Building Cato

Recommended Posts

Hello, Ultra Bros!

So, now that Cato Sicarius got a bit of a reduction in cost and the Gladius formation rewards a more traditional company-style deployment (especially with auxiliaries that utilize reserves [i'm looking at you, Storm Wing]), I find myself wanting to experiment with the Spear of MacCragge.

But, alas, my Sicarius model is no more.  Lost, sold, who knows?  But now the survivors of my ragged 2nd Company lack their captain.  So, I have a problem since I don't really like the official model for Captain Sicarius and I don't want to buy it again.  So I'm thinking of just kitbashing a new model.  The new upgrade sprue has the officer's transverse crest and some Ultra bling, but I'm not sure how else to fit out this model.

How would you guys go about capturing his essence?  Specific bits are no problem, I either have them laying about or can get them online.  Thoughts?

Honestly I'm using the captain fig who happens to look a lot like Sicarius and when he's in a list that needs reserve rolls, I just 'counts as' him as Sicarius. The model is very, very close to Sicarius but is holding a Combi Grav (which I use on the Capt).

I still don't like Sicarius, unless I have reserves. I prefer my Captain, Burning Blade, and Combi Grav. But I have used Sicarius in my Gladius and he was okay.... not great. Gave tank hunters to a Tactical Drop Pod Melta/combi melta squad.

Sicarius definitely has a place in a Demi Company or Gladius as he can function as the mandatory hq there - something a Libby can't do for example.

The new Ultramarines upgrade Sprue can turn any Marine into Sicarius - all you need is a plasma pistol addition. You could also pick up a caped back torso from ebay to really bling him out.

You're absolutely right... I don't know how I missed that, but I have a few of those Upgrade Packs for Ultra's and I was even comparing my Captain's headpiece to the Upgrade sprue, same for the Gladius blades, and the awesome chest piece. There's enough to start on your Sicarius.

I will say the Devastator kit legs are very cool too. You could easily just go vanilla on the legs, but there's a certain cool factor to those legs if you had spares (I find I probably won't use all of them for devs as I bought multi boxes just to flesh out the Grav Cannons).

But yea, that upgrade sprue is half of Cato in a box right there.

I'm also planning a Sicarius model! As stated above the clam pack captain bears a strong resemblance at table top distance. I plan to use the captain as a base, replace his head w the actual sicarius helmetless head, replace his combi-grav w a hand holding the crested helm on the upgrade sprue, and replace his sword w the power sword on the upgrade sprue. This should hopefully work and give off the same vibe as the official sicarius.

Edit: another thought that's more kitbashy- start w a pair of FW mk II legs, add the MPPK captain chest and cape, cut off the pteruges from the mk VIII torso on the upgrade sprue and add those, use crested helm and sword from upgrade sprue and viola. Kitbashier but you could have more freedom w a build like this.

I'm building a new Captain, that I may well use as Sicarius, I haven't decided yet, with the clampack Captain body, but the torso and head from the upg sprue, I'll probably use the sword too.

From my dry fittings, it will work quite well, only slight modification needed, but I'll probably cut off the attached shoulder to use one of the new ones, and green stuff the cloak to go under his pauldron, rather than over.

Debated posting this as I realize you have to buy the model again. My Cato Sicarius WIP, currently pinned and held in place with blu-tac. Hopefully it can inspire you to build a model worth of the 2nd Company Captain.

Leigon Praetor

Sicarius

Random Tactical Squad arm.

Greenstuff.

Thank you all for the replies!

The Legion Praetor conversion looks great!  No doubt that is Cato.

After thinking about it all weekend, the original has a lot of bling that would be hard to reproduce.  I could buy a Captain's box, but then I might as well just get the original model.

I managed to get my hands on the 2nd web exclusive Space Marine Captain that GW did a while ago and decided to make my 3rd Company Captain (and count as Sicarius when I want) from it.  It still needs some greenstuff work and then moving to either a 32mm or 40mm base.

I've used:

The web exclusive Captain legs, torso and banner.

Ultramarines upgrade sprue for the head, left pouldron and power sword (which I've had to change the hand of as it was a lefty!)

The scabbard from the Sternguard set (again switched sides)

Sternguard right pouldron and arm.

Tactical squad plasma pistol and left arm.

Overall I like the effect - what do you guys think?  (Sorry for the large image)

Thanks - I've just started a WIP blog on the forum to show my Ultramarines progression, so we'll see how it goes.  I've already changed his shoulder pad to something different...
