Brother Pablo
So I am putting together a Crimson Fist army and obviously I will need a lot of Sternguard squads if I want to stay in character. In addition to the new Sternguard being prohibitively expensive, they are not the look that I want with the aprons on them. I have all of my current Tactical Squads as the old school version before the ones currently sold today, so getting the new version of the Tac's will make for a different look. My two ideas so far is to get some shoulder guards from the command squad and use the Veteran Badges, as well as get some combi-weapons from the Sternguard spruce as well. Does anyone else have any other good ideas? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/310016-kitbashing-tactical-squads-to-look-stern/ Share on other sites
Peredyne
You can get the Legion Combi-weapons pack from Forge World. 15 combi-weapons (5 each Combi-flamer, combi-melta and combi-plasma). I agree with you that the aprons don't look right for the Sternguard. I use them for Honor Guard. I want to get the two different Mk IV armor sets, the combi-weapon pack and the heavy bolters and flamers all from Forge World for my Stern Guard. Durus
Veterans of the Crimson Fists have both their fists painted red. So the paintscheme already differentiates them from tactical marines. I imagine using older armor mks would look good too. In honor of the RT cover I'd go with mk6 armor, which you can even build with the plastic kits. apologist
Modelling-wise, without spending any additional cash, you can load up your veterans with more equipment like pouches and grenades, or more honorifics, like using the scroll cases and purity seals that come with the Tactical squad. Marking them out with paint – red helms for Crimsons FIsts, for example – is also a good (and traditional!) way to mark out similar models as different. luke6116
I convrted my Sternguard a year or so ago. Like Apologist said extra bits can add a lot to their look. I added extra pouches, the strap bits from the kroot kit, scopes and drum or box magazines to do my convertions. A little green stuff also helps. I got some of my magazines from Anvil Industry. The others I got from extra storm bolters from the rhino kit. Stercus
I've used the drum mags from the sanguinary guard kit with reasonable success too.
