Rebasing to 32mm

Recommended Posts

I have a bunch of unbuilt marines, however this is the first I am hearing of people basing marines (especially bare tacticals) on the 32mm. Why exactly would anyone do it? Are the new marine models being based on these slightly bigger bases? Is it just to look cool? Does it really interfere with gameplay as well?

Since last year, all newly released power armoured Space Marines are shipping with 32mm bases. If you buy a Tactical, Assault or Devastator Squad today, you'll get 32mm bases.

It does look a lot better - the 32mm is ~1mm taller as well as wider, and it gives Marines much more presence next to 25mm infantry such as Guardsmen and the like. They're a much better fit for the bulk of the miniatures - Marines don't hang over the edge of their bases any more, and you have room for more scenic modelling.

The effects on gameplay of occupying more space should be obvious. It's harder to hide, deep striking is slightly riskier, fewer models will be hit by templates, etc.

Thanks, I definitely do think it looks a bit better so I might have to score some off ebay. I'd image they don't fall over as easily as well.

At first, I was apprehensive about doing this.  Then I got some 32mm bases and tried it.  I have to say, powered armor looks so much more impressive on a larger base!  It's kind of an illusion but it seems to more accurately convey the size.

So all of my powered armor will go onto 32s - either during assembly, or eventually I may get around to rebasing my old Space Wolves.  I don't put everything on 32s - just powered armor.  Scouts stay on 25s and I think that helps to differentiate between carapace-armored troops that are not yet fully developed Marines.

Im about to take the plunge myself, its whats been keeping me from getting on with my Marines Errant.

For anyone interested, DarkSphere have recently added Citadel 32mm to their online store. I've just ordered 50 and the new codex, saved myself a tenner even with postage. smile.png

Thanks for that, was going to order from GW as I had been looking at Dark Sphere for some time but was never able to see any 32mm bases. Saved me some money, I promis to make a Marines Errant corpse as an objective marker in your honour for the Badab thread.

Hah same! Was at the point of emailing them about it, when I noticed they'd added them to the store.

And thanks brother. msn-wink.gif

Edit: Ooooh and for any Greenskin players, Nobz look 100% better on the 32mm as well. Give it a try. :)

I'm probably one of the small minority that prefers 25mm. Mostly because almost all my marines have walking or running legs. Putting these kinds of marines on a 32mm leaves a lot of empty space that I can't be bothered to fill up with doodads and basing, although the 32mm will help jump pack stability.

I'm getting a box of the new Assault Marines and may be forced to re-base, since they only come with 32mm and I feel like it would be massively cheesy to put the new models on old 25mm bases when they weren't provided with any. I wouldn't want 5 guys to be on 32mm and then like 30+ others to be on 25mm.

I also feel like 40mm bases are too big for Terminators unless you put some junk for them to prop one foot up on, or a cliff to stand on.
