Ideas for an imperial knight.

Recommended Posts

I'm having some trouble picturing how I want my knight to look. I know I want to put my chapter symbol on it, and somewhere I want to have its name. (Probably bigger than the space provided on the chest). Aside from details like that, I'm also not sure how I want to paint it.

Is there anyone that might be able to help me with this?

Man, take a look into the Dex. biggrin.png There are literally dozens of paint schemes....

Do you have the codex? Also, how much do you know about Knights? These two factors will determine where we're going on this one.

You'll have to consider a few things:

First, will your Knight be from a Household or is he a Freeblade?

Which Faction will your Knight fall under if you choose the Household option: Mechanicus or Imperial?

Is he good at killing a certain foe?

What's your favourite colour?

Do you want to paint something challenging or relaxing and easy?

Who are his, or his Household's, allies?

Also, "Galavant" sounds awesome happy.png.

I have the old codex, I don't know whats changed in the new one.

I guess freeblade. I chose a little more unorthodox of a background so that I could slap my EGA's on it.

I don't know how factions would work for a freeblade, but I would go with imperial if that's an option.

By certain foe do you mean chaos eldar orks, or do you mean wraith knight, riptides, other knights? If it's factions, chaos.

I want it to look good. I plan to greenstuff a bunch to make some of the painting easier. Also I'm going to put a pin up on it.

His allies are the Eagles Eternal.

I kinda want to paint it in my chapters colors, but then there's the things That most knights have where certain parts of amor are split colors and half logos. Thanks for the help

If you're going Freeblade, you're essentially running solo - not allied with any Imperial or Mechanicus House. Mind, you may be allied with a no longer existent House - maybe the last member of a Household that was destroyed.

A Freeblade might ally themself with a Space Marine Chapter - you give me X and I'll give you Y - and bear some, if not all, the Chapter's markings.

Then there are the twelve 'big name' Freeblades from the new codex - check the downloads to see a sheet with all but one of them (decals for the one not on the sheet comes with the Knight model). That sheet will at least give you a name to research should you want to go that route.

Freeblade imagery is free form (based on the whims of the pilot), while Household imagery tends to limit personal variations (it's still there, but the household iconography tends to occupy most areas on the Knight armour).

With regards to arms and armour, Knight suits come in one of ten forms, regardless of whether worn by a Freeblade or a member of a Household - a Freeblade Paladin, with but a few options, is the same as a Mechanicus Paladin.

I'm going to assume you've seen the pinup I did for Queen Bee, right? I posted it all here on B&C but I summed it up in a blog post a while back. Have a look if you haven't already seen it. I had a really hard time finding a good spot for it that wasn't already somewhere else. I ended up wanting to feature it pretty strongly, but besides that you might want to have a good look around the kit before you brainstorm the art too much. It might end up so small that it's hardly worth it. Most of the best spots are already taken.

I don't know how I managed to miss that, I've long browsed at your queen new thread.

Let me ask you, do you feel it was too small to be worth it? I might go ahead and use the shield due to its forward direction. Yours is done to a very high quality; I doubt I can match that.

I decided to go ahead and start applying some green stuff for my chapter symbol. As I worked I realized that the sizing wouldn't match up, so I'm going to have the image be partially cut off. I'm going to post it bellow so I can get feedback as to weather or not you guys think it will turn out alright in this fashion. The pen markings are where the globe will be.

Alright, you're off to a good start. The only reason I ask about if you wanted a Freeblade is because you can do a one-off paint scheme and not have to worry about group continuity. Your Green Stuff looks excellent, by the way.

If you like the quartered panel style of painting, you could easily work your DIY's colours in there. I personally would pick a different main colour that would be a good contrast to the red, white, and blue and paint that on the panels you choose not to have your custom colours on.

Looking forward to a great job thumbsup.gif!

Really, I'd pick an earth tone. Maybe something that matches your gaming board or boards you normally play. Or, mottle a colour you like. I did a green mottle effect starting with Castellan Green, then Death World Forest, and finally finishing it with Elysium Green. You could even put on a gloss finish after to make it look like marble if you wanted. The Knight I'm doing for the ETL has a sand colour (Steel Legion Drab base, Zandri Dust layer, Seraphim Sepia wash over the entire panel, and then an Ushabti Bone drybrush).

Have fun and do something you normally wouldn't do. To me, Knights are a reward for painting my other armies so the method you choose may differ based on how you view them.

I'd say a drab green like Castellan Green, a sand colour, brown, or grey would all look great beside red, white, and blue.

I thought I said this somewhere, I wanted to challenge myself a little with some sort of digital patern. Either woodlands, desert or a grayscale.

The basing I use on my models (and the terrain/realm of battle board I want I get) is a gray/stone urban setting.

Wow, that green stuff is crisp!

As for the pinup, that's a tough question. In my opinion, if I couldn't have done it on the shield I was ready to scrap it because, yeah, it was looking like it was going to be too small. That said, you're obviously willing to make some modifications, so I think you might be able to MAKE room for it. Maybe on the top carapace, in place of some of the hatches or handrails? If you're willing to make a flatter surface, you can put it all over the place. The shield might work for you as well, but it's sort of up to you to decide if that's the most important iconography or if you'd rather put something else there. That's the beauty of freeblade knights.

EDIT: I also think the way you're doing the shoulder is right on. For the pilot, it's less about reproducing the chapter symbol and more about declaring his allegiance to them or a certain ideal. I love the idea he might mess with their logo a little bit.

I think my background for my pilot falls into a taboo catagory.... Come to think of it, it has a similarly feel to the story "a knights tale".

Thanks for the support, I'm going to keep looking at this from different angles to see what else comes to mind. Any advice on construction?

I'm sure everyone will tell you to assemble in groupings to make life easier for you. Honestly, it's a very simple model to assemble for the most part. I got messed up on the chest piece (not the armor, the one with the cables) because it ALMOST fits fine if you put it on upside down, but other than that everything was super simple. You can use magnets and whatnot if you want to maintain a lot moving parts, but you'll lose a bit of stability in trade.

How much moving parts did you go for?

Well, I'm a bit over-zealous and I converted quite a bit of stuff, but it's not all poseable because I was going for a specific pose. I have the legs glued in place for stability, the waist is connected by magnets so it stays in the right position but can be separated for travel. The head and heavy stubber are glued in place, the elbows are glued but the arms can be removed (you don't even need to magnetize them). The carapace isn't glued down because I might get to the interior some day. The shoulder plates are also not glued down. I do have a bunch of magnets in the gun arm so I can swap them around and they'll still look accurate. On the reaper arm, I thought at first I'd want to pose it so I replaced the piston with plastic rod and made it actually poseable, but I ended up gluing it in place because I really just wanted to set it in place.
