Primer problems

Recommended Posts

Hey guys

Just after some help on primers. I use vallejio out of an airbrush and have done for all my space wolves on plastic and resin. Recently though I painted up some fw marines only to have the paint completely peel off. They had been washed thoroughly and primed a week previous.

So I have scrubbed all again, including bits for a spartan and I have a plastic land raider I have primed as well about an hour ago.nnow I know stuff should be left to cure overnight, but should you still be able to scratch it off with your nail an hour after it's been sprayed? And I don't mean heavey scrubbing I mean literally by dragging your finger nail across it? On plastic and on resin....

Cheers

it sounds like the primer isn't getting any bite, on the larger pieces maybe try scuffing it up a bit with some very fine grain sand paper.

Another option is to try a different batch of paint, which if that doesn't work (though no reason why it shouldn't if you've used it successfully before) then maybe give an automotive primer a shot. I usually recommend Duplicolor sandable primer, but that's just my preference.

Possibly, are you also seeing graining on the model? If so then yeah the paint may be drying in the air before it hits the idea so getting a little closer may help.

A second question, when you washed the models did you also use dish soap or something to degrease them? I know the FW resins sometimes take an extended period of time to "sweat out" the mold release.

Had some issues with that as well and I've recently started experimenting with brush-on priming followed by airbrushed base coloring.

I must say I'm happy with the result; Vallejo primer or GW's Imperial Primer go on very liquid and are 'self levelling' so leave a perfectly even light layer. Then I use my airbrush for the following base colors.

Glad it seems to have sorted itself out. I did have some issues a while ago with Vallejo white primer scratching off easily. It turned out I hadn't shook the bottle properly and there was quite a lot of pigment still stuck at the bottom. Seemed to clear up after shaking thoroughly for about 2-3 minutes and I got much better results. I'm sure you are shaking it properly, but thought it was worth mentioning just in case!
