morroccomole
So I have 30 scions in varying states of assembled-ness, and before I proceeded, I was curious what direction I wanted to take them in. I remember thumbing through the Scion dex, and seeing things like the Iotan Gryphonnes, Betic Centaurs, etc. I wanted to use that Greek alphabet theme, and do something relating to Theta. Any info about Scion units would be helpful. I understand they are a relatively new addition (and heresy for older stormtrooper players!) As an aside, I'm taking a trigonometry class at the moment, and the professor brought up a neat factoid about how the symbol theta, used for representing angles, was used in ancient times to represent death. I thought it dovetailed nicely with my hobby Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308982-fluff-questions-about-scions/ Share on other sites
Gunmonkey88
That's a pretty cool connection, sounds perfect for use in the Scions. They are new and, as referenced, replaced stormtroopers as the elite soldiers of the Guard. They are not technically part of the Astra Militarum but are instad from the Militarum Tempestus though they are often attached to IG regiments. They all come from the elite orphanages of the Imperium and begin training as children and join as Scions once they reach adulthood. They're equipped with the best weapons and equipment the Imperium can offer short of what is supplied to the space marines themselves. Apparently, this includes medieval breastplates but I digress. That's the short and sweet version, I suggest you thumb through their codex for more that the paragraph or two that's present in the IG codex. Ulrik_Ironfist
I think they're pretty much the same as the old stormtrooper regiments. Stormtroopers: http://i81.servimg.com/u/f81/14/21/13/19/m1251710.jpg Scions: http://www.crittohit.com/imagestore/articles/5371/Tempestus-Scions.jpg Kasrkin: http://i81.servimg.com/u/f81/14/21/13/19/m1241810.jpg I have Scions, and Kasrkin as my army, I might get some of the old 5E metal Stormtroopers just to have 3 different kinds in my army. morroccomole
I'm worried about calling them "Thetans," as there is that organization-that-shall-not-be-named that uses the moniker haha. Ulrik_Ironfist
You could use thetic instead of thetan, since Betic is used and the Demonym for Beta would be Betan... captain sox
The beauty of the hobby is you can make your own fluff. It doesn't really need to follow any sort of rules I think, since this is all make believe after all. My Scion army was recruited by the Dark Angels to aid in eradicating the Fallen, etc. Basically, Belial and Azreal appeared at an Scion training facility and said: http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a496/Odogg242/dff0d0d2-0ee0-4590-a90f-d686299d0c7e_zpswqhexc18.jpg The rest is History. The Crusade of Redemption was born. Scions, Terminators and Knights, oh my! Ulrik_Ironfist
My "Scions" are brought up on a rugged fortified world, in the Eastern fringe. They're trained far better than the Schola trains stormtroopers, as the rugged wilds of their world are their classroom. Basically they spend their entire lives in a maddening combination of SERE, Ranger School, BUD/S, SF Q-course, Operator School, SQT, and every day is like boot camp. Where in basic you'd be going to classes about military knowledge, they're learning science, math, language, philosophy, literature, and art. This is all in addition to being trained in military drill and ceremonies, and combat training. This isn't to say they're all orphans though, they do have homes and parents, and their training starts when they're 6 or so, and intensifies when they turn 12. Secondary schooling is when they go through the tough training. That's my fluff anyway, pretty similar to the Kasrkin really. I'd really like to get some of the 5e metal Stormies. Ascanius
There are already two canon theta regiments: 22nd Thetoid Gryphonnes - from a high-gravity world so they run faster and tune their vehicles for speed. 32nd Thetoid Eagles - secretive and vicious. Obviously, nothing stops you from creating your own regiment, although I suppose "Thetoid" is the "correct" appellation rather than "Thetan" or "Thetic". Nothing is stopping him from using thetan (except those wackos that worship science fiction...) or thetic, since none of it is technically correct... WarriorFish
The lore is flexible enough, so you can create your own easily enough. Scions is just the fancy new Latiny name for Stormtroopers, much like Astra Militarum :) You can also have a Stormtrooper like regiment with equal training for example - the galaxy is your oyster :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308982-fluff-questions-about-scions/#findComment-4078179 Share on other sites

If it sounds cool it's high gothic and if it's a little different it's low gothic or some offshoot of high gothic? Bit like there's dialects of English in the UK. I have a hard time understanding some strong Glaswegian or Scouse or Brummy or Oldham accents. All speaking English but sound like completely different languages. If your speaking to people from different parts of the USA you'll find they sound completely different. It's the same wherever you go. Ascanius
Well, obviously! I was just pointing out that there was already an "established" adjective based on "theta" for the OP to use. Not saying it's a rule, just saying "This is the precedent." Vel'Cona
My Cadians don't have any Scions (Kasrkin?) because the CC is a cheapskate. We do have plenty of tanks, though . . . Father Mehman
Are we all forgetting that the first word is the regiment's home planet? I'll give some examples because I can: 23rd Cetan Dire Wolves (it sounds like "Satan" so it must be cool, right ?) 34th Drustian Boars 7th Cnaeus IV Satyrs 93rd Gaian Golems So, Mole, go ahead and make up a planet named Theta! Maybe put some numbers behind it but go for it ! Master Antaeus
Just attach a cool and aggressive-sounding animal/military name to your Thetic designation: Thetic Tigers - tiger striped camo Thetic Honey Badgers - troll face on respmask Thetic Myrmidons - ancient warriors who fought at Troy Thetic Janissaries - elite Turkish troops Thetic Warshrikes - mortis ex alta! Thetic Wolves - plenty of wolf tails and pelts floating around with which to festoon your scions. Personally, I prefer the idea of hopped up grenadiers and super veterans, so I went with the 808th Merican Fusiliers. From 'Murica! I even decided they hated pilgrims to parallel the average American's opinion of illegal immigrants. Stupid pilgrims, coming to our worlds and taking our jobs, eating up our welfare, and driving up our medical costs... Who do they think they are...? That's actually hilarious Anteus (Though, honestly, why shouldn't you dislike illegal immigrants, the broke the law to get here... if you want to debate that, PM, I'll not start that political discussion here).
