First game of 30k... tips to make it a great game?

Recommended Posts

Hi folks!

This coming Monday, myself and a long term gaming buddy are going to dive into our first ever 30k game to see what all the fuss is about. That said, its a massive proxy game - we've both purchased some 30k goodies, but none of it even remotely tableworthy yet! We are both 40k veterans, so we have an excellent grasp of the core rule set, just not Heresy specific stuff.

I've read that 30k really starts to show its flavour above 2k, so we went big and decided a 3000 point proxy game would work best, with lots of boots on the ground, and a Primarch each!

What I'm wondering now is, does anyone have any tips that might make it a more enjoyable experience? Is there a certain mission you'd recommend? Anything at all, would be hugely beneficial at this point - if we both enjoy the battle, we will no doubt wax lyrical to our gaming group about it... could be the start of something big, so any pointers greatly appreciated :)

Many thanks!

What forces will you be both playing?

My advice. Go to around about 1850 to 2000 points. Dont shove in a primarch unless you really feel the need. And above all bring all the new 30k goodies you can. Volkites, attached apothecaries, rapier batteries, daredo dreadnoughts, sicarans, fire raptors/storm eagles, laser vindicators ect.

Bring something new to the table. Play in a fluffy style but try to remember the following.

We know fear

We can be swept

St6,7,8 are very common in the heresy

Tanks are cheap and plentiful

Always wipe front to back

Bring drinks :P

I recommend playing with at least 6 objectives and the random cards. It helps balance the game out so it's not just alpha strikefest.

I'd recommend staying away from super heavies or Primarchs for the first game. See how it is before playing with all the big toys lol

I'm playing Iron Hands, he's playing Sons of Horus :)

Tried to squeeze stuff into my list that I don't usual run, 20 man tac blob, apothecary, 10 man heavy weapons, 3x predators in a squadron, Spartan assault tank, gorgon termies Blah blah!

Should be a blast, one of the reasons we aimed so high point wise was because for both of us the primarchs on the table are a really big draw :) could even be the main reason for trying 30k!

With all that and ferrus you will be bloody hard to take down. Good choices.

Enjoy

And welcome to the age of darkness. You will be hooked now and never return to the bleak 41st millenium.

Imo pure objectives is the best, it really forces you to play tactically beyond rampaging up the board and lucking out on the maelstrom cards. On top of this, I'd recommend playing it 30k style as its inevitably closer at the end.

If you have the chance, they did just release new missions in tempest that are pretty interesting. They change things up nicely

Cheers for the input guys! Ive never been a huge fan of the maelstrom cards, unless of course you really are just playing an all out friendly.

We will probably stick to one of the mutli objective missions from the main rulebook.

In specific, what do you mean when you say play it 30k style? Sadly I dont have access to the Tempest book right now, but maybe one day!

Tempest has the updated age of darkness rules and generic heresy era scenario generator. It's a must have for clarifying how aod games work in the current edition of 40k. For instance maelstrom is not recommended, but stronghold assault is! and the scoring system is confirmed as different to 40k.

Yeah this. I just had to have this convo with my group, HH is not 7th edition its far closer to 6th.

Some people choose to play objectives 7th ed; everything scores with troops and Implacable Advance giving objective secure (troops giving it to their transports too).

Conquest (i didn't check out tempest too closely to see if they changed it) clarifies that they only want Troops and Implacable advance to be able to score at all; everything else denies. Its pretty important to know which people play with as it drastically changes what units are useful in terms of list building as well as target priority in game
