of House Cenwulf have access to a wide variety of ancient models of Knight Suits including Cerastus knights, and even a handful of incredibly rare Questoris knights whose origins are perhaps best left to mystery.

To the last the people of Canis Minoris are proud, taciturn, direct and aggressive. Though this attitude has made the warriors of House Cenwulf and their servants unpopular amongst many elements of the Imperium's government and military it has also earned the house many strong allies.

Cracking Model,

I am new to the Wolves, and i have just bought the parts from the same company to built my Iron Wolf.

I went for the Head, Gun, Shoulder Pads and Claw.

I love the white, having came from painting Imperial Fists i know how much of a stress yellow was and white is the same.

Very well done

Cool, I look forward to seeing pics of your knight when it's finished!

Awesome conversion!
Yes, working in white is always a hassle (...especially on the old metal models *remembers Gandalf and shivers*)
But generally, from a little distance, it looks perfectly fine. It looks very regal and knight-ish.
Are all your Space Wolves white and black or is he something special?
The additional wolf-y details, the skull, the different knight-heads and the added chainsword are perfect for a Space Wolves aligned Imperial Knight!

I'm planning to build one, in the long run, too.
Which Plastic-quality did you buy for the head (if you bought it at shapeways)? Frosted UItra Detail or Frosted Extreme Detail?
The Details on the head look perfectly fine, to me.
