Frater Cornelius
What would be a good place to start? I am less interested in the 30k stuff, but rather the secretive 40k affairs. I want to get some insight on how a secretive monastic order like the DA function and use it as inspiration for my Knight House. Any recommendation? Cheers ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/309870-dark-angel-literature/ Share on other sites

Space Truckin
Well for 40k I'm afraid you got two main flavours to choose from. G. Thorpe or CZ Dunn - I liked Purging of Kadillus - great story featuring Scout Sgt. Naaman and Int. Chaplain Boreas. It precedes the events on Piscina IV where the trilogy later kicks off. The novel is centered around the old Storm of Vengeance Campaign. Battle Brothers ( short story ) <- not sure where this fits in the timeline but I found it a good quick read. dalleron
if you're interested in the secret monastic stuff, then you should read Descent of Angels, even though its Horus Heresy era. They touch on the secretive nature of the Dark Angels in this book. But the books mentioned above are all we really have for literature that isn't primarch porn. Chaplain Lucifer
Unremembered Empire or anything by ADB if you want good literature. Codexes and Campaign books after that. Then Deathwing Anthology. After that if you didn't have enough go for HH books. Master Sindiferous
All listed above are great. I have went through most Black Library DA books. I too liked purging of Kadilus. Think that may verge on Heresy though.... Checkout my post for Sentient Angels Chapter on the forum under "Brotherhood of Angels 2015" may be page two of the DA forum. I tied my IK back to my new DA Chapter. There are a lot of other good write ups there that may help. Captain Semper
Angels of Darkness. Seriously... It's the book that redeems Thorpe in my eyes no matter what he wrote about DAs after that... Gillyfish
Personally I always liked the original Deathwing short story, although it seems a little incongruent with current background nowadays, sadly. I think some of the short stories are good - Black Pearl I think was a fairly good one. hopkins
I just ploughed through Gav Thorpe's 40k output, which he linked here http://gavthorpe.co.uk/a-readers-guide/ I would recommend reading the Horus Heresy stuff first though, for background and knowledge Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/309870-dark-angel-literature/#findComment-4099057 Share on other sites
Daevyll
Alas, the Dark Angels have suffered the misfortune of being assigned Gav Thorpe as an author our Magos Scribus. Clearly, the Inquisition suspects our secret shame and has punished us as cruelly as only they can. We shall have to intensify The Hunt to atone. That said, I agree with the posters above that the HH stuff is best. I liked the portayel of the Dark Angels in Unremembered Empire by Abnett, and there are some short stories by ADB on the Thramas Crusade which are worth reading. Sevatar calling the Lion 'Uncle' was one of the best lines in the entire HH series for me.
