Fairstrife1138
hi, So when you make a normal list in 40k or fantasy, it's usually pretty obvious what you want to be taking to play. And I think that's because inherently I play quite defensive, and with very little regard to what my opponent is playing. I just play what I like. But in 30k, because we all have the same pool to play from, it's tricky. So what are the boxes that need to be ticked, what are the essentials and the no no's Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/309188-how-to-go-about-making-a-list/ Share on other sites
Slips
Anti-armor, potential anti-flyer unless your meta doesnt have any, ability to deal with 2+ beatstick characters (usually with your own), anti 3+ blob options as well as anti masses 2+ and mobility for objective capping. These are, off the top of my head, the things that come up the most when one is trying to build a 30k list. Fairstrife1138
So if you have in, say a 3k list A vindicator, a Sicaran Venator, a beat stick character with AP2 (typical Salamander Praetor), lots of flamer on the infantry and some decent armour? Slips
For 3k? Thudd Gun Batteries: At least 2 3x Squads. Each can drop 12 S8 Sunder shot or 12 S5 3" Blasts with -1LD to pinning. Spartan with Armored Ceramite and Flareshield for (if salamanders) Preator + Firedrakes (or Vulkan + Firedrakes) With attached Primus Medicae in Cataphractii + Stormshield for FNP on a just-as-durable platform. 20 Man Tac Blobs (unless taking another specific RoW) with attached Apothecaries At least 1 Deredeo in HS for anti-air but is great all around If you want to run Pyroclasts, give them a Land Raider Proteus with Exploratory Augury Web for Scout. 8 Man unit, 7 if you want to attach a Primus for FNP (unless they can also take an apothecary - free up that HQ slot) If you wanted to make the Firedrake Hammer even more Painful, add on a Forgelord in Termy Armor with a Stormshield too for Rad Grenades. -1T for the poor squad getting Charged by the Pain Train? Sure, why not. Also give you another character to take a Challenge from Vulkan if you're running him Graviton Equipped units (dreads, Contemptors, Rapiers) to be able to Haywire very tough (Flare Shielded Spartan) Av14 5Hp+ Tanks/Superheavies. At 3k a Vindicator is pretty much dead before it gets to shoot. Unless your bringing 2+, dont bother there are better options, like the Typhon which is a Vindicator on Steroids. Venator is decent for stun-locking a Template Spewing LoW but is still a Sicaran Chassis. If you want true anti-Horde, you take Heavy Support Squad with Volkite Culverins. Not only will they get to shoot more than Flamer-Equipped Squads, a Squad of 10 pumps out 40 shots of Deflagrate goodness at 45". Fairstrife1138
See I do LOVE Volkite and Grav weaponry. Especially 30k stuff while it's still mostly exclusive. I just feel like I'm not getting the best out of the RoW for Sallies. But maybe a different RoW is in order then. Those are some sick choices you have there. I think j will keep it to just Praetor/ Vulkan in Spartan with Drakes otherwise if I start adding new characters I'll never have points left. Haha. At the Very least, give the Vulkan Pain Train a Primus Medicae. Nothing says "Come at me bro!" like 2+/3++ with FNP. While most of these choices are the Standouts in term of cost/efficiency/WhatTheyDo, it doesnt mean that there aren't other just-as-effective options. For example: If your Meta is very Av14 Wall heavy with nearly every list having a Spartan "Pain Train", consider getting a Primaris-Lightning loaded up with Kraken Penetrator Missiles. They're S8 Ap1 Armorbane Missiles that will deliver the pain. Just make sure their Anti-Air is taken care of first. Since your Salamanders, you could take Jetbike Squadrons and swap the Heavy Bolters for Heavy Flamers for Free. You now have a very fast and decently resilient anti-horde unit. Just make sure to give them Melta Bombs. Whirlwind Scorpius. If it doesnt move you get D3+1 S8 Ap3 3" Blast missiles a turn. Deny that FNP save on Tac Blobs. Make sure you have Nuncio-Voxes so you can perform indirect fire without full scatter due to Barrage. Legion Tac Vets Fire Raptors bring prodigious amounts of Dakka and can deal with flyers. Contemptor Dreads. Whats not to love? They look better than the Stumpy Boxes and have a wide array of Gear. Tool them up for the job you want. Generic Legion Terminators Y'know. Just find a theme and build around it. Sure we might say that there are more effective/efficient choices but whats all that advice worth in the face of "The Rule of Cool" and "Its my Hobby, I do what I want"? Fairstrife1138
Thats very helpful mate thank you. Finding a theme is very important, not just finding a Unit you want to use, but a theme to it. I want to use Vulkan, so Istvaan 5 is a pretty awesome theme i can stick to. The problem is when i think of themes i usually get ahead of myself and end up thinking of a theme for every Legion and going crazy. You've no idea how lucky you are to have chosen Imperial Fists and stuck to them haha. depthcharge12
Start at a 2000 point list and work your way up. You should have all the tools you need at that point and everything after is just gravy or redundancy. Find a few units that you'll want to take regardless of their rules/fluff/etc., and then add all your necessaries. I highly recommend taking a grav or rapier platform of any kind for AT duty, and either a Sicaran or Kheresnaught for high volume, deadly shooting. I'd also advocate some form of cataphractii armored unit, with larger numbers being better unless they're expensive (like Firedrakes). They do quite well against all the marines and are quite survivable in cc with the extra 4++ save.
