Conversions...

Hey guys,

I have some questions I need answered. I have laid out my infantry and I have some choices to make. But before we talk choices, here's what I have. I have two full strength platoons (110) of steel legion infantry, and four veteran squads (40). I also have ten heavy weapons squads (60). All of which are steel legion models. I have several completed conversion within my force. I have been thinking with the leftover sergeants and troopers I could do some more conversions. I have some things in mind. I need opinions before I start cutting up out of production models.

I like the idea of rough riders and I have found some nice pictures of steel legion models turned into rough riders on bikes. I would use space marine scout bikes as a base and build up using the marine legs and steel legion torsos with green stuff coat tails. I like this idea. I have six sergeants and a few grunts to pull this off with.

I have also thought of using some of the models to make unique poses for my weapons teams and my squads. I have some ideas for making unique missile launcher teams and auto cannon teams. And one I have always wanted to build which is a steel legion sergeant harker. This would make my cookie cutter army even more unique. I am trying to be a purest here and only have steel legion models in this army.

In either choice I have to plan out my conversions its either rough riders or more conversions for my infantry. I need some help with this. My local game stores all enjoy seeing unique armies and love my steel legion in the works, the question is which has more appeal in the eyes of other guardsmen.

I want all thoughts my army is not yet painted I use traditional steel legion colors with a twist I only have a few completed models sorry I don't have pictures yet. I will work on that just need some opinions. Thanks guys.

How about tank and sentinel crews?for such conversations i would try to make a cast of the sgt body without arms as that should be possible to make a decent cast of,and resin schould be easier to chop up in comparison to the metal ones, plus you get to save those models for what they are actually meant. I recently saw some dkok rough riders converted in steel legion rough riders. That looked ace! Otherwise i would go with the empire outrider kit,as the kneeboots should be relatively easy to sculpt over the armoured legs

I know some steel legion models are no longer available, but just as an FYI if you didn't know, you can still get some stuff from gw if you feel the need to bulk up even more on those numbers (which are impressive!).

Pics of the army btw?

I would say tank/sentinel crews would look good as a nice touch to tie the army together (and I imagine you have a fair few chrimeras that would love drivers/commanders poking their heads out). Also rough riders could look very cool too

I will get pictures as soon as I can. I also have about fifty vehicles. I never thought about crew. I have the old crew from second edition that are on my tanks.

About casting. I have never done it and don't know much. So any advice atall would be useful. Is there a company that does casts and makes resin copies or do I do it myself. Please help out if you can.

I saw that rough rider before its part of my inspiration. I want to use a scout bike though it's a lot less bulky.

Thanks so far for help and comments. Keep them coming.

I don't believe the B&C allowed much discussion on casting, but it's something i would look into if it's only for your own personal use, and just a torso+head you want to cast to be used on vehicle commanders instead of actuall full blown miniatures.

i recommend looking up some youtube videos and doing some digging around on google. note that casting isn't super cheap, so you'll need to consider it's cost, in comparison to just getting some more miniatures and converting those... if it's only 4-5 tank commanders you want to change i would not bother and just use original steel legion models. if it's 10+ maybe than you should consider it. offcourse you could also use the experience to cast up more generic pieces such as track that you want to use for extra armour, backpacks etc.
i've done some casting (my self made earthshaker platforms, and some smaller bits) and the only mold that is actually worth it's money to me are the molds i made of the various barrels and crates, as i used a crapload of those in my self made terrain, the actuall gun emplacement not so much.... if you've got more questions i guess it's better to send me a PM, although i'm far from a master when it comes to casting.

Thanks, Hendrik. I have to start looking now. I have to get this figured out. I also want to make some of my other models unique. I want to make the cookie cutter go away. I mean I love the steel legion sculpt but its has so little individuality.

in that case i highly recoomend you start to learn sculpting with green stuff and other materials, to allow more poses on your models. i good start is to make artillery crew (such as the ones for basilisks or wyverns), as on these the artillery shell can hide a lot of rough work!

Rather than completely new sculpts remove a bit of detail and then add different detail. And be as simple as removing webbing and replacing with gs strips with plastic bits (all those pouches and grenades the kits come with) glued on.

I've got a force which will mainly be made up of old Catachan. I've nabbed models from the necromunda range to add variation (Orlock, Goliath and Esher models).

Look for similar models to sprinkle into the squads and it breaks the up!
