sponsra
Hope this is the right forum for this post, it´s been a while :) I had a discussion about sci-fi and fantasy fiction with a coworker the other day. Turns out she´s a huge sci-fi buff and seem really well read (way more than me anyway). She's borrowing som HH books from me and wants to get into it, but the thing is she´s completely unfamiliar with the whole setting, never read anything related to GW and Black Library. So now I´m thinking, should I give her some background or something before she digs into the books or should I just give her Horus Rising and hope for the best? Thanks :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/309071-friend-to-start-reading-te-hh-books/ Share on other sites
Grotsmasha
We've had a similar situation before, and it is a rare gift indeed to experience The Heresy without the fore-knowledge of who lives and dies, who wins and looses. infyrana
I'm tainted by my existing knowledge. I'd say let her read from the HH books at the beginning, and in timeline fashion. You could brief her on the overall backdrop, but just how much you try to give out will be the issue. So might be better letting her find out alone, remember the wikis are always there. I have some really negative views on some of the legions from my 40k taint, I doubt she'll have those if you don't taint her knowledge beforehand. Olis
The best thing for her, imo, is to start with the HH and if any questions are needed to be asked, you're there to fill in the gaps. Really, she's starting in a pretty good place. Balthamal
I'm quite envious of that actually. I think it would have been awesome to go into the series with a complete blank slate. But then again if that were the case I wouldn't have enjoyed the delicious irony of the opening pages of Horus Rising. One thing I would double check though is if she plans to get into the audios/novellas/shorts as well because some of them almost mess up the order the books need to be read in Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/309071-friend-to-start-reading-te-hh-books/#findComment-4080649 Share on other sites
sponsra
Thanks for the input, obviously not knowing means less degree of spoilers. But as a long time 40k fanboy, my excitement when starting reading these books dealing with a legendary part of the lore, amplified my reading experince alot. Then again, I probably cant transfers the skweee of 20+ years of nerdom no matter how much background I give on the epicness of the scoop... Realise now that this should´ve gone in the BL part of the forum, sorry about that :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/309071-friend-to-start-reading-te-hh-books/#findComment-4080690 Share on other sites
Jareddm
I've been doing this with my girlfriend. It started off really well, though after the first five we skipped around and did all the traditionally top rated ones, making a few side stops for things like novellas and the garro series. The key for me is to be very open minded regarding questions and always discuss things in the same way I would discuss any long running series. Jareddm
Just remember; there is no book by the name Battle cor the Abyss. :p The Word Bearers had a big ship called the Furious Abyss. Now it's a floating wreck over Macragge. That is all.
