Subjugator Development?

Agreed.

On the face of them I think they could be, and probably are, perceived as fence-sitters... "half IF half BT", with not much to offer anyone in terms of room for individuality. But I think a few of the more minor and seemingly dismissable characteristics we know about them might work together to create potential for something quite unique.

They've really captured my imagination lately, working on some concepts as we speak...

We have quite a bit of info on them from the master list, it would be a good base to start with:

  • 1 Company remains on Armageddon, 3rd War, after the Season of Fire: EPIC Armageddon V5 rules   page 70.
  • Captain Rakman, commenting on the Sons of Anteaus. Founding 21: The Cursed Founding Chapters - http://uk.games-workshop.com/spacemarines/cursed/3/ , Chapter Approved 2004 pg. 8
  • Entire compliment of Predators are Annihilator Pattern. C:SMv5 pg. 78
  • Chapter Planet: Xenax. C:SMv5 galactic map
  • Part of Fleet Sanctus, Eye of Terror Containment Group alongside White Templars and Relictors. C:SMv5 galactic map
  • Battle Group Purgator, Therrix Suppression, 085M41. 1 under strength company and 2 Thunderhawks. Apocalypse rulebook pg. 123
  • Active around the Cadian Gate during the 13th Black Crusade. 3 Companies. C:EoT pg. 16
  • Astartes Praeses. C:EoT pg 16
  • How to Paint Space Marines pg. 77
  • Codex Chapter. How to Paint Space Marines pg. 88
  • Ships of the Space Wolves, Howling Griffons, Iron Knights and Subjugators form part of Strike Force Herald, charged with the destruction of St. Josmane’s Hope during the 13th Black Crusade. The 13th Black Crusade pg. 36
  • Loses during the 13th Black Crusade threaten the Chapters continued existence. The 13th Black Crusade pg. 88
  • Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes poster (out of print). Art of Warhammer 40k pg. 70-71
  • Only use the Destructor variant of the Predator. WD270 pg. 82
  • 3 Companies committed during the Eye of Terror Campaign. Chapter is newly formed so any loses could be devestating to the Chapters future. Astartes Praeses Chapter. WD281 pg. 74
  • 3rd Company destroys a Ramilies star fort over Cadia after it was taken over by Chaos. Few members of the 3rd Company survived. 13th Black Crusade. WD283 pg. 68
  • 1st and 5th Company severly mauled during the fighting as Kasr Gallan. The Chapter has lost 168 battle brothers during the 13th Black Crusade. Chapter now forced to decide if they retire from the fighting to rebuild or continue fighting and risk the death of their Chapter. WD286 (UK edition) pg. 70
  • 20 Battle Brothers infected by the Xenos race known as cell-kin. The 20 fled the Chapter and are believed at large in the galaxy to this day. WD302 pg. 75
  • Tranquility Campaign. WD311 pg. 87
  • Marines of the Death Spectres, Disciples of Caliban, Iron Snakes and Subjugators serving in a sanctioned Crusade Company as guardians of the Crusade banner in 777M41, during the Achilus Crusade into the Jericho Reach. Deathwatch RPG pg. 339

  • Believed to be of the 23rd or 24th Founding. Rites of Battle FFG pg. 68
  • Unrelenting in their prosecution of the enemies of Mankind, always attacking in overwhelming force and eschewing many of the more subtle arts of war. Rites of Battle FFG pg. 68
  • Reputation for the total devestation of all resources and assets on a world in order to ensure enemies of the Imperium never return. Even going so far as purging oppressed populations. This has led to some Imperial Commanders being hesitant to request aid from the Chapter. Rites of Battle FFG pg. 68
  • Contributed a single squad and several armoured vehicles to the Damocles Crusade. Rites of Battle FFG pg. 68
  • Chapter elements deploy to the Jericho Reach after the victory against Hive Fleet Behemoth on Macgragge. Rites of Battle FFG pg. 68

  • Contribute 1 Tactical squad to the Damocles Gulf Crusade. Savage Scars pg. 271
  • Attack enemy’s strongest point both to humiliate enemy leaders and to crush their best troops. C:SM Digital Edition pg. 95
  • Brother Ultheris, 7th Co. Deathwatch: The Achilus Assault pg. 37

So my thoughts on theme/direction/character for the Subjugators so far. Apologies for (lack of) formatting and flow, this is a brain dump:

- lost some of the 'honour' of the IF and a bit more rugged. I see a touch of the pragmatism and grit of the Marines Malevolent in them

- fought at the Eye since their inception, become hardened and cynical as they've seen too many men turn to Chaos. Though they continue to serve them, they see mortals as ultimately weak and incompetent, need to be watched and controlled as much as possible, lives forfeit and expendable if necessary to keep their souls pure and the Imperium safe. Literally better off dead than corrupted

- lot of hate speech centred around Chaos specifically, less worried about Xenos as overall threat to humanity. Most hated and also favoured enemy would be Chaos Marines even more than demons and human traitor forces, sometimes get reckless when fighting them, riskier and even more prone to all-in devastation plans despite being an otherwise sensible and sound tactical force. This is where we would see their "BT" side most

- not poorly equipped (important duty in Segmentum Solar, I imagine they'll be well supplied) but fairly war torn and weathered from moving between constant engagements, fending off forces from the Eye or moving in and taking it to them

- big on revenge and never leaving a score unsettled, strong need to finish victorious or finish on top and "subjugating" at any cost. Stubborn as all sons of Dorn. "Let not the Traitor act unanswered - if he takes an eye, you take his head"

- chains feel like they would suit them, though not for the reasons BT use them. Maybe a simple chain is wrapped around a segment of armour when making an oath to avenge a brother, or settle the score against a certain enemy force - not taken up lightly as he is then bound to honour the oath before he dies or forever disgrace his name. Chain tabards. Brutal (but not savage) appearance - 'warrior stripe' hairstyles and the like, stubble, some tattooing, use a lot of maces/mauls

- pious/zealous but not long-winded about it, prefer to fight than preach

Any thoughts/additions anyone can come up with?
