I've been wanting to start guard for a while now and take a break from marines. Originally I planned to use the old 3rd edition cadians but sadly didn't have enough for a decent list. Luckily I've come across a good deal on the more modern models and have begun down what is probably a long road ahead.

This first of many will be part of my CCS. Have to say, for just a base coat and wash, I'm pretty stoked with it.

Looks really good!  A piece of advice. Don't go too crazy on the details, because on a "horde" army (horde meaning LOTS of troops) you'll go mad painting. Base, wash and a quick dry-brush and you're golden.  Just a friendly  heads up before you're in too deep!

:)

Show us more!

I'll second that, My guard army is really infantry heavy, and the infantry alone put a hefty dent in my paint supply. If you want to stop painting because all you're doing is infantry, do a vehicle or two.

Take it from a guy who did 2500 points in a week (somewhere near a 1000 of it for ETL). Personally I'm a matching fatigues kind of guy, I find it makes the process easier, when you don't have to switch colors as often. It's not as visually interesting, but I assembly line paint, since I build big armies.

You're off to a great start with this model!  I'd echo that you'll probably want to streamline your painting process when you get started on your line infantry, because it's easy to burn out on Guard if you try to be too shiny.  That said, for a Command Squad I can understand being a bit more picky (I was with mine, too).

Overall, I like the scheme you've picked, though I'm a bit iffy with the green for the pants.  It seems to contrast a bit with the "earthy" tones on the armor; maybe tone it down to a less vibrant shade?

Great work Buster, as you said he looks excellent for just a wash - maybe the road ahead won't be that long after all? ;) I agree that the colours picked are good but the darker leggings might need changing to the tan, or a lighter colour.

Just kidding. Nobody ever stops collecting a Guard army so the road never ends

Thanks guys! Hopefully I won't burn out on the infantry since I'm planning to run a mechanized vets list. I'm not to sure on the pants myself, I was trying to go for a WW2 scheme and it looked like the helmets and pants were different shades of green there. Might go back and try something else.

A new recruit? Thank the Emperor! Welcome to the Imperial Guard. I thought that last group we got in was rubbish so maybe you'll do better. Remember: if you hear screaming, run towards that sound, not away from it. I don't know who put up those blasted posters stating the opposite...

Anywho, I'll second Hendrik. The trousers look nice but the "ankle-biters" would look better painted like the rest of the armour, in my opinion. The beret is nice, too.

As one of those previous 'new recruits', I resent that remark! I only fall back to a better position while our tanks roll up.

Anyways, back on topic, I think the miniature looks pretty good, though I agree the trousers might need to be a tad lighter. I find that the trousers as they are draw the eye a bit too much and you lose out on the rest of the miniature. That said, it is just my take :)

Also, welcome the barracks. Remember, pay day is Friday and lights out at 22:00.

Um... Say again? I too, am pretty sure I was in that last group, and who was it that completed five vows for ETL, and the lasting glory of the Guard?

Buster, I like the WW2 US infantryman inspired color palette, Very cool, and not widely done. I'm keen to see what you do with it.

Just do a squad at a time. Then add a vehicle. Then swap back and forth. You can get burned out painting squads upon squads upon squads....

Paint job looks good though. Keeping it simple is the way to go. The rank and file die too quick to warrant a high level of effort, for many armies.

Got the company commander finished up last night. I have a bad habit of painting one figure at a time but figure this won't be to bad for the command squad since the members have more detail than a regular grunt. When the squads arrive in the mail I'll move on to assembly line painting.

I'm going to have to borrow this paint scheme. It's intriguing, and fits with the original concept I had for my unit's aesthetic. They were inspired by the Devil's Brigade/Ranger Battalions, but kinda evolved into the modern 101st Airborne/10th Mountain/75th Rangers.

What colors are you using?

Ulrik, those units are my inspiration too. For the colors I used P3 thornwood green for the armour and weapons, karak stone for the jacket and gaiters, Caliban green for the trousers, P3 bootstrap brown (I think) for the boots and pouches, and wazzdakka red (pretty sure that was it) for the beret. After the base coat I just covered the whole model in agrax earthshade.

My berets were done in a highlighted layer, as I was going for the deep maroon of the Modern Airborne berets. I based in Screamer pink, did a thin layer of knorne red, over the edges and high spots, and then did a mephiston red highlight.

I'm going to use this as inspiration for my platoon units, as I did multicam style camo on the fatigues of most of my guys, with grey armor (because I needed a bit of color).

Gotta second SW1, Agrax Earthshade (and to a lesser extent, Nuln Oil) are the saving grace of IG assembly lines!  I honestly couldn't imagine painting the ranks of infantry without them.

Seeing the Company Commander, I think I like the green a bit more here.  It may be that his overcoat is shading it a bit better, or perhaps you darkened it a bit more.  That's a thought: maybe go for a darker wash for the pants?  (previously mentioned Nuln Oil might work, here)
