Please help me get started

So i was going through my model collection and i really wanted to make an army that has always intrigued me, the Grey Knights. I just love there lore and the look of the models and i will say im more of a painter rather than a hardcore gamer, but i do like to play a few games if i ever get some time to go down to my local GW. Now when it comes to Grey Knights i only have a squad of 5 purifiers that i have painted up and i really love how they look. Now im looking for some new models to buy and start formulating some sort of basic 1000-1500 point army. I want to get at least a decent 1000 point army together before i start looking at Assassins and inquisitors to add to make it really competative. I have got the 7th codex and i love it, i love the lore and love the rules so thats what i want to focus on right now is just to get a little pure GK army put together. Now i am mainly a fantasy player so im not super clued up on the 40k side but i have read the rules and know the basics. So i was just wondering if you more veteran players had some reccomendations for me on what i should buy next. I already know i am going to get the terminator box because well i dont think ive ever seen a GK army without at least 1 squad of them in there lol. But should i make the termies or should i buy Draigo and make a lovely squad of Paladins. Another model that i really like the look of are the normal Dreadnaughts and the big Grey Knight DreadKnight, but i think i will leave that for untill i have a bit more time to paint it as its quiet big and i do spend a lot of time and effort on my models when painting them. So a box of paladins and Draigo or a box of Termies and a dreadnaught? All help appreciated :)

The common wisdom is that GK dreadnoughts aren't great, mostly because we don't have drop pods or iron-clads, and pay too many points for the bonuses they get over normal dreadnoughts.  Draigo and paladins is a decent deathstar, but it becomes a very expensive squad.  Termies will get you a troops choice, so you're a battleforged list sooner. You'll also want an HQ of some sort (Draigo is a Lord of War), probably a librarian.  There isn't an actual Grey Knight librarian, so people usually convert them from either a Space Marine terminator librarian or from a spare Grey Knights terminator.

Contents from terminator boxes help you build everything from GrandMasters w/psycannons to Librarians too. If you don't want to "lose terminators" you can grab cheap pushfit DA terminator models, shave off iconography and GK'ify with spare bits from the terminator boxes.

Wow thanks for all the great reactions, this seems like a very helpful and friendly sub forum smile.png So yeah im definately going to get a box of terminators, and i will get a normal Terminator Librarian for a HQ choice, i love the look of the model as well. I think the first box i buy i will make into terminators and the second box when i make it i will convert it to paladins, once again i love the look of the models. I am also seriously considering buying a Dreadknight but it hass been a very very long time since i built up and painted a larger model, so its kinda daunting lol. I dont rush my paintjobs as i said and i really do spend a lot of time on each individual models to make them look as awesome as they possibly can. My next question is, for a beginner to 40k (not tabletop wargaming) Would a pure Grey Knight army be ok? I mean i have heard its a fairly straight forward army with relatively low model counts but this scares me because i dont really fancy going to my local GW and having some 12 year old blow me away in 2 turns lol. Also sorry for being a complete noob but model conversions do interest me so what are 'cheap push fit DA models' lol...

A pure GK army does perfectly well as long as your local gaming group isn't too competitive. Even in a semi-competitive environment you should be fine with RD's buylist as long as noone fields a tailored army (an army-list specifically built to take on certain armies).

I would suggest a little change regarding the buylist - I would change a 10man Strike Squad box to another terminator box. As long as you magnetize the Strike Squads backpacks you can field them as Purifiers and Interceptors and 10 should be enough to start with. Terminators are a bit more competitive and cost effective too.

Ok thanks for the help! I do think magnetizing different equipment is going a bit too hardcore for me lol, also im not too sure what my local GW is like im pretty sure they will have beginner nights or something so i might go to one of them sometimes, but i am gonna go to the store tommorow and find out some more info. I think tommorow i will buy a box of Terminators and see how i get on with them. Another model that really interests me is Castellan Crowe, i just think the model looks amazing. However i dont think i have ever seen a GK list with him in it so im guessing he isnt that great? I might just buy him anyways because of how much i love the model !

Magnetizing backpacks is very easy. Just ask for some advice regarding the magnetizing and I'm sure they can show you an easy way to do it.

Castellan Crowe is... ok I would say. Some would say he is abyssmal but I absolutely don't thinks thats true. He knows Cleansing Flame and he is an absolute beast in challenges but many write him off because he lacks a proper weapon outside of challenges and he is very expensive for what he does. I would never play him in an even remotely competitive list but in casual games your opponents might even learn to fear him as he can actually go toe to toe with some of the most fearsome close combat monsters in the game and beat the holy snot out of them. Feel free to take advantage of that. You might want to consider a Stormraven as delivery system for Crow though - just to be save.

Yeah at the end of the day im not looking to win tournaments lol i love characters in war games and was the main reason that i wanted to get Draigo. I just think having a named character in your army is so much more fun than simply getting a generic librarian as your HQ choice. Mabey i will just field a unit of Purifiers with Crowe just for the fun of it! But the main reason like i said is the model it just looks so damna wesome and i can really see myself having a great time painting him up.

Hehe I'm the total opposite - I hate having named characters in my army cuz I'm a bit of a fluff-nazi and I can't make up a good reason why any legendary character would attend my 1500 points of GKs (a very small strike force for GKs) so I spin my own fluff around my army. All my GK brothers and units are named and have a little fluff behind them. You see it works either way :)

So what makes Crowe such a monster in close combat and duels. I saw he gets to use two stances and that he has a smash special rule? As I'm a bit rusty on the rules I'm guessing smash is good against characters/monstrous creatures? I kinda like the idea of a character that people wouldn't really worry about at first until it's too late and he's wrecking face :)
