Starting 30k - An Appeal to the Veterans

Hey there!

I've been out of the hobby as a whole for a few years now, but then the Mechanicum releases started, and well.. I can now finally play my favourite faction in the universe! I absolutely adore AdMech and their lore, and I've been trying to craft a narrative for my own Explorator Fleet/Forge World for some time. I've come across the insanely customisable awesomeness that is the Imperial Militia and Cults list, which I'm hoping to ally with a Taghmata army (or perhaps the other way around).

Fluff choices aside, I was hoping for some advice of a good selection of models to get started with. I already have a medium sized Imperial guard army (1000pts roughly, I think) which gets me some guardsmen and a few tanks to use as Militia; everything else I'll be buying piecemeal. Can you recommend a good Mechanicum core to start with? One of my main concern is the high number of Castellax and Thanatars I see in the army lists posted around the internet. Do they really outshine all the other list choices? I was hoping Vorax would be viable, but I don't see much love for them.

Also, any thoughts on the Imperial Militia list would be stellar, though I appreciate it's only been released very recently.

Thanks in advance smile.png

For Militia get Survivors of the Dark Age, and Abhuman Helots. Get a Platoon Command Cadre give them a Land Raider Proteus, get two maxed Grenadier Squads with 2 guys taking grenade launchers with gas grenades. That's 40 Grenadiers that you then put into a Gorgon. So with that you get baby space marines that are BS4, +1T,  +1S to their las weapons 3+ armor saves all in a super heavy transport, what!?, yeah all for on or around 1000 points +/- a few. AND a Land Raider! You could even pay a few points more for them to be Stubborn.

As for Vorax I'm sure people will start using them more now that regular humans are in the mix your local meta may start to change if you start to play Militia.

For me;

Force Commander; Planetary Overlord, Merchant Princeling; Alchem Jackers = 105pts

Discipline Master Cadre, 3 Discipline Masters = 60pts

Enginseer Auxilia, +4 Additional Servo-Automata, 8 Phased Plasma-Fusils = 165pts (upgraded)

Enginseer Auxilia, +4 Additional Servo-Automata, 8 Phased Plasma-Fusils = 165pts

Enginseer Auxilia, +4 Additional Servo-Automata, 8 Phased Plasma-Fusils = 165pts

Enginseer Auxilia, +4 Additional Servo-Automata, 8 Phased Plasma-Fusils = 165pts

Imperialis Militia Grenadier Squad, 8 Additional Grenadiers, Laslocks, 2 Rotor Cannons, Advanced Weapons, Vexilla = 145pts

Imperialis Militia Grenadier Squad, 8 Additional Grenadiers, Laslocks, 2 Rotor Cannons, Advanced Weapons, Vexilla = 145pts

Imperialis Auxilia Sentinel Scout Squadron, 2 Lascannon, 1 Missile Launcher = 115pts

Imperialis Auxilia Sentinel Scout Squadron, 3 Missile Launchers = 105pts

Imperialis Auxilia Sentinel Scout Squadron = 90pts

Aquila Bastion, Ammo Store, Void Shield = 575pts

= 2000pts

You reserve outflank the Sentinels and bring them on to cause havoc with enemy light-medium armour, while your S5 Laslocks (Assault 1, 18" weapons) make a right royal mess of anything on foot especially with S4 Rotor Cannon. The Aquila Cannon brings you the ability to fire Strength D shots or huge quake shots. Your Enginseers are spitting out 24 Ap3 S6 shots a turn, (one of them upgraded to AP2; if no Terminators are present, Marcher Lord and put them on an objective for Stubborn). The Discipline Masters can either go in the Enginseer Squads to reroll Ld 9, or the Grenadiers.

Nice and simple, combines some Mechanicum Squads with some infantry. Might struggle slightly with lots of fast heavy armour or dreadnought spam, but that's usually rare in 30k.

Hi Ario! From your post, it sounds like the underlying reason for your army choice is how much you love the Adeptus Mechanicus. For that reason alone, I'd suggest you don't dilute what you buy with subjective views about 'competitiveness'. That way lies eventual dissatisfaction with what you've got, rather than an army of which you're proud even when it's off the table. What I'm getting at is that if you like Vorax, buy Vorax. Create your army as your Forgeworld would have it. If you want a 'game reason' for the choice, then remember the advantage of surprise. Taking a little-used unit can wrongfoot or distract the other player while they work out how it poses a threat.

Almost everything in the list has a place (even if it's not optimal), and a well-loved model shines in and out of the game. :)

In any case, I suspect that the relatively high number of Thanatar and Castellax, has more to do with the simple fact they were released before the Vorax (and thus were more available) than any inherent game advantage.

Regarding the Imperial militia list, I'd urge you to take the cyber-enhancements for your troops. Not only is it the obvious background choice for a skitarii force, but a 6+ invulnerable is much better than the standard save, which would be ignored by most Age of Darkness forces. As an Imperial Guard player, you'll already be familiar with the 'quantity over quality' adage, so remember that you don't have to give everything two upgrades – just stick with one and simply have more!

Thanks for all your input so far :)

I love your post especially, Apologist. I definitely want to avoid collecting an army that is competitive, but that I have no love for. I was just concerned that a fluffy, unorthodox list would be trounced repeatedly in games, which slightly reduces enjoyment of the hobby :p I'm eager to use Vorax due to their ability to Outflank and attack squishy backfield units.

I see that the Plasma Enginseer squad with AP2 weapons was picked up by other people. The Merchant Princeling trait does seem insanely good in some combinations, especially since Sworn Brothers (Mechanicum) can use the Warlord trait too if Cyber-augmetics are purchased.

What about flyers in 30k? I left the hobby before they were added to the regular 40k game, so I've never actually fought one or used one. I was considering using a Lightning Strike Fighter for tank-hunting/dogfighting. Will I see a lot of flyers around in 30k typically?
