Daemon2027
In Fire and Darkness Tested I recentky asked in the Which Legion thread asking for ideas on the Pre Primarch Legions, and thanks to BCK I have been put onto the XVIII Legion. I particularly liked his idea for a cold combat force, fighting up close. Reading the background on the Salamanders this particularly fits their style, with the XVIII Legion being known for fighting up close to the last. They became known for fighting through impossible odds, barley surviving, never retreating, no matter the situation or for tactical consideration. They tended to employ short range weapons such as flame, volkite, and melta, and even before being reunited with Vulkan, they were known for their technical aptitude, able to repair and maintain, and even field manufacture weapons. So, basically, I am sold!I like a strong narrative to go behind my projects, so here I want to try and develop my idea, and would love the input of this forum. I initially thought about representing the Manticore Incident, but there is little detail, and not much clue what the Manticore could have been. I was thinking about a detachment of XVIII legion sent to investigate a Space Hulk that had been connected to the loss of contact of several compliment worlds. The Hulk was moving towards an important Forge World. So the XVIII had to board, find the danger, and neutralise it as quickly as possible, with no time to recon. While I would keep the models plain, the XVIII were not known to record individual deeds, I would like to include honours like the thunderbolts and the raptor's head, as well as the Saturnyne Ram. One thought I did have was setting the force just after the Legion being reunited with Vulkan. Having spent a few years with the Emperor, Vulkan met the bulk of the XVIII on Antaem, and then tried to reforge the Legion, band bring in the separate parts of the Legion together. My idea would be that the detachment could have a Nocturne Officer and a small bodyguard of Salamanders, who had joined to see the detachments integration with the new legion. I thought this may be a good way to inject something different into the detachment, a handful of Legionnaires with scales, and the new legion symbol. In a sense this is the last outing for this detachment of The Fearless, even if they survive they will become Salamanders. So, ideas, input, alternate thoughts? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/309163-the-fearless-the-genisis-of-a-pre-heresy-army/ Share on other sites
Balthamal
You could build it around a Delegatus (Promethean representative of Vulkan, possibly even one of the future Pyre Guard) and build around it a Pride of the Legion force given that any Terran elements of the Legion at this point would be veterans and would also still be tied into the close assault as their preferred method of war Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/309163-the-fearless-the-genisis-of-a-pre-heresy-army/#findComment-4082952 Share on other sites
Daemon2027
That's not a bad idea. I did consider the Pyre Guard, they were the last few Terrans were they not? A Terran officer who had met Vulkan and spent time on Nocturne with a small bodyguard of Nocturne born marines would probally be a decent diplomatic group to bring in the Vets.
